Are there any global online communities for the blind to talk about... well, everything?

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out today because I’ve been wondering about something.

I’m looking for online communities, forums, or social media where blind individuals from all over the world gather to chat about general topics—not just the technical stuff.

From what I’ve seen, most of our current spaces are quite specialized, focusing heavily on things like gaming or technology. I’m thinking of sites like:
- AppleVis
- AudioGames.net
- qcsalon.net

While these are great, what I’m really craving is a space for the "everything else": lifestyle, culture, sports, music, travel, or even just some relaxed, aimless rambling.

I’m familiar with Ramblio, and it’s a fantastic platform, but I personally prefer text-based communication. There’s something special about scrolling through friends' thoughts while my favorite speakers are playing in the background. And if I stumble upon a quote that resonates with me, I love being able to linger on that line and read it over a few more times.

I know I could find these conversations on mainstream social media, but I’m looking for that unique connection with the global blind community. There is a depth of shared experience and perspective there that sighted people simply can’t provide.

When someone mentions a vacation spot or a city’s sidewalks, the conversation changes depending on who’s talking. If a sighted person says, "This park is amazing," they usually mean it’s visually stunning. But when a blind person says it’s "amazing," we’re talking about accessibility, the layout, and how welcoming the environment feels for us. We just understand each other better.

Even something as simple as "It’s snowing at my house today" plays out differently. A sighted person might just post a photo, but a blind person will often add a few sentences of description—and those words make all the difference in truly feeling the moment.

I know I could probably post these things on the sites I mentioned earlier without being scolded, but talking about afternoon tea in a tech-heavy forum feels a bit "off-topic," doesn't it?

If you know of any interesting communities like this, please let me know.

Or, if such a place doesn't exist yet but people are interested in the idea, I'd be thrilled to see someone take it on. Honestly, I’ve even thought about building it myself, though my web development skills are still a work in progress.

Thanks in advance for any advice or recommendations!

But it comes with reddit relative accessibility problems, and as much as I too want to post there I somehow can't, don't know if it's about carma thing there or a specific condition I don't check with my 1 active account and 4 losts. I only seem able to reply in a thread there, not create a new one.

From my experience, I found Reddit to be quite good, but as you mentioned, blind people still have issues using some parts of the site.
Also, I felt it was a bit "over the top" for those using screen readers.

While it might be considered "mainstream social media," Reddit's r/blind subreddit includes a wide variety of general discussions about people's strategies and challenges living with blindness.

I too would highly recommend our/blind for a truly global blind community. Be forewarned, this is Reddit we are talking about. Wear a helmet.
As for how to navigate Reddit, may I suggest Dystopia for iOS? It is a very accessible application for Reddit, makes navigating Reddit much, much easier. Of course, you can always use the official Reddit application, and some on here prefer that. I prefer Dystopia however. Link below. Enjoy.

Technically it's a game, though most people nowadays use it as a chat client.

Check it out. Heads up, it only runs on windows and should you get some sort of error look in to installing the Visual c++ redistributables.

The r/Blind subreddit which many people have shared is OK, but it may not meet your requirements exactly. Discussions need to directly relate to blindness, so people can only mention, for example, parks and snowfall as they come up in other conversations. The subreddit also has a lot of fairly repetitive questions from sighted family members of people beginning to lose vision. Finally, most promotional posts aren't allowed.

Instead, I encourage you to join the OurBlind Discord server, which is moderated by the same team who moderates r/Blind. The rules are more relaxed, allowing discussions to flow much more naturally about a much broader range of subjects. There are even channels for topics unrelated to blindness.

There are at least three Mastodon instances for blind people: The Dragon's Cave, TweeseCake and Cane and Able Joining one Mastodon instance enables you to chat with people on any instance.

There are also quite a few Facebook groups for blind people. Some are dedicated to specific topics, but there are also some which are more general such as Blind PenPals and blind and vision impaired support group. Others are open to people from certain countries, such as a group for blind people in Australia. As with r/Blind, you may find that these groups focus too much on blindness and not enough on living as a blind person.

Thank you very much for your suggestion.
It seems we lack a space where blind people can discuss a wide range of topics.

You might like the Discord server I suggested. It's a very active text-based community where people discuss all kinds of things.
