Home screen always reorients to portrait.

Hi all.

In order to get the screen to reorient to landscape, I have to be in an app. If I go back to the home screen, it always reorients to portrait, and the orientation doesn't change if I put the phone in landscape on the home screen. It also won't initially reorient if I put it in landscape. Yes, orientation lock is off, I checked that first thing.

If anybody has any ideas, I'd appreciate it. Normally this behavior wouldn't bother me, I'm mostly in portrait and I'm not really a fan of landscape. But a few things use it, Garage Band, braille screen input, so I'd like to be able to reorient as necessary. If I want it locked, I can always turn the lock on.

I should add this is on an iPhone XR running the latest version of iOS 18, in case that matters. I thought maybe it was the phone getting old, but it reorients pretty quickly in something like Mail or Garage Band.

Subject is pretty accurate. This happened a bit with my iPhone 7, and it's also happening on my iPhone 14. My brother fixed it over the holidays last year when he was in town. It stayed in Portrait mode for awhile, but then started switching again. I'm wondering if things are getting thrown off track with all this AI stuff that is coming into play? I managed to pair my iPhone with my HumanWare eReader, and just today found the setting for locking/unlocking the orientation. I'm going to play around with it as well as the other Braille settings. In addition, I find that if I have my phone on a flat surface such as my desk this doesn't happen as much if at all.

i think home beeing in portrait is by design. I.e, if you have orientation lock turned on but say you go into an app that is landscape, the phone will autoswitch to landscape, even if you have autolock on. I could be wrong, but I think this was by design.
