Hi AppleVis community,
I’m stopping by today to share a project I’ve been pouring my heart into: an open-source audio game platform called PlayAural. We currently have 44 games up and running, and I'd love for you to check it out.
Just a fun quick fact before we dive in: the name "Aural" comes from the Latin word auris, meaning related to the ear or hearing, which really drives the whole philosophy of the platform.
A bit of history (and setting the record straight)
PlayAural was originally built on top of the open-source framework of PlayPalace. However, I want to clarify that PlayAural is an entirely independent modification that I developed. In fact, PlayAural had already been publicly open and actively running for quite a while before the original PlayPalace project eventually closed down.
The amazing part of this journey is that RoryMichie, the original maintainer of PlayPalace, has since joined me as a co-developer on PlayAural! We're now working together to keep pushing this shared vision forward. (You can verify this in the official PlayPalace Discord or their GitHub archive).
And to be clear up front: PlayAural is completely open-source. It is, and always will be, 100% free and ad-free for as long as people are playing it.
Where you can play (and where I need your help!)
Right now, PlayAural has dedicated clients for Windows (a Python client with full keyboard support) and Android (a React Native app featuring self-voicing).
For iOS and Mac users, we use a dedicated web client (PWA). While we don't have a native, installable app in the iOS App Store just yet, my testing shows that the web version is quite stable on iOS Safari or chrome. This is exactly why I’m reaching out to this amazing community: I would be incredibly grateful if you could try playing via your Apple devices and help me test the VoiceOver experience.
What makes PlayAural different?
I know we already have fantastic, veteran platforms in our community like RS Games and QuentinC's Gameroom. So why build another one?
My design philosophy focuses heavily on creating a richer, more immersive soundscape. I want the platform to feel alive—incorporating environmental ambient sounds, contextual background music, and highly detailed sound effects, rather than just standard turn-based beeps. I'll be the first to admit I haven't perfected this yet, but I'm working hard to improve it every single day. Also, unlike playing some older clients on iOS, the PlayAural web interface fully supports native browser audio playback.
The Games & Features
We have 44 games right now, ranging from classic board and dice games to things that bring a totally fresh vibe to audio gaming.
- We have original titles like Dead Man's Poker (Texas Hold'em, but you bet with bullets in a revolver) and Dead Man's Deck (a tense game of deception where you have to catch players lying about their cards).
- We also recently added games like Bang! The Bullet (a Wild West shootout with hidden roles) and Exploding Kittens.
Beyond the games themselves, PlayAural features built-in, real-time voice chat at every game table. It works just like a group phone call, so you can easily hang out with friends or meet new people while you play.
Languages
We officially support English and Vietnamese. Thanks to our amazing community contributors on GitHub, we also have Persian, and Spanish is coming very soon.
I am constantly trying to optimize PlayAural and bring it to more platforms. If you're up for trying something new, I would be absolutely thrilled to have you at our tables. It would be even better if you could report any bugs you run into so I can get them fixed!

Thank you so much for reading, and have a great time playing!

Mac
VoiceOver on Mac in Safari reads menu items very strangely. It speaks part of the name, gets cut off, and then speaks the full name again. For example, it says pla then play. I'll try to record a demo if it helps in a little while. Other than that and the constant ding VoiceOver plays for live region announcements, it seems to work, though I'll have to do more extensive testing.
This topic should probably be changed to other Apple chat since we're discussing more than just iOS. Thanks for this amazing platform!
Re: Mac by Chris
Hi Chris,
First off, thank you so much for testing the platform and for the kind words!
I just updated the topic category to "Other Apple chat" as you suggested. Sorry about that—this is my very first time posting a topic on the AppleVis forum, so I'm still learning the ropes and getting used to things! :)
Regarding the VoiceOver issue on Mac Safari (the "pla... play" stutter), I will definitely investigate what's causing it. It's quite strange because I didn't encounter that issue during my local testing. Just to be completely transparent: I don't personally own a Mac, so I will need to borrow one from a friend to properly debug this. Because of that, it might take a little bit of time to get a fix out, but I am absolutely looking into it.
If you are able to record that demo, it would be incredibly helpful for me to understand exactly what's happening! I'll also look into optimizing the ARIA live regions so VoiceOver doesn't constantly play that "ding" sound.
Thanks again for the extensive testing and support!
aria issue
I just tried in chrome here, and I didn't hit the pla play issue, but in a wya I hit something far nastier.
VO literally interrupts itself to say all other info that arrive when it shouldn't. Case in point, I care more about what card a bot drew from its deck than whoever just created a table of this or that, at least at that particular moment.
But also other game events can cause this problem, for example, when playing battleship, I was only able to infer if the hit missed or landed based on the sound. The speech kept interrupting itself to mention who's turn it was, and so it never finished announcing which ship was sank either.
another bug
Also when playing any game, I have to actually go and press escape before I can see all the option a menu has to offer. I don't know why that is. When I create a table I only see a few options at first like, start game, advanced options on, faster game, leave table, who's at the table... But to see things like add bot, I have to press the escape key first. Same for all aspects of the game once it's in progress.
not a bug
That's not a bug; play place uses the exact same interface, its not a bug.
Re: Casey Reeves - aria issue and another bug
Hi Casey,
Regarding the aria-live issue, it seems to be working fine on my end. Could you please provide a bit more context or specific steps to reproduce this bug? Also, as an alternative, the PlayAural web version supports the Web Speech API, which allows you to use the browser's built-in text-to-speech engine instead of relying entirely on the screen reader's aria-live queue.
As for your second point (and as Igna mentioned), that is actually not a bug. The interface is designed this way by choice. Many actions are meant to be triggered via keyboard shortcuts. If we displayed every single button on one screen at the same time, it would make the interface incredibly cluttered and difficult for mobile users to navigate.
Since you are playing on a Mac, I highly recommend checking out the documentation carefully to familiarize yourself with the available keyboard shortcuts.
You did say IOS?
I'm using it on IOS browser safari.
I can play it there can't I?
The biggest problem is clicking open options.
I'm new to it and there's no like instructions or guide.
I assumed that open options shows you the games?
When I click it I get
Opening options...
Which stays like that for ages and doesn't update or indeed,
show any options.
Is this a bug?
or a network issue.
thanks
I'll try again.
RE: You did say IOS? By Amrit the blind constent learner
Hi Amrit,
The interface of the web version is divided into heading categories: Menu, History, Chat and Voice, and Shortcuts.
The "Open Options" button that you see is located in the Shortcuts section. When you press to open the options, the options will be opened under the Menu section.
Most of the time, if you do not swipe away from the Menu list, the screen reader cursor will remain there. Alternatively, you can navigate using heading navigation.
