my PC does not have a microphone built-in. I would like to start using copilot, but it seems to want me to talk to it. I discovered that there are several microphone apps. Which one would work best for use with copilot?

By downloading a microphone app, that’s not gonna give you a microphone on your computer. You either need to purchase a headset with a mic, get a USB mic, or talk with copilot using your android or iPhone.

Buy a webcam, which can double up as a microphone too.

You can grab yourself a pretty decent microphone for about $30. Fifine has a pretty good lineup when it comes to basic mics; I got mine for around that price and people think it's a lot more expensive than it truly is. To prevent advertising I won't go into major details, but you can search online.
Another solution is using an app called WoMic (installed on both the device and your Windows computer), which will essentially turn your mobile device into a microphone. However, the drawbacks are the latency, and you need to upgrade to a subscription for better audio quality and what have you. WoMic also requires connectivity via WiFi or Bluetooth (can't remember if it's either or, or one of them) to operate.
And as others said, webcams are another good option. You could also get a headset with a simple microphone, but keep in mind that they can usually become quite pricy, especially if you are looking for headsets that sound good.

You can just type to it.

Keep in mind, the talking version of coPilot can't go on the internet yet, I'm not sure if it will, so if that's something you need, the non talking version can do that.

If you can; i'd recommend buying a laptop as it will have a mic built in.

Unless you need the horsepower that only a desktop machine could provide, a laptop is absolutely the way to go. 😎✌️
