Continuity on 2011 MacBook Air

Hi,

I've been hearing various things around the Web and want to poll the appleVis community on something in Yosemite:

I have a mid-2011 MacBook Air with, I thought, the requisite hardware to support Continuity features. However, I’ve read that the Macbook air model I have is just short of the cutoff list and am wondering why? I’m already going to have to purchase a new iPad to get continuity working there and am OK with that. A Mac that’s only three years old? Not so much. My Air has served me well and is still faithful; the only things that would make it better are a bigger drive and USB 3, but I can get around both of those issues.
Has anyone running Yosemite on a 2011 Air gotten Continuity to work? That's the big-ticket feature for me, so if not, I will probably hold off upgrading.

Hi Rolland,

Thanks for the link. I've heard different things about this Continuity activation tool, so might hold off for a little while. Anywhere from "it works fine" to "it will leave your Mac unbootable upon first restart." I rely on my Air too much two take chances with that kind of spectrum.

Hi.

This is typical of Apple. Let's restrict features to the newest and greatest devices so people buy them and we get lots and lots of money!

Seriously, I don't get it. While I can understand older mac models before 2011 not getting handoff due to the hardware, why are the 2011 devices not included even though they have bluetooth 4.0 LE?
What gives? Is this just Apple being Money greedy or is something truly wrong with the hardware? I assume it'sn ot the hardware, since that article stated that devices like the 2011 macbook Air would work by just modifying a system file with no hardware modifications needed.
Seriously, what gives? Why is Apple the master of planned obsolescence?
