Using Facebook on Mac.

So after about six months of doing nothing whatsoever with it, I decided to check back in on Facebook to see if there was any reason I particularly need an account there. In Firefox on Mac, it reads something like this.

"name of group) group, facebook, facebook, facebook, facebook, facebook, facebook ...you get the idea. Then it tends to spell out images, have a bunch of stuff about reels, and so on. I haven't gotten to anybody who's actually written text in a post to see if it spells that out too.

What's the secret I'm missing? Because right now FB is unusable nonsense. I mean I have some friends on there where it's the main way I see what they're up to, but I'm not slogging through gibberish like that on the off chance something interesting is going on.

same here, and no workaround. I have reported this to Apple.

Hey! So, Iā€™m having the same issue. Honestly, Iā€™ve always thought Facebook was kind of useless, and I genuinely donā€™t know why I havenā€™t hit the delete button yetā€”though Iā€™m this close to doing it in the next few days. But, like you, itā€™s where I check in on my friendsā€™ lives, so I thought, ā€œEh, maybe itā€™s worth keeping.ā€ Spoiler: itā€™s not. Facebook just feels like a big pile of nonsense at this point.

Anyway, same struggle hereā€”I use Firefox on my Mac, and I have no clue how to fix it. Meta loves to mess up accessibility, like theyā€™re trying to set a new record or something. The iPhone app isnā€™t awful , but itā€™s definitely not as easy to use as it used to be. And trying to use Facebook on Firefox? Total chaos. Honestly, your description nailed itā€”thereā€™s no topping that.

Iā€™ll give Safari and Chrome a shot, but letā€™s be real: Iā€™ll probably just delete my account and be done with it.

P.S. If you somehow figure out why Facebook is worth keeping, let me know. Maybe youā€™ve got some magical insight I donā€™t! šŸ˜‰

On Windows, the mobile site worked, but regular Facebook in Firefox would do something totally different, but equally annoying. It would spell out things like dates and posts, before you got to actual readable text. So you'd get things like:

"M
o
n
d
a
y

J
a
n
u
a
r
y"

and so on. As for keeping it, if you use Messenger, you can apparently set up a thing they call a DEMA, Deactivated Except for Messenger Account. As for FB more generally, I used to just go on it and rant about terrible books I accidentally read, the weird music I listen to and the weird musical topics I was interested in, and how I'd yell at scammers about the Great Old Ones or, one time, that I'd been bitten in half by a hippo. So I mean, I'm probably not the best person to ask.

As the subject suggests, would either of the Mobile options work? I am not a Facebook user, or a social media user in general, so asking honestly here.
Sidenote, how does one, "accidentally", read a book? šŸ¤Ø

Yeah, I think thatā€™s definitely a Facebook issue. Sometimes they really mess up the apps and websites. For whatever reason, the mobile version of Facebook seems betterā€”maybe because itā€™s lighter? Honestly, I have no idea what Iā€™m talking about. But yeah, I really think itā€™s just a Facebook problem.

As for keeping it, I wonā€™t. I donā€™t use Messenger, just Facebook, you know, like I said, to stay in touch with some friends. But I think I can get used to WhatsAppā€”itā€™s not that bad. Honestly, I donā€™t even have a good reason to keep using Facebook. I tried logging in on Safari on my iPhone, and like you said, the mobile site isnā€™t terrible. I mean, itā€™s not good, but itā€™s less bad.

Itā€™s just messy, you know? Itā€™d be so much easier if they were consistent and gave us the same experience everywhere. The mobile app is better so why canā€™t the web version be just as good? Anyway, like you said, itā€™s a mess. Good luck with itā€”I hope you find a way to make it work! šŸ˜‰

Don't even get me started on 'Margaret' Zuckerberg. šŸ™„

By Sara on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 - 09:02

Yep! If I started talking about Margaret I wouldnā€™t have much good to say, and Iā€™d probably just end up being annoying. So yeah, letā€™s not go thereā€”heā€™s the problem, no doubt. By the way, that name is so creative! I might just borrow it next time I need to refer to Mark Zuckerberg. šŸ˜‰

One accidentally reads a *bad* book. You start a book, and it looks promising. You don't find out it's truly terrible until at least halfway through, and by that point, you may be morbidly curious about how it turns out.

I can't share the review of the last one here, because there is *way* too much cursing. But let's just say the Catholic teen who said "God, if I'm doing something wrong, please make me hit a deer" didn't show up until quite a ways into the book. But good holy gods, once she showed up, we got prayers for deer on vehicle action a *lot*!

Suffice to say, the book and the whole plot turned out to be as dumb as the above sounds. But for a while, it had some promise. I wouldn't say it was all that great of a promise, but it could have been something way better than it actually ended up being, and I am sad that I read it. I want the author to compensate me.

Instagram dms have never been accessible on both mac and windows and the pages are as unstructured as those of facebook. Try to change the grouping behaviour under navigation with all four options would be my best bet.
