The two step nightmare

iOS and iPadOS

last Thursday, I was trying to clear an old device from my iCloud account. I thought I was focused on that device, hit the button, and it wiped out my current phone. After howling and pounding on the desk for a while, I tried to restart my phone. Of course, it wanted to send me verification codes using the phone number for my phone. but… That number was not accessible. Also, the method of getting a verification code from the settings was not accessible either. and, I did not have another Apple device, which could receive a code. I finally found something that said that I could reassign the phone number to a different number, but that it would take several days for that to happen. I ran over to my neighbor‘s house and asked if I could use her phone number. She was very nice and let me do it. Finally, after three days, Apple sent me an email saying that that phone number was available. Then, I did something else, and had to do a hard reset on the phone, which erased all of my settings and put it back to factory specifications. That was another bit of nightmare, because it took away access to my carrier and my SIM card. Thankfully, after visiting my carriers store today, everything is back to working order. I am so glad to be waking up from that nightmare. I did discover that Apple will let you assign more than one phone number as a trusted number. It was. under the manage account feature on the website account.apple.com. That feature is not available in settings on the phone. You need to actually go online to find it. At least, now I am somewhat prepared if I do something dumb again. why doesn’t Apple let you use your email address to get a code? I would think that would be just as safe as sending it to the phone.

Hello. First of all, I'm so glad that your phone is back in working order. My late sister had a similar problem on her Mac last year where she inadvertently locked herself out. But that was remedied pretty quickly. I do have a related question for anyone who has linked the health app and the native journal app. I did this over the weekend and wrote something, but have yet to see it in Journal. That isn't the issue I'm having. The issue I'm having is that somehow various health activities are now showing up. I think that's because I linked these 2 apps. Long story short, I am being asked whether I want to keep or delete health data from my first iPhone. I deleted one thing, and it seems to have vanished for good. But both iPhones are still listed within the settings for Journal. This despite the fact that I removed the other iPhone from my iCloud account. When I get time I'll have another look at this, but has anyone else experienced it? Perhaps the physical presence of the other phone has something to do with it. These phones are amazing, but a bit daunting at times even for the experienced user, lol.

Hello Honest: So glad your mess is finally streightened out. Reading your note makes me glad I let the Verizon store help me with my iPhone 16 upgrade.

Sorry that happened to you. Two things you can do to help guard against a disaster like this are in iOS under Settings, "Your Name", sign-in & security. Then under the "recovery methods" you can add a recovery contact and you can also get a recovery key. Both of those would let you get into your account in a dire situation like the one you had happen to you.

first, what a clever name you chose. Second, I had no idea those settings were available. Wish someone had told me a long time ago.

Thanks honest nan! It's the name of the first app I ever made. I posted so much from that account it stuck with me. :-)
