Accessibility Comments

This app is quite accessible. It is similar to safari, only it can save and read web pages offline.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads all page elements.

Button Labeling

All buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

The app is fully accessible with VoiceOver and is easy to navigate and use.

Other Comments

I would highly recommend this app to voiceover users. It's a nice alternative to Safari, and the offline article reading makes it worth the price.

I believe Saphari already allows you do do this in iOS 5 with the reading list. After you open a page, double-tap on utilities at the bottom of the screen, and a popup will apear, with one of the optoins being "add to reading list." Hope this helps.
Yes, Safari does have a reading list, however, if you are using it with VoiceOver, you have to constantly interact with it. With Capti, not only will it continue playing after you lock the screen, Capti will read your playlist sequentially and you can control it like any music player: two-finger double tap pause-resume, you can use your headphones controls. You can control playback from the lock screen, etc. It's really convenient. Also, Capti uses Acapela voices, which, people say, sound better than VoiceOver.
Just like in Safari, you cannot close the page if you have only one tab opened. The "pages" button in the lower right corner will open the tab controls and you can work with multiple tabs, switch between them, close them. This is very similar to Safari.

The developer of this app is very willing to work with the blind community to improve VO access, although in my mind, this app is already as good, if not better, than Safari. I really like how easy it is to bookmark a page for later reading. What's new in Version 1.0.17 * Introduction of edit mode for playlist management * Significant VoiceOver compatibility improvements * Improvements in the responsiveness of the interface. Enjoy.
Thank you for using Capti, we are glad you are enjoying the application. Please feel free to contact us with suggested improvements or feature requests. New features and improvements are coming soon.

I think about the only improvement I'd like to see would be RSS integration. Would that be possible? So that you could cue up a list of articles and then have them read to you. This is certainly a great alternative to Safari with aditional features I like!

The ability to add feeds is on our TODO list, but I cannot promise it in the next release. While it's relatively easy to add RSS, we want to avoid introducing partial solutions. But we are definitely strong considering to have RSS or a similar solution.
Like Scott already mentioned the ability to integrate my RSS feeds or Feed Wrangler or another service would be huge. So far I am enjoying it, and first learned of this app thanks to the interview done by Serotek at one of the recent conferences.

can this app use ivona voices to read stuff? if yes,I am getting it right away! in my opinion ivona voices are the best for reading things no matter what.not so good they aren't when it comes to screenreaders,as speeding them up has adverse effect on their quality, but when it comes to reading stuff, they beat others hands down. voice dream reader was going to add those voices as well, but nothing has come of it so far. falcon wings.

Hi, I asked the Voice dream reader developer about the ivona voices recently, as when I heard that app was going to add them that was my main reason for buying it. The developer told me on twitter that he was willing to add them, but Ivona didn't seem to be willing for him to do so.
Capti does have the Ivona voices; I just purchased Salli yesterday. I really hope Ivona decides to work with the developer of Voice Dream.

By Kelly Sapergia on Sunday, November 24, 2013 - 02:23

I just got Capti, and am trying a couple voices for it: James from Neospeech (I wonder if Voice Dream Reader's going to get this one at some point), and Salli from Ivona. What I'm wondering is how long do you get to try the voices?

I have to note that, compared to Voice Dream, Capti Narrator is FREE. And, to answer the question, the free voice trial will last for 7 days. And while I cannot disclose the exact features that are already in testing, I can say that very soon you will not be needing Voice Dream any more...
Hi Eugene correct me if I am wrong but capti narrator isn't designed for reading books is it? I mean it can't read various file formats or do bookmarking etc. Also, please don't take this the wrong way, but your comment to me sounds a bit is snarky the right word? it feels a bit like your having a dig at voice dream, by saying capti narrator is free and you won't need to bother with Voice dream any more. I am of course always interested in new features that are added to apps, but I think efforts by any developer to improve accessibility should be applauded. I do await new features in capti narrator though with great interest, as I don't use voice dream reader because of the lack of ivona voices and also some of the gestures for interacting with it sounded a bit complicated last time I looked at them. Of course maybe I am being over sensitive about the last comment as of course things when read by a screen reader are obviously devoid of emotion, so maybe I am reading something into the comment which wasn't intended, if so then I apologise for jumping the gun.

Glad to see an update to this software. I look forward to trying it out with the new voices.

(From the App Store) What's New in Version 1.3 * View any web page as a list of article links * Add content from Clipboard, Google Drive, Dropbox * Synchronize your playlist with your other devices * Listen to files in PDF, DOC, PPT, RTF, EPUB, etc. * Open files in Capti from other apps * Enjoy more accurately extracted content * Enjoy higher performance of the app.

Note: As of yet, I have not been able to get dropbox to work properly. From the menu, I click on dropbox, then login. I get an alert that says that Capti Narrator would like access to all files and folders in the dropbox, along with a warning that it will be able to read and modify everything. I then see my dropbox username and a choose a different account link. I click allow and nothing happens. I have also tried clicking on my username in the warning message and am taken to the dropbox website where I log in and repeat the previous dialogue to no avail. However, a successful workaround is going into the dropbox app, clicking on a file, clicking share, open in, and choosing Capti.
what the subject means is, finally I'll be able to read books and such with ivona voices on my IOS device! awesomeness. Perhaps voice dream reader has many more features,no,not perhaps,it sure does. but the only feature I'd use would be for reading books and such when I didn't have access to my pc,and for that, kapti will do just fine. because it has one feature which VDR doesn't,and that is the ivona voices. This comment may come across as bashing or what you will towards VDR,but it isn't,or it is at least not intented to be so,all I mean through all this is, I am happy that I have a app to read books and such with my prefered voices. :d

By sockhopsinger on Friday, January 24, 2014 - 02:23

Regarding the previous comment concerning Ivona voices, I used to agree with that completely that Ivona had the best voices. For the most part, I stil do. However, if you want an American voice to read, in my opinion, there is absolutely none better than James from Neospeech. In fact, I don't think I've heard an Ameircan voice of any synthesizer that even comes close to it, not even Joey from Ivona. I still maintain, also, that Ivona Brian is the best overall reading voice. My question, now. Capti says it can be opened to read from other apps. Any ideas how?

Dear Tangela, I wanted to take the time to thank you for reporting the problem with Dropbox. The issue was fixed by January 5th when we revealed Capti at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
Dear Sockhopsinger, There are 3 ways that content can be imported from other apps: 1) In the email app, you can do a long press on any attached file and select to open it in Capti (if it supports that file type) 2) When you open a PDF and possibly other files in Safari, and wherever else this is available, you will have "Open In" button appear at the top of the file. 3) Finally, any text or a link can be manually imported via the clipboard

By Eugene on Thursday, April 24, 2014 - 02:23

IVONA voices are now only $4.99 (ÂŁ~3.00) in Capti Narrator. The app is, of course, free. Enjoy!

I haven't tried this version out yet, but it sounds really neat. Of note, Capti now claims support for Bookshare.

What's New in Version 1.7

You asked – we listened! Check out the awesome new features added in this version:
*Big news! You wanted to listen to your content on more devices – you can now use Capti in the Firefox browser on Windows and Mac computers (English only). Please visit www.captivoice.com in your Firefox browser, open the “Download” tab, and install the Capti Firefox add-on
* Now you can also add web pages to Capti from almost any browser – simply install the Capti Bookmarklet from the same “Download” tab at www.captivoice.com.

* We also added Bookshare – a resource with almost 300 thousand books and periodicals restricted to our users with print disabilities (please contact Bookshare to check if you qualify).
* You can now enjoy books in DAISY format!
* Our extensive collection of adult voices has been expanded with: Indian English (Raveena), Turkish (Filiz), Swedish (Astrid), Portugal Portuguese (Cristiano), and German (Julia).
* In addition to American English child voices (Ivy, Kenny, Nelly), we are happy to add new child voices speaking with British English accent (Harry and Rosie) and American English accent (Ella and Josh). Try them for free – your kids may enjoy listening to other kids reading to them!
* Finally, you can now share Capti tracks with your friends via AirDrop.
Stay in touch and keep sending requests for features and improvements to feedback@captivoice.com.

Here is an email I just sent to the app developer.

"Hello. I am pleased that you have added Bookshare support. However, I am having a problem with it. I logged in with my Bookshare account and went to search for Stephen King. When I did so, I got four results, even though I know that there are at least 60 books on Bookshare by Stephen King. I searched for "Stephen king", "Stephen King", and "King, Stephen" with the same four results showing up every time. Can you help me with that? Thanks for all of your work towards accessibility...Scott"

In reply to by sockhopsinger

Capti enables you to search in Bookshare by Title, Author, Full Text, or ISBN. If you start editing the search box, the selectors will appear right underneath the search box, the default one is "Title". When "Author" is selected, any of your three Stephen King related search keywords return the same 94 results. Hope this helps.

Hello. This app looks awesome and I really enjoyed the audio walkthrough accompanying this entry. I have a question about .pdf support. First off, I want to mention that I just created an account this morning with your support desk, but I'm in no way trying to gain the system by asking this. Has anyone here--besides the developer of this app of course--used the .pdf functionality and if so is it possible to navigate by character, word et cetera? I just downloaded a .pdf file this morning and am excited to get going with this app.

By Ekaj on Saturday, December 24, 2016 - 02:23

I'm back to politely ask if anybody's still using this app and if so, could somebody please please respond to me either here or privately regarding my last reply? Is the developer still around? I've contacted him too but he won't respond with instructions. I know this app is still being updated, because it did so last week on my system. I need to use this app for work, but I can't figure out how to load a pdf document into it. Eagerly awaiting any responses. This app seems pretty cool, and you can't beat the price of the free version! I cannot recommend it though until I've used it a bit.

By Justin on Saturday, December 24, 2016 - 02:23

Hey. If I remember this right, you have to share the PDF files with Capti, then they should automatically load into your playlist on your phone/iPad. If I don't have that right then post something cause I don't exactly remember what you have to do with PDFs as I just use Ibooks for them and it does what I need them to do.

What's New in Version 2.5

With this major update, you can now:
- Add photos and images to Playlist
(OCR is available to organizations only)
- Export your annotations from the tracks
- Change speech rate directly in Playlist
- Navigate text by bookmarks and time intervals
- Hear earcons when Capti cannot navigate

By Ekaj on Saturday, December 24, 2016 - 02:23

Thanks Justin. I'm actually trying to read and navigate a Wall Street Journal article that was sent to me by a colleague and is in .pdf format as well as some other pdf documents and things that I've encountered over the years. I tried reading this article using iBooks, but no dice. My brother actually tweeted a post to me that is from another blog and may be of some use. I'll admit I'm not that good yet at some of this advanced computer stuff. I suppose it doesn't help that there's nobody in my area who has been trained on VoiceOver. Well actually there's a high-school guy who lives about 25-30 minutes from me who uses VO, but I'm not sure I'd be able to get to him independently. I guess that's why sites like AppleVis exist though even with the occasional--or not so occasional--spelling mistakes, and I really appreciate that. But I digress. I'll try some of these other things and see what happens.

By Justin on Saturday, December 24, 2016 - 02:23

True, true. lol! I think your best bet with reading PDF files is to OCR them with an app like prismo. It seems to do a decent job of OCR.

By Ekaj on Friday, March 24, 2017 - 02:23

I think I'll try out that app then. But it seems rather odd to me that people are raving about Capti on here, and the developer was even actively engaged in this topic. Yet when I posted, he never responded and neither did anybody on here until later. I have attempted to contact them numerous times both via email and Twitter, but absolutely nothing has come of it. An update to the app was also installed on my system, so I'm about 99.9999% sure it is still being developed. I'm wondering again if anyone would care to look into this? I realize it's the holiday season, but you'd honestly think that people could do better.

What's New in Version 2.6

Usability is the most important aspect in any app. We have taken your suggestions to heart. An we’re introducing our brand new iOS interface!
With an engaging color scheme and more intuitive functionality, you will be able to use Capti with more confidence than ever before. You can now:
* Customize the order of tracks within each of your playlists
* Open the track’s content and tap anywhere to enter the full-screen mode
* Organizational account subscribers will also enjoy higher quality OCR
and be able to upload tracks from physical worksheets and textbooks
...More

By Ana Jacob on Monday, April 24, 2017 - 02:23

This app has so much potential, but I'm having a few hangups with it.

First, when browsing Bookshare, there doesn't seem to be a way to get more book info before downloading? Double tapping a title downloads it, but what if you want to read the synopsis before grabbing it?

Also, when reading a book, the "previous" and "next" buttons say null, which means they can't be used. I can choose the navigation unit, paragraph, sentence, etc, but it won't let me move forward or back.

Lastly, is there no way to use the Alex iOS voice in this app? I see a few other iOS voices, but not good ole Alex.

As I understand it, you should be able to sync your reading position across multiple devices using Capti Narrator, and that's a major plus for me. Sadly, these downsides are keeping me from switching to this app as my primary reading method.

If anyone has workarounds I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

By Ekaj on Monday, April 24, 2017 - 02:23

There seems to be a discrepancy with this app, because I haven't gotten it to work quite right either on my MacBook Air. I think this app entry needs to either be removed altogether, or some sort of clarification needs to be made regarding the app's usability.

I've played with the Mac version as well, and honestly it seems to be even harder to use.

I got a follow up email from the developer after I created a Capti account. They seem to be pretty customer friendly, so maybe I'll send them an email and see what the latest is on the accessibility front.
