I also have an iphone 5S running IOS 8.1 and have experienced this same problem. My guess, and this is only a guess as I'm no expert, is that the data connection just isn't fast or powerful enough for Siri to function reliably. It's very frustrating, but it doesn't seem to be a constant thing, at least not in my case; if there's a really strong cell signal or I have LTE coverage, it's never an issue, but if I'm getting 3G or edge speeds, Siri never works. It even seems to be hit and miss with 4G sometimes.

I have troubles getting Siri to work on my WiFi network at home too. Siri, does not set my alarm, but can do me a timer. Siri, does not know what the weather in my city is, or London for that matter. Siri, after listening to my command, will not respond with a sorry or anything like that, instead on your screen the somethings you can ask me is displayed....

I am assuming all this behaviour is post the upgrade to 8.2. iPhone 5S barely a month old.

There are lots of Apps available if you search for 'Speed Test' in the App Store. However, since they tend to be graphically oriented, they are useless for people using VoiceOver. Two that I've tested with VoiceOver, which work pretty well are Speed Test by Yuhi Dev, and Speed Test SpeedSmart by VeeApps. Both are FREE, but include ads which you can get rid of by an in app purchase. Both save results, so you can go back and compare previous results.

I like Speed Test by Yuhi Dev because it gives you a VoiceOver message of the progress of the test and after it mentions the number of Hops, you know it is done. This is the only app I tested that gives you any idea when the test is done. One problem is that when VoiceOver reads entries from the History, it does not identify which number is upload and which is download, and in fact reads them backwards from how they appear on the screen.

SpeedSmart gives no VoiceOver indication of when the test is done, it is tricky to find the results because they are on a separate page which you have to do a three finger in VoiceOver swipe to get to. Depending on what VoiceOver is doing the swipe left and right doesn't always work.

So my recommendation is Speed Test - http://www.spdtst.com

3G is more than enough for Siri to work properly.

This has happened to me numerous times. The problem is a conflict with VO and Siri. When VO is on, Siri will either stop responding or cut off. I work around this by turning off VO then telling Siri what I would like done. Then turn on VO. Someone once suggested turning voice off but that did not work for me.

HTH.

Hi Mister CANE. Have you tried using Siri with voice-over turned off? Siri never works for me with voice-over turned on
