Talk Forward is a free, high-performance Android screen reader designed from the ground up for speed and responsiveness. Built by the same developer behind AGram, it features an iOS-inspired gesture model that prioritizes simplicity and immediate feedback, making it an excellent choice for users looking for a more "native" experience on Android.

Core Features

  • Simplified Gesture Model: Say goodbye to complex L-shaped angle gestures. Talk Forward uses a single-finger swipe model (left/right for navigation, up/down for the rotor), making interactions faster and less prone to errors.
  • VoiceOver-Style Rotor: A two-finger rotation gesture allows you to quickly cycle through navigation granularity, speech rates, or custom voice profiles.
  • Voice Rotor: Define and store multiple complete voice profiles (engine, rate, pitch, volume) and switch between them instantlyโ€”perfect for toggling between a fast voice for skimming and a clearer voice for reading.
  • On-Screen Braille Keyboard: Supports 6 or 8-dot input directly on the screen, with both dedicated input modes for typing and command modes for system control.
  • Hold-to-Dictate: A seamless way to dictate textโ€”simply press and hold a finger on any text field to start. Talk Forward stays silent while recording to prevent misinterpretation, and you simply lift your finger to commit.
  • Customizable Two-Finger Gestures: All four two-finger swipe gestures are fully reassignable, allowing you to map them to Home, Back, Notifications, Quick Settings, or whatever best fits your workflow.
  • Edge Gestures: Slide in from the bottom for Home/Recents or from the top for Notifications/Quick Settings, complete with vibration and spoken cues for confirmation.
  • Optimized Latency: Heavily optimized for speed, ensuring that gestures and speech respond in milliseconds for a smooth, fluid experience.

Getting Started & Support

Talk Forward is free to use and provides in-app updates directly from the settings menu.

  • Support the Project: While the app is free, users can become "Supporters" to help fuel development. Supporters receive a "Talk Forward Gold" badge within the app.
  • Community: The developer is highly active. For those looking to keep up with development or share feedback, keep an eye on this thread and the Blind Android Users Telegram group.

Quick Tips (Community Insights)

  • Opening App Lists (Samsung): If the standard two-finger swipe up doesn't trigger the app list, you can remap this in Talk Forward Menu > Edit Gestures. Assign "Synthetic Swipe Up" to the gesture.
  • Switching Screen Readers:
    • Samsung: Use the accessibility shortcut (often Volume Up + Power or a long hold on volume keys) to toggle between screen readers.
    • Pixel: Use the accessibility shortcut or a triple-finger tap on the screen.
  • Braille/Emojis: There is no direct emoji insertion in the current Braille keyboard. To insert an emoji, hide the keyboard (two-finger swipe down) or switch back to your primary keyboard (three-finger swipe down).

I installed Talk Forward today on a Pixel 10 Pro. And turned it on. I found that after enabling Braille Display, it cannot find my display it says searching and no displays found. My Brailliant BI-20X operates fine and normally with TalkBack.
I don't know how to troubleshoot this or if it is even possible. TalkBack works with it fine, after I exit Talk Forward and re-open TalkBack as well.
I get the sense Braille is not a top priority and I can understand that. But this is a show stopper for me personally.
Has anyone used a Braille display with Talk Forward successfuly? If so, which one?

Please send your feedback to Yannick by either visiting
https://app-suite.eu/contact
, or by submitting it via the 'Support & Feedback' area among Talk Forward's menu at the bottom.

The only braille display I have myself, is the NLS E-Reader by Humanware (which mysteriously updated its guide on the web at some point with instructions for Android users [section 12.4] without telling anyone):
https://www.loc.gov/nls/services-and-resources/equipment-for-nls-materials/nls-braille-ereader-humanware-user-guide/
. I'll try and give it a run with Talk Forward and see how it goes.

The version of Talk Forward that's available from its web site, you sideload it to the device itself (similar to how you get the Jieshuo screen reader. The version you get from the Play Store, well, it's obvious how that works... Though remember, it's Google. So, it's the Green Light waiting game before a new version goes up.

Betas (unless thingss have changed), can only be gotten from the sideloaded version and not the Play Store one. Join the beta program from the Play Store (again unless things have changed), currently doesn't have any.

This post will be amended if necessary.

After downloading the latest Humanware firmware (which you can read more about at
https://olis.ri.gov/news/articles/2026/nls-bard-support-announcing-nls-braille-ereader-software-update
at your leisure), I finally was able to pair the display using Talk Forward!

So, it seems it wasn't a Talk Forward issue, but more a Humanware one.

Mind you, that's the braille display I myself am using. thus, your milage may vary.

Hi Trenton, Not sure I follow you entirely. I did use the Play Store version, which was updated pretty recently, thru the angle gestures support according to the release note. But still likely behind the beta. I assume you used the beta?
As for HumanWare eReader, it is different but very similar software to the Brailliant Bi-20X. Since mine is already paired with the phone and works with TalkBack, not sure what is going on there. Glad its working for you, maybe it is just a "me" problem. Which is unfortunate for me, but that's ok.

Yup? I am using the beta version at the moment.

The one which you grab via the web site & sideload.

So, what I did was pair the braille display to Bluetooth first, then pair it via the Braille Display Talk Forward settings.

I'd ask around to see if others have said problem with Humanware Braille Displays.

I've not encountered anything new here with iOS 26. Things are normal across my displays. Unless you mean 27 betas, I mostly stay away from early betas and haven't used anything iOS 27.

Oh, there have been a number of posts on this already since iOS 26 first released to the public. If you're not having any issues, then kudos to you good sir.

Braille has always been an adventure. I still recall when iOS 4 wouldn't use my display for most of a year. The long term dream is to get to the standard HID interface and no more proprietary drivers. This is taking an extremely long time. It will be good for Android too.

I'm glad I at least have a few other android braille display users! it's a bit finicky, but I did manage to get my brailliant bi 40x to work with talkForward, and it works just like talkback, except it doesn't use talkback 17 under the hood, so no braille display command customization. one of these days, I hope yanek really opens the braille display side of it up to us instead of restricting what google allows for braille displays. lol.
Just so everyone's aware, talkForward 26.07.06 is out and it fixes a lot of different issues, for those who sideloaded the apk. for the play store, as others have noted, it's a waiting game from google.

Well, at least you can admit that iOS and Braille is not perfect. Kudos to you on that as well.

For transparency sake, here are a list of AppleVis posts from October to June, showcasing some Braille.. quirks.. with iOS 26.

Enjoy. ๐Ÿ˜‡

It just goes to show that even an apple's uniform world, not every configuration works as flawlessly as advertise. ๐Ÿ˜‰
