Change in behavior of swipe up on developer 18.1 beta 5: Three clicks = siri, 4 clicks (high pop) = open apps

Apple Beta Releases

Hey all.

Just wanted to drop you a note regarding the new IOS beta 18.1 as I was a little confused.

To access the screen of open apps as I do, the gesutre no longer works, instead it takes you to an on screen version of siri. You just need to push up a little further and there will be another sound, a higher pip and that will get you into it.

As far as I can tell this is a new addition, though I've skipped a round or two.

HTH for anyone who was a little baffled, like me.

PS: You can also turn off this behaviour by going into settings > Apple Intelegence and siri > Type to siri, and turning it off.

Personally I find it a bit awkward to use as the quick action on the BSI keyboard doesn't seem to make it do anything. I'll put that in a bug report.

Your Feedback is Important to Improving Accessibility on Apple platforms

Don't assume that Apple is aware of a bug or that your report won't make a difference - submitting bug reports directly to the company helps them reproduce and resolve the issue faster. Your report may provide crucial information. The more reports they receive, the higher the priority they give to fixing the bug.

If you're using a beta version, use the Feedback Assistant on your device to submit feedback and bug reports. If you're using a public release, follow the instructions on this page.

Type to Siri should be at the top of the screen, not where the app switcher has been for years. I will report this bug this afternoon to both the Siri and Accessibility areas of feedback. they need to liaise on this particular bug. This is also problematic for people who have motor difficulties such as tremors because now the app switcher is even harder for them to access.

It's voiceover specific then?

As I say, you can turn off type to Siri which will restore the original functionality. Still, it was a frustration when I updated and perplexed me.

It is reversed. two sounds is as of today type to Siri. 3 tones as of today is app switcher. I've reported. I believe it should be changed back to what it was previous because the app switcher has always been two clicks. It is going to confuse the heck out of people if they change it. it needs to be filed under accessibility and voiceover.

Subject line says it all. However the Siri shortcut should be above the app switcher. I wish you could set it to use regular Siri (as in speak to Siri), but still have this as an option to type to Siri when speaking may not be for the best.

I agree regarding the order. or even have it as an extension of the pull down where I think there are only two actions

Confused here. I don't have any type to siri option in settings and I'm on 18.1 public beta 2. However, as far as I know and it has always been like this swiping up has 2 sounds home 3 app switcher. From the top down 2 sounds control center 3 notifications center. So am I missing something here?

Type to Siri is an option under Accessibility Siri. You can either talk to Siri or type your inquiry instead. HTH

I agree, placing type to SIRI on the third blip is problematic, and it should be changed to the fourth blip, as it was in earlier 18.x betas.

But, in my opinion, the largest issue with Type to SIRI is that it's incompatible with VoiceOver. VoiceOver doesn't announce that Type to SIRI has been launched. VoiceOver doesn't echo what I type. Neither VoiceOver nor SIRI reads SIRI's response. In short, it works nothing like Type to SIRI on MacOS.

I noted this in an early beta feedback report. Apple has not responded. And since no one else here at AppleVis is reporting this behavior, apparently I'm the only one experiencing it.

Thank you so much, I turned type to siri Right off. I figured it out pretty quickly myself but it was quite Awkward dragging up so far after not doing it for so long

Looks like app switcher is back to how it was before, but I can't find any way to type to siri. I read somewhere 4 finger flick down? This is a gesture I have already assigned to next heading. Any help with getting this to work very appreciated .

Like you I've already got a four finger swipe down set to a command. Still, you can create a new one by going:

Settings >> Accessibility >> Voiceover >> Commands >> All Commands >> System >> Type to Siri...

Where you can set a different touch gesture as you desire.

Personally, I quite liked the four pop thing, it was just in the wrong order. Type to siri should have been the final movement, not the penultimate one. I think it freaked some users out.

I'd also like to see, if they could, have an option for the long drag as an assignable gesture.
