I am sure this is totally related to the YouTube application on IOS but wanted to confirm from fellow members of applevis before I raise the flag with Google accessibility, which as for now according to me are sleeping over many accessibility bugs with their applications.
On the YouTube app. when I go to add a comment, I usually dictate my comment and dictation as we know it messes up what I have said. So I need to make edits. I change the rotar to navigate using words OR characters depending on the situation but when editing I find that the focus of the cursor to type is not in the position I expected it to be in. Say the sentence was: The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
Now I want to be before the word lazy, so use word navigation to get to the word, character navigation to position myself befor the word lazy and then start typing; but VO types over something else or elsewhere in the sentence, mostly after the last word in the sentence.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Comments
No but report it anyway.
Google is very lazy when it comes to this stuff, they've broken the buttons under each video on the website, I should actually get onto them about that with BeMyEyes.
RE: Brad
Thank you for your reply, I honestly liked the previous way you could interact with comments i.e. swipe up/ down to like, dislike, reply or expand comment thread. I really don't understand the need for the change in the buttons now provided, it takes forever to read through the comments on the application. Just to get to the next comment you need to swipe through 3 buttons, what a time waster
re:Mister Kayne
Oh I completely agree.
I think they want the app to look the same on IOS as it does on android, it's annoying I know.
I doubt anything will be done though so i'd advise reading the comments on the website.
It's frustrating but if we want to use youtube; we have to put up with their crappy design.
I phoned google support through BeMyEyes and mentioned how their buttons were labled oddly, they're going to look into it, it does frustrate me that these accessibility experts don't have a windows machine a mac machine and a google chrombook, but according to the person; they do have an NVDA expert who they will be contacting or something like that, it's a bit confusing.
The expert said that it's probably a bug with NVDA, I told him it wasn't instead it was that google had labeled the buttons oddly.
It's being looked into now but I really don't like how these experts basically know nothing when it comes to the basics of HTML and how screen readers work.
I expect experts to ya no, be experts.
NVDA Expert - HAHAHA!
I am a NVDA expert but if the website or application is not an NVDA expert there is not much I can do. Some idiots are going far beyond to claim their applications to be called accessible by putting a voice search button. What if I cannot see and can't talk? Did that ever cross their so called intelligent non-disabled brains? Oops, they would ask me to use Braille then, if they know something like that exists
Yet another reason
I use a third-party YouTube app on my iPhone.
RE:: Brian
I am not pro using 3rd party applications, the Youtube application works fine on my device, it's just a few things here and there I wish they would improve
Fair enough
Do keep in mind though, that you are complaining about service and/or functionality, that can easily be fixed by using a third-party application and/or service. However I will respect your wish to use only "official" applications.
My suggestion was just that, a suggestion.
Nothing more. 🤷🏽♂️
Adding and editing Youtube comments
I have experienced the same weird voiceover behavior when trying to edit a comment on Youtube. If I try to go backward or forward through the text field, the insertion point doesn't follow as it should. I have found that if I type a space or another character, then I can use the rotor to navigate by word or character again as usual. That's not really a solution but it seems to help get the focus back to the right place again. I also agree that navigating through comments has gotten very tedious lately, and it was much easier before. I plan to contact Google on these issues.
RE: Joyfuljules
Thank you for letting me know that I am not the only one who is facing such an issue with editing comments on Youtube and also the frustrating experience in reading through comments. If you get a ticket number for this issue when you report please let me know. You can email their disability support team here: https://support.google.com/accessibility/contact/contact_google_disability?sjid=16675218946319069843-AP
Re: Mister Kayne
Thank you for the link to send feedback to Google. I tried multiple times but I wasn't able to send my feedback using the form. it kept saying there was an error, and I couldn't figure out what the problem was. I ended up contacting Youtube support through the Youtube app. I sent them my request yesterday and haven't heard back yet. I'll update this thread if I hear anything.
unhelpfull, but it works fine here
the subject
RE: Joyfuljules
Yes, you are right I had the same problem when sending my report to them on that site, were you using Google Chrome browser? If yes, use FireFox, it should go through. Just in case it does not, here is a mail ID to write to them directly: disability-support@google.com
That email address doesn't work.
It's out of order.
I've tried contacting google using the support form, youtubes buttons are still labeled odddly, but get an error saying please try to reformat.
I have no idea what's going on there.
I'm probably going to contact BeMyEyes again tomorrow.
I'm not a huge fan of their google support but I'll give it one more shot.
My Experience with this Bug
First of all I will say it does (or at least certainly has) existed. I'll focus the VO cursor on the comment box then try and move the insertion point with the rotor and the insertion point doesn't move (as evidenced by the lack of the tick sound that should play when moving the insertion point). The solution for me has been to make sure to focus the VO cursor on some part of the keyboard (E.G. the return key) and then navigate through the text with the rotor from there.
One other way to move the insertion point that's equally accessible is to tap and hold the space bar, then drag your finger around to move the point directly. VO will tell you what you're moving over; the faster you move your finger, the more it will announce at once. Certainly I think this is the most effective way of moving through large paragraphs of text.
RE: Brad/ Minionslayer
Brad, that mail works. I was not able to raise my issue on their disability help website. So I decided to take a chance and mail them at that mail ID. I got a response.
Minionslayer, this is just too cumbersome for something so simple but thank you for the work around. I guess work arounds are all we are left to explore as users of assistive technology. They really need to employ user testers in more numbers for the products they have. This would take care of employment opportunities and reduce the burden on the support team to investigate each issue
@Mister Kayne well it doesn't anymore.
I got an email saying the inbox is no longer monitored.
