Return Key/Dot 8 Not Working with VO

iOS and iPadOS

I have two students who use a combination of an iPad with a QWERTY keyboard and Chameleon braille display (with iOS 26.2.1). When VoiceOver is enabled on one of the iPads, the return key nor dot 8 on the braille display start a new line or otherwise work for pressing enter (it just gives a ding). When VoiceOver is off, enter on the QWERTY keyboard and on the on-screen keyboard works normally. On the second iPad with the same accessories, the return problem is only intermittent and launches a "paste" menu. I have tried many basic troubleshooting strategies (restart, restart of accessories, double-checking settings, etc.). I am totally perplexed that identical equipment on the same version of iOS is having different but similar problems. I'm also confused as to how it can be an intermittent issue on one of them and a constant issue on the other.

Have you tried the following: a reset braille profile, followed by reset of user settings, followed by a factory reset, followed by turning wifi and bluetooth off, followed by turning airplane mode off, followed by where it says, "Please wi-fi service stopped try again" then holding down the power button for 20 seconds, then holding down the power button to turn it on, followed by connecting it to wiFi, then pairing it to the IPhone, turning off the IPad, then turning it back on? I have been hearing about certain braille displays having wifi issues. Utah state for the blind said they were working on a new version for the NLS E-reader ebh5008665 but they are angry that it wasn't fixed. They are also angry about communications between translations and confusing translations between Liblouis andUEB grade 2 contracted. Have you tried changing braille translation? Apple assumes that people have spare phones and such where this miscommunication happens and even with these recorded logs, this issue could be difficult

Thanks for that input @chicken joe. I definitely haven't done that exact sequence. I have considered a factor reset, since people aren't complaining of this being a widespread issue. One thing that perplexes me is that it does it with the Bluetooth keyboard, too, so theoretically that shouldn't be impacted by any braille settings.

I can say from experience that I've had this issue before. You would think you're about to press the enter key to send that message, to start a new line in a document, or whatever, and then... paste, menu item. Factory resets wouldn't help. Software updates sometimes fixed the issue, but it felt like putting a band-aid on a bullet wound. It was like you were making a gamble, "Is VoiceOver gonna work today? Or is it going to be a pain in my butt." More times than not, it would be a pain in the butt. However, if I remember correctly, because I haven't used an iOS device in almost three months, and even before that, I stopped using braille extensively, so I think I would get around it by doing option plus enter. I would hit space+dots 2 and 7 and then I would hit enter. that would bypass the issue. but for iMessage, that may not work, as that isn't a multi line text field. Hope my comment helps in some way.
