Turning off auto-punctuation in iOS 27 dictation

Hi, so I just updated to iOS 27.2 and I noticed that whenever I use dictation it starts automatically inserting punctuations, even though I am quite sure I had auto-punctuation turned off back in iOS 26.x and possibly even earlier.
Is there a way to disable auto-punctuation in iOS 27.2? I went into the keyboard settings but there is no toggle for it at all. I am on iPhone 15 Pro Max BTW.

I’ve noticed that it does it, especially when you are trying to dictate something and then there’s a word you actually have to spell. When you stop dictating, it puts a period right after the last word you said or a? Or any other punctuation that it seems to think that you need. I’m on an iPhone 12 and it still does that with me. I had it turned off in iOS 26 as well.

I also noticed that the automatic punctuation feature suddenly activated when I switched to IOS27. I went to the settings and turned it off, even though I vividly remember turning this thing off a couple years ago.
Doing this probably helped a little, but it still inserts some question marks and other punctuation marks here and there....
I'm not happy about it either....

I will be following this thread.I've made sure in every way I know how to make sure that auto correct, auto punctuation and all that stuff is turned off, but when I am dictating, I get a lot of unwanted punctuation. If I were more suspiciously minded, I'd say that Apple is nerfing regular dictation so that people might get fed up enough to buy newer phones. I love my iPhone 16, though, and even with iOS 27 being as annoying as it has become, I have no desire to acquire a newer phone yet.

So it seems that this is not related to Apple Intelligence, since I recall only iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max and newer supports it.
At first I thought that the upgraded Apple Intelligence is to blame, but since you're experiencing this problem on your iPhone 12 that means that Apple Intelligence is not the cause behind all of this...

I think your suspicions are valid messy up. I’m using an iPhone SE 2022 and an iPhone 15 not in the order of primary by the way 15 is primary SEC secondary. They’re both having some major dictation issues. It’s literally just stopping automatically and inserting stuff wherever it feels like it. I am not buying a new phone, no matter what Apple tries to do it to me, Missy, Hopp, and everybody else. This is beyond ridiculous at this point. I’m literally going to have to reset all settings after I back up my phone completely and see if that resolves anything because all the other troubleshooting stuff I’ve done I’ve done nothing and by the way, this is not related. This is completely dictation. does it not anything to do with voiceover so guess what that means Apple is more like me to do something about it

No, thank you. Very good question. I’m sure some people are but I’m not. This will get resolved. It’s just that there’s been a lot more issues for me this year. I already know how the system works for iOS so no, I don’t really wanna switch. But thanks for the invitation. I don’t like to have to guess which device I can get and I just know that when I pick up an iPhone, I can most part use the interface so thank you. That’s my reasons. :-)

Ah yes... I posted about this very topic a few weeks ago when I was running an IOS 27 beta. I also reported this to Apple. Here's what my research and experimentation have figured out.

I'm guessing everyone here experiencing this doesn't have an iPhone 17 Pro or newer that supports the on-device dictation model. When I was having this problem, I was using both a personal iPhone 16 Pro Max, and a work iPhone 14 Pro Max. While the 16 Pro Max did support the new Siri, neither supported the on-board dictation models.

I have since upgraded my personal phone to the iPhone 18 Pro Max, which does use the on-board dictation, and it's worlds better. I might get the occasional stray punctuation mark, but I don't even think I have had that in running the betas and now full version of IOS 27.2. It works great!

However, I still have both older phones, and the dictation is still a pretty miserable experience because of this problem. It also looks like they got rid of the auto-punctuation setting under Keyboard settings in IOS 27. I had a co-worker who was still running IOS 26, and they still had that setting available.

So my current verdict is that if you have an older phone, and run IOS 27, you might be screwed for now. I looked all over for some setting that might fix this, but came up with nothing. My older work phone is especially a mess, but I'm hoping to get a new phone through work soon. Sadly, it seems like you need a pretty new phone that supports the on-board dictation models for things to improve.

I would report this problem through Feedback if you are running any beta. And if not, it may be worth letting Apple Accessibility know too.

I’ve already reported dictation issues to Apple Accessibility. The thing is that dictation is not technically an accessibility feature. But dictation is still acting up without the use of voiceover. There’s definitely something further ongoing in dictation. I refuse to buy a newer phone to fix this. First of all, I don’t need one and I also don’t have money too. I wouldn’t be a darn bit surprised if this is what Apple is doing. Trying to mess with the older phone so people will buy new ones. I refuse to play that game. I’m going to continue to work with Apple to hopefully resolve this. My next step is to reset all of my phone settings on Saturday. That’s when I will be on my flight and I can redo everything. I’m going to help help out with this so that other people don’t have to go through my frustrations hopefully. But it is incredibly frustrating. Just gonna say that. The thing that mine is doing is like Voice is deciding for itself. Dictation is over and inserting things without having to deactivate it and it really ridiculous because then when I try to fix it, Church things everywhere else. And by the way, it just happened without voiceover Apple did a screen share and saw it. Dictation is not picking up everything going on. They definitely broke dictation with the software version. Did not happen to me at all until 27.2. And it’s a Grandpa of my devices. I can’t deal with that much longer, but like I said, I will help so that other people don’t have to deal with it hopefully. It’s good at least that it’s not just isolated to voiceover. So that means it’s probably affecting people as well. Play fighting affecting the general population as well. And I guarantee you they’re gonna have to do something about it. I mean, I’m still relying on dictation that it needs to work so you know that’s how that goes. Not thrilled but here we are hopefully we can get this fixed sooner than later. By the way, when Voice tries to insert things on itself, it’s literally talking in full freaking volume like it would if it was trying to use series system volume or something.
