why I recommend Triode over ooTunes

iOS and iPadOS

Note to unlock all features a subscription or one time payment is required.
The prices are as follows:
One Month 99 cents.
One Year $9.99.
Lifetime $30.
This is worth it for the reasons below.
1 ooTunes is no longer updated. Also unless you do phone to phone transfer your OOTunes favorites may not transfer with you. You can't get a response from the developer if a stream stops working or you want a stream added.
2 Triode works on the following devices:
iOS
Apple TV
Mac.
iPad OS

3 the app is continuously updated.
4 stations are pulled from the Radio.browser info database.
This allows anyone around the world to contribute links and fix links should they become outdated.
5 if you have the streaming URL you are able to add stations manually.
6 you are able to reorder your favorites.
7 Triode has a nice feature when a stream is playing called Shazam so you can see the title and artis that is playing. This is useful for someone if the station isn't showing the title and artist information.
8 Triode has iCloud sink so your stations immediately follow you from device to device.
9 there is a connecting sound that plays on iOS as you are waiting for the station to connect. This is brilliant.
10 stations connect quickly and seamlessly
11 the developers are trusted and committed to accessibility.
This is the same company that did apps such as twitterific.

I agree with Dennis. This app is excellent. I have been using it ever since Twitterrific stopped working and I think it is probably one of the best radio apps I have used.

Can you access IHeart and Audacy stations? That's the main reason I still use OOTunes.

By Dennis Long on Friday, October 4, 2024 - 05:06

Yes you can.
If your station isn't there you want send me a message and I'll attempt to send you the stream link.

I've been looking for something like this because of the many broken streams in OooTunes. Off to check it out.

Great shout. Here in the UK it's oddly difficult to get BBC, you have to use BBC Sounds, which is very limited..

This means I can have it on several platforms, including my apple TV. I've purchased the full thing, though I did note it says for at least 3 years which means that, if they do drop support after 3 years, it's the same price as the subscription. Maybe the model is a little off there?

A couple of points:

1. There is no BBC radio five live I can find, which is our sports channel.

2. It would be great if I could call a station through this and it play on HomePod. This used to be the behaviour of the bbc sounds app, for a short time using a shortcut, the HomePod would recognise it was where it had been called from and send the shortcut out that way, it doesn't seem to work like that any more though.

for anyone that can't find a stream message me privately I'll do my best to find your link. Like I said the advantage of this is users can manually add stations to both the radio browser data base or add it to the app for immediate access. As For the updates that is there in case they would have to do a major overhall and need to charge for an update. this app is awesome.

I sent you a private message let me know if that works for you.

Hi Denis,

thank you, I did actually find it in the search, it just wasn't included in the IOS grouping of BBC stations, went 1, 1 extra, 2, 3, 4, 6. I'm guessing this is just grouped by the developer who hasn't included all the BBC stations under the BBC heading.

There is a similar app, for any interested, for the apple watch called streamlets.

Really, I'd like to see this app on apple watch now, especially for those who have the Ultra 2 and 10 as they can use the speaker, though you can also just use the speaker with Streamlets too. It would just be nice to have it all in one on every platform ever forever and ever...

Could catch here, Denis. The streams seem pretty good quality, 320 kbps, which is the same as BBC sounds. Now listening to a bunch of Torys arguing on Radio 5.

I also want it on the watch. we all need to contact them.

Can you record streams with this app? I need to record live sports for next day listening!

By Dennis Long on Friday, October 4, 2024 - 05:06

This is not possible with Triode. In fact very few apps offer this feature. More over this would go against the copyright restrictions so it is understandable why it isn't in there.

your welcome If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Is there a difference between the subscription model to buying this thing outright?

The only time I've seen OoTunes receive updates is when something major breaks because of the OS, and that hasn't happened for a few years now.

By Dennis Long on Friday, October 4, 2024 - 05:06

I just bought it outright. It is an awesome app. The biggest thing that finally pushed me away from ootunes is when you would email the developer you didn't get a response. I found Triode in the app directory tried it and off I was.

I added one other reason that came to mind that someone mentioned on another post. I also added correct contact info for the Icon Factory.

I've been using this app for about a month now, and unfortunately my impressions thus far have been less than favorable. For some unfathomable reason, I have not been able to get a consistent stream going with any of the stations I select. They will play for maybe 5-10 minutes, then cut off once a station switches to commercials; in fact, I'm lucky if I can get through a couple of songs without having to reestablish the connection. It doesn't seem to matter whether I'm using wifi or data either. This was never an issue for me with OOTunes, which I switched away from for precisely some of the above-mentioned reasons ā€¦ really hoping that I didn't just sink $30 into a lifetime subscription for nothing.

I can't say I've experienced this have you reached to the developer? I'll keep an eye on it. If I notice it I will report it.

I had the same experience with a stream cutting out when I played it using Siri. As soon as the station went to a commercial, the stream stopped. This to me suggests it may be related to how commercials are handled on online streams.

By Dennis Long on Sunday, December 22, 2024 - 20:06

I put it on straight cellular data. I just listened for over 30 minutes with no issues. It continued to play even after commercials. Have you tried on both WIFI and cellular data?

Hi Dennis,

I think this issue is related to how stream providers handle commercials. I recently experienced the exact same issue when playing an online stream of a station using iOS' built-in radio integration through Siri. The station was provided by iHeart Radio but I accessed it through Siri. So I don't think it is an app-specific issue but rather related to the requirements/restrictions put in place by the stream provider.

By Ravenpaw on Sunday, December 22, 2024 - 21:06

If I remember correctly, OOTunes would insert their own ads when a station went on commercial break. Maybe that's why I never experienced any issues with them? In either case, I guess I shouldn't have tried fixing what wasn't broken ā˜¹ļø.

By Ravenpaw on Sunday, December 22, 2024 - 22:06

but the commercials I got definitely weren't the ones the actual station would play. There was always a bit of an awkward moment where the radio commercial would start running, then abruptly get cut off and replaced by whatever ad the internet stream provider wanted to put there instead. They were usually the types of ads you heard when listening to music streaming services like Pandora or Spotify without a paid subscription.

By Blindxp on Sunday, December 22, 2024 - 22:06

I used this application for a short amount of time a few months ago and I found the experience good enough for what I usually listen to.

I like that I can listen to radio stations from other countries, for example if Iā€™m in Australia, I can listen to something from America, England, Spain or wherever. As long as itā€™s there, your options are essentially limitless compared to any other app.

Does anybody know if this is compatible with macOS? Or just iOS and Apple TV?

In regards to the built-in radio on iOS, Iā€™ve never had any issues with it cutting out during commercials. But I donā€™t use Siri to play the radio stations, I go directly through the Music app.

By Ryder on Sunday, December 22, 2024 - 23:06

I tried Triode and didnā€™t have any streaming issues but after a couple weeks I deleted it, just didnā€™t click with me. MyTuner Pro, Broadcasts, Radio Tuner and Receiver Radio are much better in my opinion. They also cost a lot less. However even if you like Triode it doesnā€™t hurt to have several radio apps. Each has a different method of discovering new stations around the world. I can then find specific songs and albums on my Music Unlimited app through Shazam.

By Dennis Long on Monday, December 23, 2024 - 01:06

I also have BroadCasts and it is also good. One other advantage to BroadCasts is it has a watch app as well.
