hi all.

i have had my i phone 6 for a few months now and finally feel ready to ditch mhy nokia for good. I have had been using 2 phones at once but cost wise i cant do this forever so the last bit i'm unsure of before switching to i phone full time would be my typing speed. It is still pretty slow and inaccurate .
Is the speed dots cover worth getting ? got a cover which has a screen protector so may not work over the top of that anyway.

Any other hints and tips to speed up my typing, i find most letters ok all be it not exactly each time i sometimes have to scrub around the area to find the letter i want i am in the right areas but often find a M when looking for a N and so on.

I came across predictive text above the keyboard but not sure how this works

Also auto correct i'm not sure if its working properly for me as when i'm typing it doesnt give me suggestions as i think it should i might be doing something wrong there.

I'm currently using touch typing mode but i wish to type a bit quicker. I understand most visually impaired i phone users are not able to type as fast as they could on a old T9 keypad like the old nokia's used but i am still so slow even after 2 months practise .

many thanks for any help or advice in advance.

Liel, is English not your first language?

Anyway, I'm watching this thread as well. I just got my first iPhone and am working on improving my typing speed too.

So far, I've learned to use a finger or two on each hand and to not panic or make jerky motions. Also, I believe the autocorrect suggestions pop up just above the on-screen keyboard, although I wish VoiceOver read them. Moving a finger up to check what is suggested seems counterintuitive for something that is supposed to ease the process no?

More tips on autocorrect/predictive text greatly appreciated!

The first thing I'd say is it's probably a wise move to focus on accuracy over speed. Something I've noticed in instructional sessions is that a lot of blind people seem to start out by lifting their appendage (hey, it's your phone, it's up to you what you type with) up off of the screen and aiming for their next letter, rather than dragging to them. They've still got to drag around a bit anyway when they inevitably miss the mark, so I try to encourage dragging from one place to the next instead of taking a shot in the dark. I'd also suggest finding an orientation and fingers/thumbs to type with that feel good, and sticking to those like glue for a while to build up the muscle memory, because that's when speed starts to come into play. I started out typing with a single thumb in portrait orientation, which seems a bit goofy and inefficient, but I was so used to being able to operate my previous phone one-handed whilst doing other stuff that sitting stock still and having both hands occupied was driving me nuts. Nowadays, I also turn off the keyboard click for a letter being accepted, because for some reason my brain was waiting to here that sound before starting to think about the next letter.

Not gonna lie, it's a slog whichever way you slice it, and is still by far my least favourite aspect of iOS even though I'm very accurate and fairly fast now. I put up with it because of all the other stuff that iOS enables me to do.

This is one of those where practice makes permanent, err… perfect.

I know some blind people that can type faster than some sighted people I know. It just takes lots of practice. On the iphone, I use my pointer finger to peck at each letter and in my head, I picture the keyboard layout.

As far as auto correct/auto suggest, I ignore them and focus on my typing.

Good luck and I hope you find a style that works for you.

I am totally blind and never did use a cell phone that used buttons for texting. My first experience with texting, E-Mail writing, etc., was on my iPhone, outside of a PC keyboard, that is. Anyway, what I found to work extremely well is to base my left thumb against the middle of the bottom of the phone, where the lightning cable connects. Then I use my pointer finger on the left hand to locate the letters. Quite frankly, however, I much more often use the dictate feature of the iPhone, instead.

Just remember that you must actually speak each punctuation symbol or it will look like one long run-on sentence to the sighted reader. For example, "I am writing a message period. You will note that in this example, you actually say the word period and then iOS adds it in as the punctuation symbol and not the word itself. This works well, except for the quotation mark. I have found that if you say quote, it will insert the quotation mark and not the word. It's sort of the reverse of the other symbols such as period or comma.

Anyway, I find that dictation feature is even better than touch typing with my thumb anchored at the base of the phone.

Hi Mark and all on this tread who need some tips to increase the typing speed, NOTE; I'm not saying that all written suggestions below are going worth to everyone just take those you think will be helping to increase your typing speed.
One of the first things yu have to do is know the iOS keyboard, {this means knowing where are located each of the characters]
and to give some idea how to do this is using standard typing together with basic voiceOver gestures
Flick left to move backward
flick right to move forward
double tap to select
it will be pretty slow but is worth It, the best way to know the iOS keyboard is this one.
If you are familiar with Windows laptop or Mac keyboard you have some idea with but the symbols are completely different., it will help to iOS beginners.
Also for those who use Touch typing the only difference will be dragging a single finger around the iOS keyboard and releasing it to pick your selection, before continuing I would like to note something here: to iOS8 all mention above apply only using default iOS keyboard as to iOS7 and previous version as well, remember to iOS8 can configure any third party keyboards.
The following options given below will definitely help increase the typing speed under:
Settings// general// Keyboard
just have to do double tap to enable or disable
Auto_Capitalization
This would work when start a new line instead of looking for the shift button or personal names or citties.
Auto_Correction
Activating this option would help correct many of the words when miss some Character, capitalization and more. There couple podcast on the forum talking about this I created one of those years ago when was running iOS 5 or 6 but the idea is the same.
Check Speling
This will help identify when a word is misspelled in the end when you write, hitting delete key will give a suggestions list if one of those optiones is the correct selecting it replace the intire word.
Look in the podcasts to listen some examples about it.
Predictive
This new for iOS8 and work on this way typing just some Characters will give some suggestions on the top of the keyboard
I want go back and talk about this important and easy option
Shortcuts
you can add unlimited shortcuts to the keyboard lets say is very similar to braille contraction but even better you have the option of add phrase not only words just typing some or single letter or character.
some examples are the following.
OMW on my way
TTYL talk to you later
af after
Etcetera you can add and use your imagination to add shortcuts.
Dictation
I will not go into much detail or contradictions about this option cause some people use allot others not to much but is not 100 percent accurate and all depend how and where you going to use it, dictation works perfect when is silence free of noise but when the cloud as bus stop or train doctor office school etcetera dictation and Siri become unusable and also depend the data signal on your device. I jumped some others options but are not to important here.
