Accessibility Comments

This latest version of the app (v2.2) has come such a long way in accessibility. This review was written with the current update as of March 23, 2012.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads all page elements.

Button Labeling

All buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

The app is fully accessible with VoiceOver and is easy to navigate and use.

Other Comments

The most recent version of the Starbucks app was found to be completely inaccessible. However, due to some advocacy and contact on behalf of Voiceover users with the Starbucks company, Starbucks released an accessible version to their app in just over a month's time from the beginning of the initial diologue. Wonderful!

Dear Janit, Thank you for taking the time last march to submit your thoughts regarding the official Starbucks App and its accessibility relative to VoiceOver. Unfortunately, I have just found that the most current version available in the app store is completely inaccessible. I have sent a letter to Starbucks and I'll copy the text below. Thanks again, Chris Hello, I am writing to comment specifically on the accessibility of your official Starbucks app for the iPhone. Recently, I had the idea of downloading the Starbucks app on to my iPhone so I could more easily manage my Starbucks card. I am blind and I use Apple’s program for people who are blind and visually impaired called VoiceOver. I was honestly stunned when I clicked on the app and found that it is completely unusable under VoiceOver. VoiceOver is shipped with every Apple product using I believe iOS 4 or later. I should state at this point that I did do a little research and found that as of last march, Version 1.5.2 was reasonably accessible, despite a few problems. The app currently available in the app store (Version 2.1.2 posted on December 19, 2011) is not accessible at all. Starbucks has done a lot of great things for people who are disabled. I’ve read numerous news articles highlighting blind people working at various Starbucks locations across the country. Recently, Starbucks sold a line of gift cards with the word “Starbucks” presented in perfectly legible Braille. This really made a positive impact on a lot of blind individuals and sighted people alike. I would like to encourage Starbucks to take the next step. Do the research, allocate the appropriate resources, and make the Starbucks App accessible and useable by your blind and visually impaired customers. I recently read an article which stated that over 47 percent of cell phone users in America use Smart Phones. I know from personal experience that far more than 47 percent of blind people use iPhones because of their inherent accessibility and usability. And I certainly know a lot of blind people who love Starbucks and would love it more if they could access the company via the app. To learn how blind people interact with VoiceOver, check out the following link: www.apple.com/accessibility/iphone/vision.html. Also, Apple has provided a guide for developers on how to make their applications accessible at http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/iPhoneAccessibility/Introducti... Additional information for developing apps that are accessible to VoiceOver users can be found at www.applevis.com/information-app-developers I look forward to communicating with Starbucks representatives so that we can work together to make Starbucks the most open and friendly experience it can be, whether at the coffee shop or on line. Thanks very much, Chris Foster

I AGree! The person who wrote the email had actually read it as opposed to just churning out a form. I'm Hopeful. I also took a copy of my initial comments to the mamanager at my local Starbucks location and he is doing what he can with it as well. AppleViss is such a great cite! Thanks for all you do!
Thanks Chris fortaking the initiative to contact Starbucks. I haven't used the app in a while and was very disappointed to learn that it is no longer accessible. It sounds like Starbucks is taking your letter very seriously. Hopefully they will fix the app.

I don't know where I should write this, but after losing my gold card status because I couldn't use my phone to reload my account or use my phone to make purchases, I wrote to complain. I not only got my gold card membership reinstated, but I was told that they hope to have a VoiceOver compadible update available sometime in March. I've already been such a thorn in their side, if they aren't fixing it for the rest of the visually impared community, they're doing it to get rid of me.

Today Starbucks released an update to their app. I haven't had the chance to go through every aspect of the app, but it's very easy to choose foods and drinks. Once an item is selected, the nutrition information is clearly displayed and the item can be customized and saved. It's great when an app developer responds to users who are visually impaired.

Starbucks did a nice job with the update. So far, I have found one thing that is still inaccessible. It is not possible to transfer balances between cards. The icon that you need to drag is not visible to VoiceOver. I was able to reload a card using my PayPal account. On the hole, a nice job by Starbucks.
