Hello, everyone!

I'm very pleased to share what I've been working on for the past six weeks.

I know clock apps are pretty niche products,, but in the 13 years I've been an iPhone user, none of them have worked the way I wanted. That’s why I decided it was time to create something of my own.

VAL (Voice and Alarm) is an app for iOS and macOS that lets you use virtually any clock you could want—including those from Steve’s Talking Clock. It comes with six chiming clock sets and two talking ones to get you started.

Key Features

  • Import custom clock packs
  • Set announcement intervals per clock type
  • Proper alarm support via AlarmKit (iOS 26+)
  • Simple to use, but highly customizable interface
  • Full VoiceOver support
  • Import single or multiple clocks via the Files app or Computer Upload
  • Quiet Hours
  • Advanced scheduling:
    • Assign different clocks to different times
    • Set unique clocks and announcement frequencies per day
    • Optional alarms for schedule start/end times
  • Includes a custom file format which allows you to seamlessly transfer your clock library and settings between devices

This is only the beginning, but I’m genuinely excited to finally be able to bring this to you all.

The macOS version is still in review, but I’ll share that link as soon as it’s available.

Note: This is a bundled purchase—buying one version will cover both iOS and macOS.

I really hope you enjoy the app, and happy Friday!

In an earlier comment to this thread, a member of the community posted a link to a .zip archive containing all of the clocks available on the website for Steve's Talking Clock. We reached out to the creator of Steve's Talking Clock, and at his request, we wish to remind everyone that the above-linked archive did not originate from the website for Steve's Talking Clock. Users should be aware that the aforementioned archive is a third-party compilation.

Hi,

Will there be a shortcut or control I could assign to my action button to announce current time with the main clock chosen in the UI?

By Quinton Williams on Tuesday, April 28, 2026 - 16:48

Hi Shawn.
Yes, this does exist and can be configured separately from announcements if you wish.
For example, you can use a chiming clock for announcements, then a talking one for your action button.
I'm looking into adding a global announcement toggle for control center as well, along with significant upgrades to talking clocks including additional settings and a new method.
This will all be part of 1.1.

By Shawn T on Tuesday, April 28, 2026 - 17:03

Glad to hear! I'm looking forward to having the Sharp Talking Time announce every half hour, but also something I can trigger with the action button.

Hi,

I have more questions: first, there is an app that I use called chime speaking clock app, and I enjoy the sound of the digital watch beep every hour. can the digital watch beep be used for both your app, as well as the other app for macos? if yes, that's awesome. also, will there be an audio demo available for anyone to listen to? if yes, I hope there will be an audio demo of this app so that I can hear a demo of what the app sounds like for anyone who is interested in hearing it in action before making a purchase.

Hi all.
I just thought I'd provide an update.
It's good news, I promise :).
I've been working on some updates which I will release after Monday since I want the currently approved builds to go out right on schedule.
One of the things you may notice is pausing between phrases with talking clocks.
In the version which I will be releasing soon next week, you can opt for pauses or for the files to play seamlessly from one to another.
I'm preparing for a new clock method, and am laying the groundwork for more talking clock specific settings and the multilingual support.
This includes allowing method 4 to be able to have separate hour and minute files.
I'll let the release notes tell the rest, but will post on this thread once the updates go out so you can all grab them ASAP.

By Quinton Williams on Saturday, May 2, 2026 - 13:25

This is definitely possible, although I'm not sure if it will ever happen since it would mean hours get skipped and it wouldn't be necessarily even.
Although, if demand for it is high enough I can certainly add it.

By Shawn T on Sunday, May 3, 2026 - 15:45

Hello,

Is it possible to remove bundled clocks that we don't wish to use? Slower westminster clocks are something I don't ever plan to use. Also, if someone has a lower capacity device, I'm concerned about the size of the app. How large is it by default?

By Quinton Williams on Sunday, May 3, 2026 - 15:46

Yes, this is possible.
They're mainly there to get people started, but can absolutely be removed.

By Holger Fiallo on Sunday, May 3, 2026 - 17:22

Just did so, hope is worth it. Long live cats.

By Quinton Williams on Sunday, May 3, 2026 - 22:03

There will be a series of two updates, the first of which will be out tomorrow and the second should be by Wednesday.
Previewing will be a voiceover action, as well as the current magic tap.
I've included release notes as well, and will release them to everyone at once rather than phases.

By ming on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 02:00

hey! can we have the chime sound and the anouncement together?

By Holger Fiallo on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 03:57

Can it be made to work on the watch and if so, use a chime. Apple's chime does not work well and the sound is to low. Long live cats.

By Quinton Williams on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 03:59

Unfortunately, apple does not allow for custom sounds to be used, otherwise I would for sure have this up and running.
I suppose we'll see what happens with WWDC ☺️.

Absolutely great app! 10/10, would recommend!

Are there any cuckoo clock sounds out there that could be used? I used to have one through an Android app called Chime Time. It was literally the reason I kept an old Android device around, but then the app was no longer supported. I've been searching for cuckoo clock sounds since then.

By Christopher Hallsworth on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 11:27

Brilliant app! 10 out of 10 highly recommended! Hold this thought but how about either a timer function or a separate timer app?

By David Standen on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 11:36

I now have VAL on my iPhone. Unfortunately, I have no way of importing the clock I would really like to use for announcements, which is the Sharpe Talking Time I. When I attempted to download the Steve's Talking Clock program onto my Windows machine, I was informed the program could not be downloaded securely. However, my operating system of choice is the Mac. Would it be possible for somebody, who has this clock already, to create an example for this voice so other mac users, who may also wish to use this voice, can import the clock into VAL? I would really like this clock for nostalgia. Apologies if this is unable to be done, but I just thought I would ask.

By Quinton Williams on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 11:51

I made one, but it was sliced from a ringtone since finding all hours is pretty much impossible, but if you still have that device with chimetime they can be extracted.
I did this with the hermle westminster and the default aberdeen.

By Quinton Williams on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 11:57

Yes, I actually have that on my phone and computer.
You don't need the Steve's clock program.
The zip file containing the clock will be enough to import into the app, and changing .exe to .zip will work as well.

By Quinton Williams on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 12:06

Here is a link to the one I built from a ringtone. I've been trying (and failing) to find full samples so this is what I have for now. grab it here

By Brooke on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 12:24

I hadn't even thought of grabbing the files from the old Android app. here's hoping the device will even boot up, it's been about 6 years since it was actually used. Will let you know if I have any luck. I remember the app had 2 cuckoo clocks... I believe they were called Hunter Cuckoo and Forest Cuckoo, but I could be way off.

By Faerie on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 12:24

Thank you for this app. It's chiming away now, making my room sound bright, airy and cozy! Straight forward enough to just get up and running, complex enough for power use as well. I could definitely see things like switching to a different clock sound to mark work hours etc. Quiet hours is also a lovely touch. When the control center toggle comes it will be absolutely perfect!

One tiny thing, I think the delete clocks feature might be broken. I went to delete the announcement packs, since I have specific interest in the chimes only, and was able to select them in edit mode. However, though it said two clocks were selected, the delete button was dimmed. Not at all a big deal, just thought you should know!

By Christopher Hallsworth on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 12:33

I can duplicate, however I don't think it's a bug, as these are built in to the app. In other words, you should only be able to delete clocks that have been imported. Could be wrong though of course, but hold that thought for now.

By Holger Fiallo on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 13:28

Since I did pre order, I hope I can download the app today. Long live cats.

By Zach M on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 15:44

Holger, it should've automatically downloaded to your device automatically. it didn't auto download to the mac, but it did my phone. Check the app store.

By Quinton Williams on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 15:56

Hi all.
Thank you so much for the comments.
I really do appreciate them very much.
As for deleting, no this is actually not how things should behave, and will be looking into this as part of an update.
Brook, the extraction may be annoying depending on how familiar you are with ADB, but if you can somehow get the cuckoo APK's off of that device, I can handle figuring out how they're structured and converting them into val compatible packs.

By Holger Fiallo on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 15:58

No did not. What know?

By Holger Fiallo on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 16:04

I check again and yesterday it was $3.90 and now is $6.99. Yesterday it told me I would not be charge until the app was out. Confuse. Long live cats.

By Quinton Williams on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 16:06

Yes, the price went up to full price today since it's release day.
if you pre ordered it, then you should have been locked in.

By Quinton Williams on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 16:07

One more note, 1.0.3 made it through app review for macos and am just waiting on iOS.
The deletion fix will be in 1.0.4 for both platforms, and will post here once it makes it through:).

By Zach M on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 16:16

if it doesn't show up as redownload and it says $6.99, that means you didn't actually pre-order it. Check your bank. if it charged you, then you're good. If you didn't? well, now ya have to pay full price.
Long Live Ferrets

By Quinton Williams on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 16:19

Zach, please stop mocking.
If I'd put my own money into an app and it wasn't showing up when it is supposed to, I'd want to know why as well.

By Holger Fiallo on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 16:25

Did check, nothing. However the message I got when I got it I will not be charge until the app is out. I will wait several days to see. If did not go through, will not get it. $6.90 is to mach. Long live cats.

By Zach M on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 16:37

OK, yeah. that might be something worth calling apple support about, if you're sure you hit the preorder button. that is probably something on apple's end.

By Brian on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 16:46

Hi,

How battery intensive is this application? Note I have not pre-ordered it, but if it's worth it I have no problem paying the full price for it for my iPhone. Just concerned that this will be one of those apps that eats battery like a chocolate chip cookie.

TIA.

By Christopher Hallsworth on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 17:01

So I went into the battery section of settings. According to my own data, Val is using 7% more, which to me is no big deal. Again this is on an iPhone 16+ running 26.4.1. Hope this helps someone looking to purchasing this wonderful app :)

By Brooke on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 17:06

The device won't even boot. I was afraid of that. I have another Android-based device and thought I might be able to pull a version of the app from the app history, but it's completely gone, doesn't even show it ever existed.

By Quinton Williams on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 17:34

: macos and iOS versions 1.0.3 have been approved and are now available as updates. Go ahead and grab them now.

By 780KixxFan on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 18:24

Hi there. This is an awesome app, really enjoying it today. I downloaded the Steve's Talking Clocks archive that someone posted on here last week. I have the .zip file on my iPad, just not clear on how to import the clocks into the app. Anyone's help would be appreciated. And above all, congrats on this great app!

By Quinton Williams on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 18:27

Hi!
I'd be happy to help.
You can import them either through the sharesheet or through the app itself.
In the app, go to "view and manage clocks", then import which is near the bottom.
You'll find you can use several methods to import depending on your preference.
Note, you can still use the "one clock" option since the app can detect multiple clocks in one zip file and allows you to import them in batches.
I hope this helps.

I honestly wish there was a really good human female clock. 11 labs is nice but… What can I say? you want what you want Wright? I’m gonna see if I can get a friend to do one for me. She has a melodious voice that would be a lovely Clock. I’ll see if she’ll let me share it once she’s done with it.

By Quinton Williams on Monday, May 4, 2026 - 21:54

I don't disagree.
I just don't know anyone who would record one, although I'd gladly replace it if I found someone.
Perhaps I'll have submissions of some sort?

By Kevin U on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 - 10:52

Hi! Under "Schedules" where there is an option for custom time announcement frequency, might it be possible to include smaller values like 10, 5, or even 1 minute? This may sound silly, but I'm thinking of a schedule where you don't need an alarm, but might need several reminders within a short period of time. E.g., like every minute between 8:55am and 9:00am on Sunday morning. I often use something like this to get cues to start something that needs to start right on the top of a particular minut, then don't need it again for several days. Just a thought. So far all seems very good and very useable! Thank you for all your hard work!

Kevin

By Kevin U on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 - 10:57

Hi! Perhaps this has already been updated, but haven't had a chance to check yet. Would it be possible to have no vibration after chimes finish on an interval schedule? Or, is that double vibration (before and after chimes) unique to me? Thanks much.

Kevin

By David Standen on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 - 11:30

Quentin, thank you so much for your help regarding downloading this voice. I downloaded the zip archive onto my iPhone this morning whilst travelling to work, found the clocks folder and imported the file into VAL. It has been chiming happily every 15 minutes, which is my preference, ever since. I have also set a weekday morning alarm to wake me up, and am now using this in preference to the alarm I used to use on my apple watch. I really appreciate all the hard work you have put into the app.

In terms of battery usage, I only worked inside the VAL app for 7 minutes, but it has only drained 1% of my battery, with the chime sounding nearly all day. I am using an iPhone 17 Pro max.

By Quinton Williams on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 - 12:34

Really, thank you all so much.
I'll answer both questions.
In response to Kevin, the double vibrations happen because iOs has a 30 second notification limit, which means chimes and longer sounds need to be split to be able to play and vibrating is a side effect of it.
David, I'm so glad you're enjoying the app!
This is precisely why I'd developed it in the first place ☺️.

By Kyler G on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 - 14:31

Quinton, absolutely great job on this! I'm currently using "Brit Watch" from the Steve's clock archive and it sounds great! This kinda makes me wonder something though. You'd probably have to pair up with a hardware team to do this, but you know how some Bluetooth speakers only play the music from your phone and not VoiceOver? I think it'd be cool if there was a "watch" whose purpose was to trigger time checks and play announcements configured through VAL. Maybe then you could get the alarms to speak the time? Sorry; my brain's all over the place.
Also, I had a thought on that. You mentioned it fell apart when the alarm was snoozed. Is it possible that there was some sort of data caching going on that could be causing this? Theoretically, if someone sets an alarm for 6:00 AM the next morning, could that file be rendered before 6:00 AM, then deleted and re-created for a snooze time? Sorry; I'm not too technical but just an idea.
Last thing, I promise: I tested out setting an alarm on the first night for 6:00 AM the next morning set to Cobolt Talking Clock (Alarm 3) and I got a notification on my phone beforehand but then the actual alarm just played "Radial". Don't know if this has happened to anyone else but just something I noticed.
