Accessibility Comments

AppleVis Team Note: This has been updated to reflect based on Community Accessibility Ratings. Original Poster Note:

Buttons are not labeled, it is hard to find products, and you cannot see the price until you add the product to the cart. Voiceover jumps around, basically this app could be awesome but for now, it is not accessible to the blind. Also, the website is terrible to navigate.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads all page elements.

Button Labeling

All buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

The app is fully accessible with VoiceOver and is easy to navigate and use.

I just contacted them. We'll see. This app will be useful to me should I move and relocate to get my masters degree in a few months.

Good luck and good job on the initial review.

Ok. I just heard from the dev. he sais the following. Hi Sarah, Thanks so much for following up! Our engineers are definitely working on accessibility through the app, but unfortunately there is no ETA at this time. We will be passing this information along to our engineers. In the meantime, you should be able to use the mobile web version on your phone by logging into instacart.com on your phone's web browser. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, and we'll be sure to let you know when we have any update to the app! Best, Josh We'll I guess see what happens.

Funny enough the site works well on the computer. I can't test it as it is not in my area as of yet but I did sign up and I hope I can change location for when I relocate, or what not.

Take care and yeah the prices seem pretty good.

I joined the party, via Twitter. I would definitely use this app - I love what Costco has, but hate the Costco experience. Thanks for getting us started!

this is the URL that Instacart CS says blind users should use for now.
https://www.instacart.com/store?mobile=t
I have had luck with this on my computer with both IE and FireFox and Jaws 15.
I still would like to see them make the iOS app accessible, but for now this may help if your having trouble placing an order.

The app instacart, I sent an email requesting some accessibility changes. I believe they can do this. Hopefully I will get a response. I can see how helpful the app would be for myself and others.

By KE7ZUM on Sunday, May 25, 2014 - 05:39

Hello to all. I put together a usability memo in audio format regarding the app. I just emailed it to the instacart folks. I encourage you all who want this app to be accessible to do the same. I'm already getting and seeing positive responses on their twitter account so let's keep the constrictive Criticism going here.

By Mello on Sunday, May 25, 2014 - 05:39

They have asked a few of us to compile accessibility related feedback. So please add any thoughts/requests you may have to this Applevis post, and I will add that feedback to the document we are collaborating on.
Thanks for everyone’s support.
Do keep emailing them and telling them that accessibility for blind users is important to you.

I downloaded this app for the first time yesterday and it appears very useable. In my mind, the accessibility should be upgraded. The app seems accessible, but the interface could be easier to navigate and use. I have not tried using the web site yet, but plan to do that next.

I have been using the InstaCart app for nearly a year. The app has undergone several updates. The current version is 4.1. Most buttons are clearly labeled. I am able to browse items, change departments, change from one store to another, and complete my purchase. By contrast, on a PC running Internet Explorer version 11, Windows 7, and either JAWS, System Access or NVDA, I can do everything *except* complete my purchase. I have made the company aware of this. But let me get back to the iPhone experience. Another way the iPhone version is superior is that it allows me to see ingredient lists and cooking instructions for some items.
I now find only one unlabeled button. I am able to specify whether I will accept a replacement for out-of-stock merchandise, and I have the app set to ask my shopper to call me to inform me of replacements. The version I am using is 4.1, running under IOS 8.3.

OH wow nice to see they have made some updates. I hope they can get instacart in my city soon so I can have a play with it. It sounds awsome.

Hello everyone, I have noticed a couple of things with the app. When your trying to rate the experience you had with the delivery, the buttons are not labeled. When you are trying to select delivery times, the time picker just keeps selecting things as you swipe so I don't know exactly how to make it work correctly with out exploring the screen until I find a time. I have tried to contact CS but I am getting the how to use the app and not any really success with bug reports.

By Tasha on Friday, November 25, 2016 - 05:39

HI all, with the latest version of Instacart and Ios 10, I cant figure out how to select a delivery time. It says all the times are selected, but just picks the last available one, no matter how many times I double tap on other times. Is there a work-around for this?

I find that if I double tap and hold on the slider that I can change it. It takes a little fitteling around with it but I can get it done.

HI Kathy.
I noticed you have not modified the app entry since you originally submitted it 4 years ago. can you please edit the original entry to reflect the more current accessibility rating? Thanks!

This App is fully accessable with VoiceOver now. All buttons are clearly labeled, and the App is easy to navigate, and use. I am using the latest version of the App, and the latest version of IOS. The website instacart.com is also fully accessable with Mac OS using safri web browser with VoiceOver. Using instacart I can now shop at four different grocery stores, one pet store, and one drug store in my small Midwest city. I recommend this to any blind persons using VoiceOver.

Thanks for this helpful post. One issue I have experienced in the past with this service is when your shopper needs to change or edit or delete items from your original order. That part where you need to approve a recommended change or take some action when they are saying they need to change order seems particularly difficult. Is there a particular way you deal with that and is that part of the interaction accessible?

The shopper sends me a text message with an approve link embedded. I must find the approve link in the text message. This is not easy but can be done. This rarely happens anymore. If an item is out of stock a message is displayed on the add to cart screen. Sometimes when I click the place order button a screen pops up saying that the inventory of some item at this store is low. A substitute is displayed. I click the approve button, and the order is placed. I can make changes to my order after placing it, up until the time the shopper starts shopping. I receive a text message at this time.

By Tasha on Saturday, August 25, 2018 - 05:39

This sounds like a much less frustrating system! Do you know if it works for prepared foods? I hate ordering those and having to deal with finding substitutes after the shopper has started shopping.
