Hi. I am getting my mac figured out pretty good. It is way easier for me then windows. I am learning it way faster then I thought I would. I can use Safari, download and update apps, change settings, connect my Braille display and much more. But one thing that has me completely stuck is the finder. Even after reading some articles on the finder and spending hrs and hrs playing with it, I just can not figure it out. I have looked on lots of blindness websites and can not find any podcasts on finder. Anyone know where I can find a podcast or something else that may help me? I love my mac, but I hate finder and I need to learn how to use finder so I can properly access files and folders. Thank you.

Hello. I created some podcasts. go here for more info.
Also, make sure you are in list view this way you have to open up a folder to copy past or cut and past. also, I forgot to change the comand key secquence for adding an item to the doc but it is cmd shift ctrl T.
I ggrasped the finder in about 2 hours but I was forced to by a very good good teacher. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
Be blessed and happy sunday.

More On The Problems I Am Having With Finder
Sometimes, command o does open stuff, sometimes VO space makes things open, but most of the time, neither keystroke works. I just stay in the list, which is not really a list of files and folders at all. Instead of my list of files or folders, I get in a list of info about when a certain file or folder was created, when it was modified, what ext it is and a bunch of other stuff I do not need. Moving between actual files and folders is impossible. I have tried all 4 arrow keys both with and without using the VO keys. Command up arrow and command down arrow don't open folders, they just don't take me anywhere when I press them. I still stay stuck in that list of file or folder info. I do use list view. Most of the time, when I do actually manage to find a file I want to open, command o and VO space do nothing.
navigating folders, (my) easy way
Hi there,
OSX has many different keystrokes for a variety of commands, sometimes so simmilar. Generally speaking, you can do exactly the same from two or more perspectives, and everyone has his favourite way...
My aproach is to use the simplest way, the one that is easier to remember and with a minimum hotkeys. Baiscally:
1. Make sure you are in list view mode (press command + 2 anywhere to activate it, you only have to activate it once).
2. Now, use command plus down arrow to open (a folder or a file), and command + up arrow to go back to the folder that contains the selected item.
3. To move between items, use the arrows, just like in Windows OS.
4. To copy a file or folder, press command +c, comand + v to paste (command + option + V to paste removing the original file, like cut command on windows).
5. To close a window, press command + w (command option W to close all).
6. And VO + shift + m to access the local menu for the selected item.
Hope this helps.
The list view is much like
The list view is much like the list view in Windows. Column view (Command+3) is like a tree view. You might try it and see if it helps. You will down arrow and then use the right arrow key to enter into the next folder. Use the left arrow key to move back. When you stop interacting with a list view or column view, left arrow across the vertical splitter and stop on the sidebar. Interact with it and up and down arrow to downloads, documents, etc. When you find the one you want, stop interacting and move back right across the vertical splitter and stop on the list view or column view. Interact with it and again use your arrow keys.
One additional thing that
One additional thing that might cause confusion. Make sure quick nav is turned on by pressing the left and right arrow keys together. It is easy to turn off when entering edit mode and you won't know you've done it.
Hi,
Hi,
I've found on my mac that I don't always have to interact with the list view or the side bar. I just use the browser table thing without interacting with it. Use your arrows to move through items and hit command O to open them.
I'm glad to find this topic!
I too have really struggled with Finder.
I'm having trouble creating a folder within another folder. In my iCloud drive, I want to add a 2016 folder to the other folders at level 3 to my audio clips folder which is at level 2. Every time I try to create one, it puts it at level II outside the Audio Clips folder. I've tried to then copy and paste, as well as drag and drop, it into the folder at level 3 but it just creates another copy at level 2. Any suggestions?
