Gemini Pro is incredible

So I just wanted to share this here.
I just redeemed the 1-year free student discount for Gemini. I’ve got 2 TB of storage shared across all Google services and have been tinkering with the Gemini integration in Gmail and Drive.
Oh my gosh, Apple, you really screwed this up. You could’ve just marketed Macs — already super popular with Apple Silicon — to handle all this privately on-device: cross-referencing iCloud Drive files, Mail, Messages, and everything else. Macs already had the hardware, at least better hardware than iphones, to do this stuff locally.
Google’s doing it all online at the cost of privacy. It can go back into Drive files and emails, and it actually pointed out something really important I needed to reply to that I wouldn’t have noticed otherwise, so there is a real usefulness here.
All my important data lives in iCloud Drive, and iCloud Mail is my main inbox for anything important - banks, government stuff, etc.
Honestly, I’d have already moved everything to Google if it wasn’t for that one-year free student deal.
But now you'll be using gemini for siri so... The integration better works.

Now you just need a shiny new ChromeBook and a Pixel Pro, and you will be golden. 😇

I'll wait for this new kid with android kernel and a chrome os like flavor of android desktop.
Pixel... Yeah but I've heard horrible stories of weird software battery issues and just other stuff that is so, google.

I've read a lot of rumors about those devices as well. However, I have friends who are married, whom have a Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 8 Pro respectively, and they seem to love their devices. Granted, they are both cited and do not need talkback or any other TTS, Although, she, does use magnification, while, he, does not need to. 🤷🏻‍♂️

If google Gemini Pro has impressed you, imagine what Google Gemini could do on a Google Pixel!
everything you hear is just rumors,
I can assure you that there's no phone as smart as the Google Pixel!
The iPhone is just a dumb phone compare to the Pixel.

Hi. What are the main benefits of upgrading to Pro? Are Drive and Gmail integrations specific to Pro? What about the live video features? I could look this up, and I will as soon as I finish this paragraph, but I usually just get marketing nonsense when I try researching AI assistants, so I'd love a user's perspective.

Glad to hear they've finally decided to reach out. It was getting a bit silly.

My views on Apple's approach have changed. I did think they were foolish for holding off but, the longer time goes on, I realise they may have been right, looking for the useful aspect of LLMs and large scale machine learning. I've cancelled my Chat GPT account several times, going back like a chump when they bring something shiny out, but it's either not as good—many hard core fans on reddit say so—or my expectations have change. Even wehn when proofing or editing emails for me it is coming back with sub standard waffle.

We're in the age of AI slop. I've found google searches to be more productive.

I'd like a more responsive and adaptable Siri, I'd also like wider understanding of context between devices which, lets face it, Apple is going to nail. I'm not bothered about making videos, having it write crap that never feels quite right.

I'm glad we've had this passage though. I think the world of authenticity has been highlighted as somewhere far better to play.

In all honesty, hearing that Apple will partner with, Google, of all companies, to launch this next generation Siri is not something I'm happy about. I try to avoid using Google products whenever possible, and that includes any AI they create. If this does go through, I might just turn Apple Intelligence off entirely.

Would you have preferred Open AI or Anthropic? Something else?

I'm sure Apple will spin up their own AI at some point, they've got a lot of very interesting work going on in the background; it's just a little behind the times in term of roll out, if not potential.

I mean, Google pays Apple a bunch of money for Apple to have Google be it's #1 search engine. So, why not continue the trend with Apple Paying Google to have Gemini be it's #1 artificial intelligence?

By Gar on Wednesday, November 12, 2025 - 10:14

Frankly, I'm not okay with that either. I understand Apple is a business. But allowing Google to slip themselves in like that, to me, undermines the privacy commitment Apple touts.
As for what AI I'd rather they use? Frankly? I don't care. At this point, most of them have a better reputation than Google could ever dream of. Though I tend to gravitate towards open source projects so...

First, from what I've read, Google Gemini will be running on Apple servers so that Google won't be able to pull any data about you from that. This is in keeping with apple's focus on privacy.

Secondly, I'm guessing that this is mostly a transition move to enable Apple to provide some decent AI capability while they are still working on developing their own AI tools. The effort within Apple to develop their own tools has obviously fallen way behind and they had to do something in the meantime. So I'm happy they are making this move.
