ios 18.0 on iphone 11

iOS and iPadOS

hi to you all again,
i have just updated to ios 18 on my ipad and iphone.
i am using voiceover.
the voice i have selected is siri voice one (u.s.), even though i am in ireland.
i find it the clearest of all the voices.
anyway, it gets itself into a total mess, in so far as it sort of crashes, and all that comes out of the phone is complete static, like a bad
radio station.
however, there is no voice.
i did ring apple accessibility and apple support and took the following steps.

force rebooted the phone, no result.
completely wiped the phone using itunes on a windows pc and set it up as a completely new phone.
still the same problem.

for the moment, i have changed the voice i am using, and so far it seems to be working.
however, i have only done this in the last hour or so, so i can't say whether or not it will last.
i have also noticed a huge battery drain since i updated, but i am not sure if this is relevant.

comments please?

regards,
patrick

Quite often, people have reported the same issue. If you want to avoid future crashes, stick to any other TTS.

Hi there,

The battery thing should resolve itself over the course of a few days to a week, depending on the integrity and condition of the battery. As for VO voices, well quite a few people have had the static issue, especially on older model iPhones. Just use a non Siri voice and you should be good.

Might also do your battery some good using a lower quality voice.

HTH. 🙂

hi justin and brian.
sorry justin, but what is a TTS please?
brian, i have tried leaving it for a while when i first updated, and the battery thing was still a problem.
even after a full restore, the same thing happens.
the battery health is 96% according to battery health on the phone.
i noticed, for example, that i lost 4% last night when the phone was supposed to be doing nothing.

thanks,
patrick

Hello Patrick. Tts stands for text to speech. I understand you have already reset the phone. I suggest deleting and reinstalling the voice. If that doesn't help, I hope you find something acceptable.

hi derek,
i have tried deleting and redownloading the voice.
it works for a while and then produces static again.
i will post here again if i find a solution.

thanks.
patrick.

I personally have an iPhone 14 Pro, and Siri voices are 100% fine. I knew somebody who had an iPhone 11, and her iPhone would do the same static issue you mentioned. She now has an iPhone 16, and it doesn’t happen. She was also given an iPhone SE three to borrow for a few days, and she didn’t have any issues with Siri voice 4 on that phone either.
This makes me believe it is just an iPhone 11 specific issue.
I believe the static has something to do with the AI the voices are using, so you should be able to use Siri voices in other dialects besides English US, because those ones are not powered by AI; they require a much larger size to download.
If you want my personal recommendation, English UK voice one is a pretty good one, as well as voice too. The Australian ones are also pretty good in my opinion.
If you do want an English US voice that is guaranteed not to crash, I would use other TTS engines as people have suggested.
If you want my recommendation for natural sounding male voices like Voice one, give Evan or Nathan a try.
Other good voices include Ava enhanced.

at the moment, i am trying susan to see what happens.
however, for some reason, sometimes it jumps back to the primary voice, maire, which seems to be the primary voice for phones in english (ireland).
i will let you know if this crashes as well, but thanks for the info about iphone 11.
