Hi everyone,
I am experiencing a critical accessibility issue after updating both my screen reader and my browser to their latest versions. I use NVDA on Windows (AMD64) alongside Google Chrome (Version 149.0.7827.54).
The Problem
When I navigate to a password input field where credentials are saved, I use the down arrow key to open and explore the saved accounts dropdown menu. However, NVDA remains completely silent. It does not read any of the items or account names as I arrow through the list.
If I press Enter after arrowing down, Chrome prompts me for biometric authentication (fingerprint) or directs me to the password manager. This confirms that the dropdown menu is active and that I am moving through the choices, but NVDA cannot detect or read the text elements inside these autofill boxes.
The issue seems specifically tied to how the latest Chrome update handles secure input fields and how NVDA reports dynamic changes inside password autocomplete popups.
What I Have Tried So Far
Forcing NVDA into Focus Mode manually using NVDA + Spacebar.
Verifying that "Report dynamic content changes" is enabled in NVDA speech settings.
Running NVDA in safe mode with all add-ons disabled to rule out third-party conflicts.
None of these steps resolved the silence in the password dropdown.
Have any other NVDA or dual-system users encountered this behavior with the recent Chrome updates? If you have found a workaround, a specific Chrome flag to adjust, or an NVDA configuration that fixes this focus loss, please let me know.
Thank you for your help.

Same here
So I ran into the same issue at work running an older version of NVDA and an older version of Crome. I thought maybe our app devs may have done something accidentally but if not then I wonder what happened? Following this thread
Re: Chrome
Just for troubleshooting purposes, have you tried using an alternative browser to see if you get the same results?
@ Brian
Unfortunately I can’t as our dialer system is only on Crome.
@Brian
Yes, I tried using Firefox, and it works perfectly normal there. I know Firefox is not based on Chromium, but it is my only backup browser besides Google Chrome.
@Stephen
Oh, I am sorry to hear that. I have never been a fan of Chrome, even back when it was new and I had fully functional eyesight. 🤷
@Rêzan Salih Îbo
Firefox is boss!
I am glad to hear, that it is working on my preferred browser. 😊
