Hello, everyone!
I'm very pleased to share what I've been working on for the past six weeks.
I know clock apps are pretty niche products,, but in the 13 years I've been an iPhone user, none of them have worked the way I wanted. That’s why I decided it was time to create something of my own.
VAL (Voice and Alarm) is an app for iOS and macOS that lets you use virtually any clock you could want—including those from Steve’s Talking Clock. It comes with six chiming clock sets and two talking ones to get you started.
Key Features
- Import custom clock packs
- Set announcement intervals per clock type
- Proper alarm support via AlarmKit (iOS 26+)
- Simple to use, but highly customizable interface
- Full VoiceOver support
- Import single or multiple clocks via the Files app or Computer Upload
- Quiet Hours
- Advanced scheduling:
- Assign different clocks to different times
- Set unique clocks and announcement frequencies per day
- Optional alarms for schedule start/end times
- Includes a custom file format which allows you to seamlessly transfer your clock library and settings between devices
This is only the beginning, but I’m genuinely excited to finally be able to bring this to you all.
The macOS version is still in review, but I’ll share that link as soon as it’s available.
Note: This is a bundled purchase—buying one version will cover both iOS and macOS.
I really hope you enjoy the app, and happy Friday!

Thank you so much.
I'm so glad you're enjoying it.
Unfortunately, apple does not allow that level of control but it it is a great idea!
Regarding the alarms, I may revisit this down the line depending on how high the demand is.
Caching could work, but the app has no way of knowing how many times the user is going to snooze the alarm and it could still break.
The one thing which will be coming for sure will be a community library which can be accessed through the app itself for both uploading and downloading clocks people make, new and old.
I'm hoping we will be able to get some new ones post Steve's clock.
My suggestions and feedback.
I LOVE this app. It's Grand Clock on steroids. If you've used that app, you know.
Here are my suggestions:
Overall, as a clock enthusiast, this is a dream come true. It would be nice if maybe on the clock tab, you could play a ticking sound like tick.wav and just loop it, and that could be used as the ticking sound? That would be cool.
Also, if you want help with anything on the app, please feel free to reach out.
I started using Grand Clock in 2015 or 2016, and it was great until it got pulled. I didn't like the Westminster chimes apps even though I had bought those because of their MIDI chimes.
Your app takes everything I loved about Grand Clock and scales it up by a million!
As a person who wishes they had more mechanical chiming clocks, I love this app and it's fantastic! Keep up the great work!
Can't wait to see what future versions bring!
in response to Levi
Hi!
Again, thank you so much for your feedback and suggestions.
I can and will absolutely note these things down, and the addition of the spacebar will be one of the first things added. I actually would love to add the extra precision to the chime splitter and countdown areas, and maybe even have an option for doing this with quarters?
Each one could have its own adjustment to make sure it lines up.
Okay, in writing this I'm absolutely obsessed with this idea 😂
Okay, back to the post, I don't really know the best way to go about handling ticking.
Maybe each clock could have a file called "tick" or ticktock", and it could loop?
I'm also not really sure how to present it as a setting, and to handle the talking clocks smoothly since some people may use both.
Lastly...
I just might have all of the grand clock sounds 😉.
Keep an eye on this thread for updates.
Sorry, I meant to address the rest.
My apologies, I meant to answer the rest of your questions.
Yes, I will also look into a quick announcement toggle as well, and I love the idea of having it run a little slow/fast.
I will work on getting all of this implemented, and it's always nice to find fellow enthusiasts.
Always use splits
I think I will also add a setting for chiming clocks to always accept splits and not ask every single time as well.
reverse engineering?
I just downloaded the code, and am going to use the same reverse engineering as the TT media bot I have.
This way, it can be distributed without using the SDK.
how you could implament ticking/more feedback/suggestions.
Just do it the same way grand clock does.
I haven't looked at the sounds for it, but I actually started a project like this which does incorperate ticking. The way I did it was to have tick.wav or whatever the file extension was just loop. The user could turn up or down the volume. If you wanted to be fancy you could automatically create the looping point and give users the option to modify it just like splits.
You could then add a background mode entitlement in xcode, specifically the
Audio, AirPlay, and Picture in Pictureoption. In fact, this would allow you to play chimes without sending notifications, but only while the app is open.
Maybe somehow destroy notifications right before they get sent if the app is opened so you could just play them like macOS?
also, a volume slider on iOS would be nice. Just select the volume, then rerender the files, just like you do for splits/fades.
I'll probably have loads more feedback! If you want me to help test future versions I can and would love to.
This is the app I've always dreamed of owning.
If this app was $10, or even $20, I would have bought it in a heart beat.
testing
Yes, I would love to have you test it.
I checked your profile, but I don't see an email listed.
I'd also love to talk more about this off thread somehow if you'd be up for it?
Again, really love your ideas.
Definitely would love to help!
I think emails on profiles are private.
You can contact me on my applevis profile which will send me an email, then I can reply to that if you are ok with that.
just tried your link
I just clicked your link and got this.
The page that you are trying to view either does not exist or has been removed.
weird, it worked for someone else.
go to https://www.applevis.com/users/25801 and you should see a contact tab. Let me know if that works.
two suggestions
Hi,
First, I'm sure there's not a way to do this, but would it ever be possible to have the alarms come exclusively out of a connected headset or bluetooth device and not use the speaker? I'm sure not, and this is a feature with the apple alarms and even android alarms I've never understood. I just think if someone shares a room and sleeps with a bluetooth headset, why should their alarm wake up the roommate?
Also, cuckoo clocks... do you think you might be able to implement a setting for it to sound only once an hour? Instead of having it sound 10 times for 10 o'clock, 11 times for 11, 12 times for 12 o'clock, etc. just have a setting where people can have it sound once an hour. Just an idea.
Moopie Curran
Thank you for the suggestions.
Unfortunately, apple does not allow alarms to go through the headset alone, at least not with alarmkit.
I do agree with you though.
Regarding the cuckoo, I could make a version of it which just plays the single file on the hour and will link it in another comment ☺️.
More thanks and suggestions!
Having run the app for about a day now, it really is lovely. Also seems that this thread is (unsurprisingly,) collecting a lot of previous Grand Clock fans, as I also loved this program while it existed!
Last night I was able to try the scheduling feature--lovely as the chimes are, they don't need to be going off in the midst of a choir practice--and it worked perfectly! That's a very good feature I'm surprised is only now being done.
One suggestion, though. I did see the announcements toggle added to the clock home screen, and that works perfectly fine, but I wonder if it would be possible to also add this to the control center as a widget? It's no trouble if not, as it's fairly easy to pop the app open and disable the announcements, but I think being able to disable them quickly from anywhere, without having to leave whatever screen you might be on, would be very useful. In a similar vein, might it be possible to make the enabling/disabling of announcements accessible via the backtap in the same way you might a calling of the time? This would be another potential way to adjust this quickly, without even unlocking the phone, to boot.
Thank you again!
Faerie
Yes, the control center is something I already have planned for 1.1, and I will also work on getting back tap/action button functionality baked in as well.
VAL Review
I eagerly awaited the release of this clock application. While it's very nice and definitely super-accessible, I'm hoping for more and better clock recordings to add to it. For instance, the Westminster selections are all very nice, but some of them were recorded quite far away from the source, adding a lot of unwanted room ambience to the recording. Also, I've only discovered one clock that's actually stereo, and it's not a full-on Westminster-style implementation--no quarter-, half- and three-quarter-hour chimes, just a single bong. However, the stereo sound of the single chime used is pretty impressive. Here's hoping for more, not just sounds, but more applications from this author/developer.
in reply to Steve Matzura
thank you for your review.
I honestly agree with all of this.
Part of the problem is it's nearly impossible to find all 12 hours and quarters recorded cleanly, and I don't yet have clocks of my own to record.
If I'm able to find higher quality recordings, I'd update the bundled sounds for sure.
Once the community library goes live, I may open submission candidates for new default chiming and spoken options as well since I would really, really prefer not not to have used elevenlabs at all.
I also agree about the stereo.
I'd had loved for the colonial, Hamilton and others to have been recorded with the same mic as the gingerbread.
UK
Maybe someone who lives in England can record Big Ben for use, is that allow. Long live meows.
big ben
That would be amazing.
I do have a big ben clock but it uses method six which I really, really do not like.
I love the announcements
I love the announcements. I really don’t like 11 labs but I’m using a human female Clock I found in the Steve’s library for now. It’s good enough until we get something better. Seriously, this app is awesome, I’ve been looking for something like this for the iPhone for years, just never found one that did the talking Clock correctly.
mantle clock
I actually have a westminster mantle clock which was made for Steve's clock and has nice audio, but it also uses method six ☹️.
I also now have VAL on my iPad
I downloaded VAL onto my iPad this morning and chose another favourite voice from Steve's talking clock: the same voice which was used in the Sharp talking calculator. I owned 2 of these calculators at different times, and the voice brings back so many happy memories.
I also loved Grand Clock back in the day, but I love the 2 voices I chose even more because of the nostalgia.
Thank you for VAL!
I installed this app on Monday and have had it running on my iPhone 17 Pro Max and it’s wonderful! The real clock sounds are wonderful I look forward to future developments! Thanks.
Installed on second iPhone
I love this app so much that I also installed it on my older iPhone with a different clock. Now one phone cuckoos while another chimes, Lol. My grandmother loved clocks and always had at least 15 that either chimed or made some sort of sound, so hearing these sounds is nostalgic for me.
Potential bug with schedules
Hello everyone!
Please can you try and duplicate the following, as I think there is a bug with the scheduler.
1. Add a schedule, such as a temporary one.
2. Set the clock to none.
3. Expected result: announcements are paused when the schedule is active.
4. Actual result: schedule behaves as if they did not exist.
Using first update after initial release.
Thank you. I await your reply.
thank you
Thank you for posting this.
I will have a look at it and also monitor the thread.
The bug where vo would jump to the top of the screen at the bottom of the "default alarm clock" screen, as well as the "default announcement clock" screen has been squashed as well, so fixes are coming ☺️.
responding to Chris
HeyChris.
I did catch the scheduler bg, and am trying a fix on my own devices now.
THis will be part of the next update.
Stretch goal on talking clocks
It would be really cool if there was a mode similar to this.
It’s the old Speaking Clock when you would call a number and hear the time. This is the Australian version but it’d be cool if this app could do something like that, maybe we could even write to the person who made this website and get those recordings.
confused about making an hourly clock
Hi,
I made what I THOUGHT was an hourly clock with different sounds for each hour (12 hour format, so 12 different sounds), and an alarm sound. But yet, it classified this as a simple clock. What am I doing wrong? They're labelled 1, 2 , 3, 4, 5, etc.
Thanks
hourly clocks
Hi.
They should be nameed hour01-12, or hour00-23.
In your case, you'd want from hour01 to hour12.
Creative Clocks are great too.
Val is working very very well on my iPhone and my mac. Have had zero problems with either one thus far. Very nice work. Also have to give a shout out to all the clock audio compilers and creators out there. Its cool to have all the old hardware clocks archived, but what is really cool is how some of you have found such creative ways to announce the time. My most congratulations to the author of the "Piano major and Minor" packs. Those are really over the top creatively. Thanks too all.
Kevin
clocks and alarms
Wow, this is awesome! I'm thinking about ordering this. I have some questions though.
1. How can you find different clocks and alarm sounds to add/import?
2. Can you import your own sound effeccts into the app and use them as alarm sounds, and if so, how?
3. Can timers and alarms have different sounds? For instance, with alarms, let's say you have one for waking up in the morning and/or a nap, and then you have another one for say taking meds at a certain time. Is this possible, even if it's in one clock? For timers, let's say you are making 2 different things in the air fryer Can you have 2 timers so sound different, even in the same clock?
In response to Dawn
HI Dawn.
Great questions!
No, timers are not part of the app, but yes you can absolutely import your own sounds to use as clocks which can optionally contain alarm sounds.
Currently, the best way to use and try different clocks is to either record or use ones from the Steve's clock archive, although I do anticipate we will eventually start seeing new ones floating around.
A community library is also planned, which will make it possible to both upload and download clocks others have made.
You can however set multiple alarms.
ex. one in the morning and another for medications.
I hope this helps.
Really enjoying this app
Hello there. I know I'm rather late to the party, but I found out about your awesome chiming clock app when I heard about it from a certain blind youTuber. I have to tell you, I'm loving it! And as I'm typing this, the colonial westminster clock was chiming the half hour. I'm still rather nervous about adding new chiming clocks, mainly because I'm not sure where to find some. Anyway, to conclude, this is a great app. I'm excited to see what new features are coming next. Keep up the great work!
i'm so glad to hear this!
Hi Lydia.
Thank you so much for your kind words.
I just finished some fixes and will hopefully be submitting an update to both platforms by Friday at the latest.
Feel free to send a message on here or on this thread, and I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have.
This goes for all of you.
will be uploading a couple clocks soon
First of all.... I've been loving this app.
Second.... I splurged for my birthday and got myself a clock commissioned which I'm going to be uploading for the community. It's a British female voice in a studio setup, akin to the talking clocks of old but the recordings were made specifically for the app. I found her on voice123 and she's doing the recording today.
I am having a lot of files made, separate files for hours and minutes for example, and so it'll be ready when you release the really huge method that allows for hours and minutes files.
I'm also going to do a male clock for the community.
Stay tuned and I'll upload them soon!
woooww!
Wow techluver.
You really did go above and beyond, and this will be super helpful for allowing me to test these new methods.
I am very excited to see these.
Question for those of you on this thread, what should a method supporting past, till, etc be called?
That's one of the others I really want to do but cannot think of a name.
Again, thank you so much for doing this and I'm super excited for these!
thanks
maybe digital clock?
I didn't get a quarter past, half past or quarter to recorded because I was paying by the word and that's not the type of talking clock I personally like in English haha.
It's delayed because my sound editor can't get to splitting all the files until sunday.
another question, please forgive me if I 've asked already
I have another question. Forgive me if I asked this already. But, I was kinda tired last night when I was browsing. :-) ;-)
My question is how can I find clocks? I will say that I'm excited for the community library! Because, that will make it easier, and more fun! :-) ;-)
finding clocks
Hi. Please don't apologize for asking questions. That is what this thread is for, after all. The Steve's clock archive has plenty you can use, and I ( (along with some others) have posted some on mastodon. I too am very excited for the library and, and hope it will bring about entirely new creations from people.
not on mastadon
Can Someone link the clocks on mastadon here? I can't wait for my perfect clock.... I've had the image of my perfect iPhone talking clock in my head for so many years and I'm so glad this software can make it a reality.
copyright
The only reason I haven't posted them on here directly is so I don't get flagged.
There weren't very many, apart from the dumb SOS one I made last night, the apple watch birds and repurposed files from that old chime app which had the roman numerals and musical chords.
bug on macOS
Finally got around to installing on MacOS.
BUg. In the first setup window where you pick clocks. if you try to play audio while other audio is playing, it will crash the app on mac. seems to work fine on iPhone.
actually lots of bugs on MacOS
I hit several crashes on mac.
1. trying to play audio while other things are playing.
2. switching the global keystroke on and off.
3. Honestly.... it crashed and I'm not sure why.
crashes
That's very strange.
The simultaneous playback issue has already been fixed, and will look into the hotkey toggle.
Are you on intel or apple silicon?
update on crashes
SO, I just tried to play audio from the app while other audio was playing, and it worked.
Perhaps this ended up patched as a result of the issue causing announcements to stop if the time was checked during one?
COuld you tell me what you were using to play the audio as well and which macos version you're running as well?
Very latest
I’m just using the very latest staple build of macOS 26. Using headphones with my 3.5.mm jack plugged into my M1 Max MacBook Pro that handles everything. I’ve had this thing for 4 years and it’s been reliable as rain.
Thank you
I just wanted to check for any false positives is all ☺️.
Would love to buy this but I have no cash
this app is awesome for what I’ve been hearing about it. Would love to test it out myself but I don’t have cash on my Apple account
uploading a talking clock
Hello!
Here's a talking clock for the community. I commissioned this since my dream has always been to have a professional, british female clock on the iPhone, just like the talking watches of old.
The woman who voiced this for me has appeared on several commercials in the U.K., and was willing to give me a cut price rate on this since she wanted to help us out as well.
Please don't misuse this.
I have a lot more files, it's currently set up for the way the clock works now but I have about an extra 60 files that we're not using but I'll add in when the really huge method gets updated.
I stole the hour1 and hour2 files from the original clock.
Again, I worked with her on this and have permission to post this.

I hope you all enjoy. this is my dream clock.
