Other Comments

On Friday, was not there physically, but had Vista Center staff demoing and is an app that I found out about before and have been using for a bit already. It's an app that can let you know about available objects or text, scan for specific text or objects, and even add personal objects to locate. It provides great feedback of when it sees the text or object and gives you feedback of when you're getting closer and can reach the item.

I don’t understand. What is an OORION venue? What’s the difference between this And something like seeing ai or Be my eyes or other apps for the blind.

This seems more like that rather than BeMyEyes kind of thing.

This is different and unique, as Oorion will not only identify visible text and objects, it can search for specific objects and text, allowing one to hone in on the object. It's also possible to scan and find personal objects.
Give it a try and you may be delightfully surprised.

The description part of the app directory entry should have the "appstore" description and not your personal thoughts. There is another section for that. Please update this.

As I said and will continue saying, this is a normal occurrance. Not only in apps, but also in hardware. We have had occurrances like this for ages now. Perhaps one is better than the other, but it is still there for those who would prefer to use it instead. Just like opening a pantry, pick which one you want, and eat it. In this case, use it. Don't eat your apps. :P

Well we have so many apps for us in our toolbox however, this one is very unique in the fact that it can hone on something in a room and navigate me directly to it such as a misplaced white cane or my AirPods case cause it happens to us so I just pull out my iphone, make sure there's sufficient lighting in the room and move the phone camera around and it will pick up the object, tell me how far it is away, make noise when I'm getting closer to it and also speak the distance and once I get closer to it I'll let me know and it also tells me what is around the object so there are some AI integration and scene description. I use this app when needed. When I'm traveling alone, this app will definitely be handy.

I heard an interview about this app on the RNIB tech talk podcast, episode 538. Unfortunately the app store description doesn't do it justice. It doesn't make it clear that you can identify objects or text wherever you are, and you don't need to be at a partner location. I've written to the OOrion team about this, because I think if the app description were clearer more people would download it. I saw this a couple of weeks ago, but I didn't download it because I thought it would only work in partner locations. I tried the generative AI setting which you have to be online for since it's using open AI, and it got all the objects right. However I just tried turning off the generative AI setting, and it said there's a toothbrush here when I'm nowhere near a toothbrush because I'm sat at my computer! Still a good app when the generative AI setting is turned on.

What is this app for exactly? Is it an item identifier, does it help you get around events, is it region specific?
I am Brian's confusion… 😕

Hi Brian,
Here is what this app can do: search object (tell it something you've lost like keys or book, and it'll find it for you), search text (tell it some text you want to search for and it'll find it), nearby objects (if you move your phone's camera around, it'll tell you everything that it can find), nearby text (move your phone's camera around, and it'll tell you all the text it can find), personal objects (use your phone's camera to scan an object, label it, and then you can search for it later if you need it). Check out episode 538 of the RNIB Tech Talk podcast about 50 minutes in towards the end, and there's an interview with someone from OOrion. She talks about the partner stuff, at the moment it's only a French chain of supermarkets since OOrion is a French developer. This app is in English so don't worry! I don't know what you can do when you're at said supermarket chain, get it to help you find stuff I imagine. I'm not interested in using my phone for this sort of thing when I'm out anyway, I'd rather wear a pair of glasses when I'm out. I'm in the UK, and I managed to download this. I can't remember if the lady from the company said there were any region restrictions or not.

I'll have to download this and give it a try. It sounds like an incredibly useful app. Also, I agree that it has a horrible description. Lol
