iOS 7.1 and Battery Life

Ever since I updated my iPhone to 7.1 yesterday, I seem to have a large amount of battery drain. I'm losing about 3 percent of battery an hour, and that's if the phone is just sitting there, locked. I've checked all of my settings, and everything is exactly the same as it was before I updated. Is anyone else having batter issues since updating? I just charged my phone 2 hours ago, and it's already down to 93 percent, with barely any usage. Which is another issue, I've used the phone for maybe 10 minutes since I last charged it, but in settings, under usage, it says I've been using it for over an hour. I checked in the app switcher, and none of my apps are open. Anyone have any ideas?

Hello Lisa, I've had this problem as well but not with Iowa 7.1 and terms to find out that it was hardware related, so what I recommend you doing is doing a reset on your iPhone, and backing everything up to iTunes and take anything off your phone that might run in the background even whenever it is closed. Then test your battery life and see if you're still having the same problem, then the thing to do next, would be to call Apple and let them know that you've done their troubleshooting steps in your having battery life problems. If I can be any more further assistance to you, please feel free to write to me using my private forum.

Have you tried turning on the screen curtain to do this do a three finger triple tap to turn on screen curtain.

By Khalfan Bin Dhaher on Monday, March 24, 2014 - 08:40

Hey all. I am facing the same issues that Lisa has mentioned above. Unfortunately I've tried all tips and tricks to fix this, but nothing worked well for me.

Just want to chime in! A 5S 64 GB with VO enabled and all visible apps closed has drained 30% within the last 6 hours.

By sockhopsinger on Monday, March 24, 2014 - 08:40

Also, instead of just turning on your screen curtain, make sure you also dim your screen brightness down to zero per cent. You can do this from the control center (flicking up with three fingers while the status bar is in focus). That might help with battery life, but no guaranties.

Hi all, Well, I'm glad it's not just me with the battery life issue in iOS 7.1! Unfortunately, I can confirm similar battery problems on my iPhone 5S 64Gb running iOS 7.1. I tried restoring my phone as a new device, but faced with the task of reconfiguring all of my apps and uncertainty about whether the restore as new device would really fix anything, I just restored it again from an iTunes backup. While I have brightness at zero and Bluetooth, location services, and background app refresh turned off, I really don't feel that one should have to do that just to get a reasonable amount of battery out of a phone when background app refresh and location services are a core part of the user experience.
Michael, that is very true. Also, one should not have to disable Location Services when you are not actively using an app that requires Location services. Frankly, the background app update doesn't bother me because I like to manually update aps in case one has a major accessibility change after an update. However, I understand that there are people who really like the background app update, but I am not one of them. Your point is a valid one, though. The fact that we have to turn off such pivotal services just to get extra battery life is very uncool.

This is yet another reason why I'm sticking with 7.0.6. Roll back if you can. In my oppinion, iOS 7.1 should have never made it out of beta testing until serious bugs like this were detected and fixed

Hi. The background app refresh and auto app update that you were calling background app update are 2 different things. Background app refresh lets apps use location and do other stuff even when they are not running. Auto app update will update apps without you having to go into the app store and click the update button.

Sorry Sockhopsinger, I meant Background App Refresh--the feature where apps can download data in the background to always be updated and ready to go.

Hi all, itis most unfortunate that some people face battery problem after updating to 7.1. For me, i did not really have this problem, but yes,i did have the location tracking problem. What I did was to disable some app in the auto refresh and that took care of it. One example of those app is Uber check in. I don't have this problem back with 7.0x. As long as I have it turned off in app switcher when not in used, it will not turn on the location tracking. But with 7.1, you have to be more careful and more particular to manage your apps. Thanks.

I just sent feedback to the apple accessibility team regarding this issue so we'll see why happens. I encourage all of you who are experiencing this to do the same. I sent them a link to this thread as well. Who knows., it might help.

By Lisa on Monday, March 24, 2014 - 08:40

I seemed to have fixed the problem. I did a restore, and that didn't really seem to help. Then I restarted my phone, making sure all apps were closed, and things seem to be a lot better. I've since opened the usual apps that I generally run, and it seems to still be ok. Here's hoping it stays that way.

Hi Lisa. So you restored from iTunes or iCloud and then it all seemed to work fine again? I too have faced some of these battery issues on my iPhone 4S. I've tried every step in this thread, but nothing worked out too well...

Hello listers, Unfortunitly, I have found that it is best to do a full restore with your device when updating ones phone with a major update release. This means not restoring from a back-up. I have found that sometimes, not always, restoring from a back-up leaves whatever settings present that are causing battery drain, or any other unpleasant issues, to reappear when your phone is restored from that back-up. If you restore fresh, without using a back-up, and start from scratch it usually fixes any issues. I know that this is a whopper of an inconvenience, but I have always found better success doing this then restoring from a back-up. When you stop to think about starting from scratch, rather than a back-up, it makes logical sense. So, give it a try, what do you have to lose. It's an option, and until you try it and cross it off of your list of possible solutions, you will not know. It has worked several times for me in the past. I remain on IOS 7.0.4 without battery life issues because I am jailbroken, but rest assured, when I do update, when a new JB comes out, it will be a fresh restore from scratch and not a back-up. -Andrew-

By alex wallis on Monday, March 24, 2014 - 08:40

Unfortunately its annoying that apple doesn't allow you to be flexible when restoring from backups, so for example only restoring contacts and messages but not restoring settings. I always install updates to my phone by installing a full download through iTunes and I never do an over the air update. I always restore from backups and myself have actually found it useful as when I was jailbroken I used a tweak to enable numbers instead of bars for my wifi signal and I have found that I can make this setting continue when I restore from a backup even when my phone isn't jailbroken.

Hi Andrew, I too have heard and read that the best way to fix bad battery life in iOS is to do a complete restore. And if my battery life gets worse or I get tired of just dealing with current performance (or lack thereof), I probably will. Interestingly, some discussions I read on the Apple Support Forums indicate that restoring as new did not fix the iOS 7.1-specific issues, further making me want to hold back on restoring as new. My whole issue is that it shouldn't be that way. Part of the appeal of Apple products is the simplicity. Apple even advertises how seamlessly everything works. But what good is the backing up of your device, and iCloud, and all of the restoration ability if you can't use it when you need to restore the device? I shouldn't *have* to restore my device as new, and reconfigure everything, just to fix my battery life problems because the update to iOS 7.1 introduced issues for not just me, but other people as well. I shouldn't have to disable this-and-that feature just to get a day's reasonable use out of the phone without constantly worrying about the amount of battery I have remaining. Surely that's not the way Apple intended the process to work?

While the battery life problem in iOS 7.1 is certainly frustrating (I can say so from firsthand experience), I don't think it is an accessibility-related issue. So, battery life bug reports would probably be best directed to AppleCare.

Last night I was charge my iPod touch fifth-generation completely 100% today I wake up in the morning I check my battery life is 60% I am running iOS 7.1 's anyone have this problems?

Billy, Unfortunately, this problem has been widely reported in iOS 7.1, both on AppleVis and on other internet forums and websites. While some have reported success from doing a factory restore and setting your device up as new (not restoring from a backup) when trying to fix general battery life bugs in iOS, I've seen reports where people have tried that and had absolutely no success whatsoever with fixing the specific issues in iOS 7.1.

By Andrew on Monday, March 24, 2014 - 08:40

Hello once again listers, While I did NOT say that a full factory fresh restore, not from a back-up, would guarantee success in fixing your battery life issues, I did say it was among your options. As Michael pointed out, it has worked for people. If you are still experiencing battery life issues and you have tried everything else, I feel you have no right to complain about the issue of battery life if you do not at least give this option a shot. Is it a pain? Sure, I completely admit it is, but are the answers always easy? You cannot say that nothing works if you have not attempted this potential fix. I go through this every October-January when a new jailbreak is released for a new version of IOS. For me, this seems to eliminate a lot of the issues that restoring from a back-up can leave, especially if you had issues to begin with. Again, it is just my two cents. -Andrew-

1st. Turn off WiFi. 2nd. Turn on everything on cellular settings, (3G, Cellular Data, Data Roaming). 3rd. Wait until iPhone gets 3G signal, once it gets a 3G signal, wait for 5mins. 4th. Turn off 3G. (DO NOT connect to any Wi-Fi networks before this is done), DO NOT turn off cellular data and data roaming. 5th. Turn on Wi-Fi. Connect to home Wi-Fi if available. Finally, make sure to restart the phone! :) Good day!

Hi. I've not noticed any real problems with battery life, but I do have a few suggestions. 1. If you're going to have your phone on for a while but won't be using it, go into your app switcher and close all open apps that you aren't using. Some apps are just general battery hogs, so if you close them it'll help, or at least it has always for me. 2. Make sure your screen curtain is on, and make sure your screen brightness is set to 0 percent. Also make sure auto-brightness is turned off. 3. Here's a setting that's buried pretty deep but this one may help too. Go to settings, general, privacy. Make sure limit add tracking is turned on. Again, these are just my settings and i'm able to usually get about 9 to 9 and a half, possibly even 10 hours of use with my iPhone 5.

Hello. I got the following reply from apple accessibility. I'm way to lazy to do any mark up so am pasting the text plain. Links will not be clickable.

Hello,

Thank you for your email. We need to ask that you contact AppleCare regarding this issue. There are logs they may want to gather that can provide additional information about the battery usage on the device and help you find the app or apps that are causing the battery drain. You can contact AppleCare via the web, telephone use the Contact Apple Support link to begin an online support session.

Hope someone can contact t apple care about this as I don't have 7.1 installed yet.

Take care.

After two days of testing, I can report that resetting all of my settings in Settings> General> Reset> Reset All Settings seems to have helped the problem. My battery drain on standby has been reduced, and near the end of my day I'm currently at 58% battery. And this was with letting BARD Mobile play a book with the screen locked for a while, too. I don't think this solution is universal, however, as I have friends who have tried this and who still experience the dramatic standby battery drain.

yeah I would contact apple care. I wish there were a better way to contact them besides phone as them looking at logs and stuff is a lot easier via email then phone. lol!

Take care and good luck.

I'm using an iPhone 5 and experienced drastic reduction in battery life after installing ios7.1. I tried every common suggestion short of a complete rebuild with no luck. Then I found Shannon's suggestion (#25) which involves cancelling and re-establishing wi-fi and cellular settings. Perfect! My battery life is better now than when the phone was brand new. Thank you!

By KE7ZUM on Monday, March 24, 2014 - 08:40

Well, that's an odd fix, but if it worked ... I'd still contact apple care about all of this though as that's what the accessibility team wants us to do as this is not an accessibility related matter.

Good luck.

After updating to iOS 7.1 I've been facing a huge battery draining issue. I disabled Location Services, Background App Refresh, Siri, WiFi, Bluetooth, Auto Brightness and restored my iPhone 5S to factory defaults. The same problem occurs even after restoring the device. Unfortunately I was unable to know what causes this problem. I unplugged my device after it has been fully charged this morning at 11:45 am. I checked the battery status at 12:30 pm and the battery status was 79%, at 02:00 pm it was 50% and the battery was completely low at 3:00 pm. There were no running apps. I've been playing with a Google phone these days and found a very cool feature, a user is able to know the battery usage in details. The given information is very accurate. I'm wondering if there is a way to test the battery usage on iOS devices and Apple own apps.

By kithri on Monday, March 24, 2014 - 08:40

Okay, try these: 1. make sure to have your screen curtain on. This means a 3-finger triple tap and the screen should be mostly dark or if a sighted person looks at it there will be nothing showing up on the screen. If the screen is bright and sighted people can read stuff on it then you need to do the triple tap. 2. If you don't access your email on an Ipod or Iphone, then go to settings and to mail/contacts and tap it. There will be a thing that says *fetch new data* and if you have it set to off then your device won't continually be checking and uploading to the server. Also under that same area if you have your mail account linked to your device like for gmail or Hotmail or msn then click the name of that like mine says gmail. In there will be a list of mail, contacts, reminders and so on and if you set mail to off again it won't continually be searching and linked to the server. Yes, you can still get your mail by going to mail on the home screen and tapping it and it will at that time bring in all new mail but doing it manually like this will save battery life. 3. If you don't use face-time, set that to off mode by going to settings and face time. 4. I recommend doing this for anything you don't use on a regular basis like messages, reminders or whatever you don't use. 5. You can also turn off the location services by going to settings and privacy as that constantly links you to whatever service is around you, but if you are traveling or live on campus for school, leave it on as in case your device gets lost or stolen. 6. For music, try using your premade playlists from ITunes or where ever as skipping/fast forwarding takes up battery too. 7. If you have apps set for push notifications/alerts, go to settings and notification center and choose the apps you don't want to notify you and set them to off. 8. Also under settings, general there is a background app refresh item that if you tap it and set that to off, it means that all apps that are open or that will be opened will continue to run and refresh themselves in the background even while you are doing something else with your device so off mode is recommended. 9. Remember to close any unwanted running apps by hitting the home button twice quickly to bring up app switcher and swipe left/right through the list and up to close the app. All settings can be found under settings or settings general and turning off as many as possible that you don't use will improve the battery life drastically as the defalt on almost all mobile devices is the on mode. Also note that don't run your battery down to zero but charge it when it gets around 20 percent or so. Never store your device in a really cold or hot place like a hot car or glovebox in a hot car or cold car as this will drain the battery even if the device is off. Heat will make the battery expand and start to loose a charge over time. All mobile devices will only have a certain number of drains/charges in the battery and eventually, possibly couple years, it may have to be replaced. If your device gets hot when charging and it is in a case of some kind, remove it from the case when charging as some cases conduct heat for some reason. If you leave your device on screen lock and not turned off it isn't supposed to drain much battery at all as it isn't doing anything and if you have it pared with a braille device like braille sense or some other device, the mobile device controls the braille device so it may drain the battery a bit more because of the paring, but not a huge deal I did all my settings 2 days ago and even leaving location service on, the battery isn't draining even half as much as it when I upgraded to 7.1 and the speed of opening things and using internet seems faster too. I got most of this from Apple Care as I paid for the 2 year contract for support or replacement in case anything went wrong so I hope this helps some people.

I have a iPhone 4s and I have the same issues like Lisa and others I did every trouble shooting and continue looking for a server or don't know what and my battery last 2 hours
