Grim Omens - Old School RPG

Category

Description of App

Set in a realm of eternal night, Grim Omens puts the player in the shoes of a fledgling vampire, a creature of blood and darkness struggling to maintain the grip on their fading humanity in a mysterious and hostile world. The game combines classic dungeon crawling elements, familiar turn-based combat mechanics, and various tabletop and board game influences to create an immersive and accessible old-school RPG experience. The 3rd entry in the Grim series, Grim Omens, is a standalone sequel to Grim Quest. It refines the established formula of Grim Quest and Grim Tides, all the while offering an intricate story and detailed lore that ties in with previous games in strange and unexpected ways. Even so, you can play it with not experience in previous Grim games, without fear of missing out on the story details. Inspired by tabletop RPG classics such as Vampire (The Masquerade, The Dark Ages, Bloodlines) and Dungeons and Dragons' Ravenloft (Curse of Strahd).

Accessibility Comments

This is the most accessible game by this dev yet! It's very compatible with voiceover and definitely playable. Each dungeon tile and attack zone of an enemy is labeled! However, there are still some accessibility issues that you should bare in mind: * The invitory images when you select an item to feed to your familiar are not labeled, however the confirmation button will tell you what the name of the item is, so you can avoid feeding them the wrong thing that way. * Like previous games, bestiary notes and skill/spell descriptions don't have headings however you can use the roter in line mode to relatively quickly get to the info you need. * Skills that you have to double tap to use require deactivating voiceover.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads most page elements.

Button Labeling

Most buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

There are some minor accessibility issues with this app, but they are easy to deal with.

Other Comments

I'm having a lot of fun with this game and I hope you will check it out.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think that there’s no way to view the report of each turn in the battle. Therefore there’s no way for the user to know what the enemy did in each turn. what abilities it used, the damage, who attacked who etc.

You are referring to what is called aβ€”"Combat Log". And yes, that would be quite handy to have. :-)

By Zoe Victoria on Saturday, August 30, 2025 - 20:33

No, currently there isn't a combat log. And while that would indeed be handy to have, I don't really have a problem playing without it. I just listen to the sound effects and read the entries for enemies to know what abilities they have, and play it from there. Though I understand how not everyone is abel or willing to play that way.

At the risk of going slightly off topic, the PC versions of Both Grim Quest and Grim Tids both have combat logs. The mobile versions don't. I have no idea why this is. I've always played by checking the enemies and their abilities and working with what I knew based on the sound effects? I posted a request on their discord a while back asking for combat logs, among other things, in the mobile version. I never received a response, which probably means that the developre doesn't consider this a high priority or else some limitation of the programming language is to blame. Either way, I wouldn't let the lack of combat logs stop you from enjoying the game.

I’ll do it your way guys then.

The only place for me to store items, is in my inventory. however, since I can buy space to stash items, I figure that I am missing the way to transfer items from my inventory to my stash. if anyone can help me with this I would be very grateful.

To access the stash, you must go to the Hanged Man Inn. Once in there, double tap on where it says 'Your Abode.' That is how you access your inventory stash.

hey guys. this game is almost perfect, but the issue is at those melee skills that requires you to double tap the enemy to perform. I had to toggle voice over on and off to do it, and it is not so convenient. tried writing about this issue on the discord server, but no fix for voice over so far. if you are playing with spells mostly though, you will have no problem with the game.

Thanks a lot for your answer and for posting this game!

By Zoe Victoria on Tuesday, September 2, 2025 - 13:33

That's a shame. I was really hoping they'd have fixed that. It's an issue with the other Grim games as well. I play with spells mostly at the moment so I hadn't noticed until now.
