Hello, everyone!
I'm very pleased to share what I've been working on for the past six weeks.
I know clock apps are pretty niche products,, but in the 13 years I've been an iPhone user, none of them have worked the way I wanted. That’s why I decided it was time to create something of my own.
VAL (Voice and Alarm) is an app for iOS and macOS that lets you use virtually any clock you could want—including those from Steve’s Talking Clock. It comes with six chiming clock sets and two talking ones to get you started.
Key Features
- Import custom clock packs
- Set announcement intervals per clock type
- Proper alarm support via AlarmKit (iOS 26+)
- Simple to use, but highly customizable interface
- Full VoiceOver support
- Import single or multiple clocks via the Files app or Computer Upload
- Quiet Hours
- Advanced scheduling:
- Assign different clocks to different times
- Set unique clocks and announcement frequencies per day
- Optional alarms for schedule start/end times
- Includes a custom file format which allows you to seamlessly transfer your clock library and settings between devices
This is only the beginning, but I’m genuinely excited to finally be able to bring this to you all.
The macOS version is still in review, but I’ll share that link as soon as it’s available.
Note: This is a bundled purchase—buying one version will cover both iOS and macOS.
I really hope you enjoy the app, and happy Friday!

THis is amazing!
Is there any chance you could send me the version which has all of the files to make sure the updated method 4 works correctly?
I'm super excited to try this out.
updates coming soon
Hi all.
I also wanted to let you know updates will be out soon.
I'm just waiting on apple to approve them, and there are quite a few fixes including the scheduler ignoring the "none" setting.
I need your e-mail.
Please send me your e-mail.
I'm happy to provide you all the files I have recorded. None of it is sensibly named but you can figure out what I'm going for haha.

You can message me via the applevis contact form.
I'm pretty sure we have the same idea but either way, this will be super helpful.
I wonder how much she'd charge if we wanted to use this as the default announcement female?
It sounds amazing!
help for problematic announcement files
Hello,
Some clocks have announcement.wav, hour1.wav, and hour2.wav files that are unhelpful or not fit for purpose. To stop them, it is necessary to use a computer to remove those from the zip file and reimport. Could there be switches that could disable these for a particular clock? RC SYSTEMS repeater for instance says "good morning" in the file that plays on the other intervals, regardless of time of day. Other TTS clocks have files that are rather useless.
Apple Watch Support?
I'm not sure if a clock app is somethingI'd ever have much use for, but I'm curious if it's ever going to be available for use on the Apple Watch. If it was, that might make it slightly more appealing for me. I have my watch set to chime every 15 minutes because it helps me keep track of time. The little bell sound is nice and discrete, but I don't always hear it, so if this app might offer alternative sounds or something, that might be fun.
apple watch
Hi Missy.
Good to see you here.
Apple does not allow for third party apps to use custom notification sounds which is why I have not added apple watch support.
Plus, the ultra's the only one which could really benefit from time checks because of its action button.
Of course if apple decides to open this up a bit more, I'll be the first to jump on the☺️.
Wow!
Love this so much. Just downloaded it last night and already got some of Steve’s clocks imported. Everything is working perfectly so far. I’ve always wanted something like this on the Mac. I used Steve’s Clock a lot on Windows, so having this experience on macOS now is seriously awesome.
Keep up the amazing work. I’ll definitely continue posting feedback here if I come across any ideas or suggestions, if that’s alright.
Will make sure to get the iPhone version.
please do!
Yes, that is exactly what this thread is for ☺️.
There is a macos update still waiting for review, but it should hopefully get through today.
an update for those not on mastodon
Hi all.
I'm aware of an issue where the time voice was following announcement, rather than sticking to its own schedule while custom quarters are on.
I'm running it through testflight to make sure things are working but if they are, I will release an incremental update which will include this fix.
Thanks for response about watch supportq
I appreciate you answering my questions about the watch. I have the Apple Watch Ultra 3, but since Apple doesn't make a watch version of your app worthwhile, it makes perfect sense that you haven't developed one. Maybe someday, we'll be allowed to have custome notification sounds on the watch. Honestly, I've never understood why we're not able to have the same notification sounds on the watch that our phones use, but that's just Apple being Apple, I suppose.
agreed
Trust me, I'd love to have it on my watch, especially if I can use the bong clock on my wrist to annoy people as I used to do when I was a kid in the 2000's 😂
I've also been doing some more work and will submit an update on Wednesday for the time voice issue, along with a fix for nested zip files and an issue which could sometimes cause the app to play the default notification sound after installing updates.
Someone needs to make a Clock for the old talking watches
There was an incredibly annoying talking watch that used to be like a dime a dozen, you could buy them at like $10 at Radioshack. It was plastic with a square face, it had three buttons, the top left one would say the time, the top Wright would toggle hourly report and the bottom middle Wood toggle alarm. That was also a groove recessed to the left of the bottom button that let you set the time. It was incredibly annoying, and someone needs to make a talking Clock of that one. If anyone knows what I’m talking about, feel free to chime in.
i think we're talking about the same one.
Yep, I think we're talking about the same one.
It had the rooster alarm, and that obnoxious bong before every announcement?
I know exactly the one you're talking about
I thought for sure it had 4 buttons though, lol. I don't own one though. But they were rampant in the 90's and early to mid 2000's.
I found it
I found 'em for like $20 on maxiaids.

Nope..... don't need this.... not at all....
Talking watches
I owned many talking watches over many years, and some of these included the one which has been mentioned here. Over here, the button for the time was positioned at the top right, the toggle for the hourly chime was at the bottom right, the recessed button was top left and the other button was underneath the recessed one.
A talking watch file which would be cool to have would be the one for the original vox watch, released in the mid 1980s. I never owned this one, but I owned the second generation vox watch from the early 90s. If I had known about the original vox watch before asking for a Satoki, I would have gone for that one instead. I know the Vox clocks are part of Steve's clock, but sadly, the watches are not.
Does anyone remember the Sako watch from the early 90s? I never owned one, but, in my opinion, the voice was awful. The only thing I liked about it was that it also spoke in Spanish.
Japanese seko
The only talking watch I’ve ever had from seko was a modern one released in 2020 which spoke Japanese. No way I would ever make a talking Clock out of that one.
My Chiming and Talking Clocks for VAL
Hi everyone, I'm excited to share some of the clocks I have created for VAL. I have uploaded everything to Dropbox and divided it into two folders: Chiming/Musical and Talking. Here’s what’s included, starting with the Chiming/Musical folder: A Howard Miller triple chime clock recorded on the Westminster setting. I fully intend to record the clock’s Whittington and Winchester options very soon. I recently got a pickup coil, which has allowed me to record two of my quartz battery-operated clocks. The first is my Seiko QXJ008BLH, which features Seiko’s very common dual-chime movement with Westminster and Whittington chimes. The second is a clock I’ve had since 2012, a Rhythm CRJ717 mantel clock. This one features Westminster quarters as well as two sets of melodies: Classical and Christmas. The Classical set is included now, and I will be uploading the Christmas melodies very shortly. The Talking folder includes three options: Two versions based on my own voice. Both use the same recordings, but version two omits the introductory “The time is” announcement, making it a bit quicker. The third option may be nostalgic for some of you: the classic Four Alarm talking clock. If you want to try these out, you can access them below. The first link allows you to browse the contents and download items individually through Dropbox. The second link is a direct download if you’d prefer to grab everything in one click. Creating these has brought me a lot of joy. It’s a really neat feeling to be able to bring my clocks pretty much everywhere. And if you liked the Gingerbread clock bundled with the app, I recorded that one as well. I also recorded the Howard Miller in a very similar way. I’d love to know what you think of these clocks. Also, feel free to check these links periodically, because as I create new clocks, they will be added to the folder. Enjoy! View the Clocks on Dropbox Download all Clocks
Christmas is amazing!
When this app first came out, I was simply glad to have a customizable set of chimes on my phone, but browsing the already existing archives and hearing about contributions from the community is such a joy. Thanks to all involved, and I truly look forward to having a set of Christmas chimes for the Winter season!
Quiet Hours vs Focus settings?
Hi! Did I understand correctly that using the IOS focus modes to silence Val is more resource saving than val's Quiet Hours as far as notification usage? And just curious why it wouldn't be the other way, as Val wouldn't be reserving notification slots if it were in Quiet Hours perhaps? Right now I'm just using IOS focus, as my way of keeping everything but actual alarms or emergency notifications quiet at present. But I'm guessing that Quiet Hours is great when you aren't changing focus settings? Is there another subtilty of this I'm missing? Again, fantastic product, and thank you again.
quiet hours and notification slots
Hi Kevin.
Basically, the app has two type of notifications it schedules, one shot and repeated.
The issue is when the app schedules notifications ahead of time.
When repeated notifications are used, they occur at the same time every day, and don't need background app refresh at all.
The problem happens when you're using a talking clock which speaks every 15 minutes for example.
Every announcement is a separate notification, and the 64 notification quota will pass long before the day is over.
Chiming clocks can also exceed this threshold if you have a schedule which is 15 hours. eg. 7:00AM to 10:00PM since if the clock is melody plus strikes, that's five notifications per hour for 15 hours, vs using an all day or 12 hour schedule, they can collapse into repeated hourly notifications.
I'm sorry if this is confusing since it was for me too, but you should generally be fine using quiet hours, but there's a chance you may have to re open the app after a while if iOs stops allowing it to wake itself up.
This is also why the westminster chimes app won't allow anything beyond a 12 hour span since it only uses repeated notifications.
