An Important Update on AppleVis Founder David Goodwin and the Future of AppleVis

By Michael Hansen, 17 July, 2024

Member of the AppleVis Editorial Team

Dear AppleVis Community,

At his request, I wanted to provide you an update on AppleVis' Founder and Editor-in-Chief, David Goodwin; as well as the future of AppleVis.

As many of you already know, David Goodwin founded AppleVis in July 2010. Since that first day, David has worked tirelessly, day in and day out, to develop and maintain the AppleVis website. While myself and the rest of the AppleVis Editorial Team have supported David with the daily operations of the site, David has been the driving force behind the website--both in terms of the ideas and, on a more practical level, having sole responsibility for the technical implementation. AppleVis would not be here today were it not for David, and David has undertaken all of this work for the community on an entirely voluntary basis.

Early last week, David was hospitalized in the ICU due to a very serious and life-threatening medical issue. David was unresponsive for 8 days and almost died. We are relieved to share that he is now getting better, though he still has a long road to recovery ahead.

If you have emailed David within the last week and are still in need of assistance, please contact us using our Contact Form and another member of our Editorial Team will reach out to you.

Looking ahead, I want to be up front that right now, there are a lot of unknowns. As I mentioned previously, David took sole responsibility for the technical aspects of operating the AppleVis website. While this approach allowed for a founder's visionary leadership and rapid decision-making, it also now leaves us with a tremendous void and a lot of very important decisions that must be made. During this time, we kindly ask for and appreciate your patience as we do our best to continue day-to-day site operations and figure out what is next for AppleVis. We will update everyone when we have more information to share.

This website has been extremely valuable to me as far as discovering new apps and games. My thoughts and prayers go out to the founder David, I hope I am getting his name right, and I hope he makes a speedy recovery. My hope is that this website will continue to be maintained, as, I have made many connections on here.

By tunmi13 on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

I really hope he has a speedy recovery. Brandon Cole left, let's not have that happen here. All the best wishes.

By Sean Randall on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

I am not a big contributor but always enjoy reading the content. I have no money but plenty of sysadmin experience if you're in need of putting together a team.
Fingers crossed things improve for David.

By Bingo Little on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

It's easy to forget sometimes how scary that first iPhone purchase was. A touch screen, 200,000 apps but no idea where to start, and a whole bunch of new stuff to learn. I've got more out of this website than perhaps I realise. I pray for a speedy recovery for David and that those close to him are given strength to see this one through.

By Mlth on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

All the best thoughts and wishes for a speedy recovery to David from here!
Words can not express the importance of AppleVis for users of assistive technology, and the incredible effort that he's been putting in through the years is immensely appreciated.

By Ollie on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

I wish David a speedy recovery. If there is anything I can help with in the meantime, please feel free to reach out.

Also, I don't know if it is possible, but the suggested topics below, the top one specifically, is problematic. I don't know if there is any way of, for the time being, removing suggested topics from this post? My intendtion is not to add to the difficulties, but to be respectful, where possible.

By Kevin Shaw on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

This is heartbreaking news. I certainly pray and hope David pulls through. Thank you for the update.

If you need any help and support reach out to me please I don’t know much about website operation but obviously I can help with any queries people may have. Please let’s keep this wonderful organisation running thank you

I, too, wish David a speedy recovery and wish him and his family the best. I have benefitted greatly from AppleVis over the years since my brother directed me here, and I really hope and pray it will continue with the wonderful work and dedication of everybody. All the best.

By Andy Lane on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

That news was hard to hear. What David has created is more than just the best resource for both beginner and advanced BLV apple users but a real community of real people who are there for one another. Davids recovery will be in my thoughts.

By TheBllindGuy07 on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

Prayers and best wishes for David and his family! 🙏🙏🙏
Applevis has quite a lot of influence within the blind community. David has truely done something amazing. I hope the best for him, as well as for the future of its website and each of its staff members.

By Martijn - Spar… on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

I hope David will pull through and be stronger than ever. Best of luck to him and his family during this hard time.

By mr grieves on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

That's terrible news, but I am glad David is making progress. I hope he recovers fully and it will not be too long before he can put it all behind him. I wish both him and his family the very best wishes in what must be a really difficult time.

We owe him a great debt here on Applevis. But important though this site is to me, it pales into insignificance when something like this happens.

By David Goodwin on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

Dear AppleVis Community,

I am deeply touched by the outpouring of support, kind words, and well wishes I've received. Your messages have been a source of strength and comfort during this challenging time.

While I'm still on the path to recovery, I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you. The AppleVis community has always been more than just a website to me - it's a family. Your concern, prayers, and positive thoughts have truly made a difference in my recovery journey.

I'm making progress each day, and your encouragement motivates me to keep pushing forward. I'm incredibly grateful for the AppleVis Editorial Team's efforts in keeping our community running smoothly.

As I continue to focus on my health, please know that your support means the world to me.

Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart,

David

By Ollie on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

So pleased to hear you're making progress. We're all routing for you.

By Dennis Long on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

Keep fighting. We are all praying for a speedy recovery. It is thanks to your hard work and this wonderful site that I am an iPhone user. When I came to iPhone. I wondered could I have the same access a touch screen user did? I have issues with the touch screen and knew I needed to use a keyboard. Would I have the same access? Thanks to the Hard work of Apple and your excellent website giving me the answers I needed I confidently purchased my iPhone. The rest is history.

By Brad on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

We may have disagreed slightly in the past but that by no means means I don't wish the best for you and your recovery.

Applevis is an amazing site and I must admit I do take it for granted sometimes.

It's not easy running a website and it's even less easy with buggers like me wanting this and that change and for that I opologise.

Best wishes, Brad.

By TheBllindGuy07 on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

Let's go bro.
Seriously @David :) I've been happily ignorent about applevis as a concept despite me being blind and having tons of apple product just because I was more connected to the french side of the worldwide blind community since recently. I discovered this website in 2022 or so and really started participating when I got my first (and hopefully last) mac in 2023. As stated earlier you've done something very nice, applevis is for me and probably a bunch of other people the equivalent of r/blind especially after reddit dramma but with a nice interface and just a touch of loyalty towards apple. I wish you the best! Familly and health first in no particular order, then everything else. Best of luck!!!

By PaulMartz on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

You have put up with my snark and cynicism for about seven years and have done nothing but encourage me and make me feel valued. I'll email you, brother.

By Crazyappuser on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

Hi Dave. Just would like to wish you a speedy recovery and hope you get better soon, my best wishes.

By AbleTec on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

You go, Bro! Lots of love & prayers headed your way. I know quite a bit about website administration, but, due to my own family circumstances, I don't feel I can volunteer to help on a longterm basis as this time. I'm sorry for that. But you keep making progress, please.

By roman on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

Hello, I pray for his speadi recovery and hope to hear from you soon.

By Tarja on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

By sockhopsinger on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

I would like to join in the incredible outpouring of support for you, David. You really have created an amazing source of knowledge and comradeship here. Like many others, I too have sometimes taken the site for granted. However, I can never find enough words to say how much this website has done to help me as I grew more and more used to the iPhone. All the best wishes, mate.

By David Standen on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

David, I am glad to read you are making progress, and I wish you a speedy recovery. I have been using Apple products since 2011, and Applevis has been a great help to me over the years. We are all here to support you during this challenging time.

glad to hear form you!
and glad to know that you are recovering.
will keep praying for you!

By Magic Retina on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

I hope he has a seedy recovery and wish him and his family the best right now. I hope he knows how much good he has done and how much he has helped the blind community with this site.

Thank you also to the staff for keeping AppleBis running while David is away.

By Chris on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

As everyone else has said, I hope David recovers soon. While I may have said some things I'm not entirely proud of on here, it was never aimed at David or anyone else running this website. Instead, it's frustration with Apple's secretive culture and other company policies, as well as their unwillingness to collaborate with us using this website, which after all should be one of its primary purposes. This is a great resource, and I hope it stays around for many years to come, even if someone else has to take over. I'd like to thank everyone involved for keeping a truly valuable resource like this running since 2010.

By Siobhan on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

While i'm not one to jump on the "I'm sorry" and the like, when issues come up like this, I do understand this is a tough time for Applevis, as a site, as human contributors and for David himself and those around him. Here's hoping the update may come soon bringing more good news. I along with everyone here will be grateful of whatever operations can be continued and roll with the punches as things are decided.

By Ekaj on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

@David, so good to hear from you and I'm glad you're on the road to recovery. I know firsthand how challenging it can be to deal with something like this, but I know you will push through just like I did. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. To the rest of the crew, thank you from the bottom of my heart for keeping the lights on here at AppleVis. At this time I don't have the necessary resources to join Club AppleVis, but I'm hoping that'll change sometime. This site truly means a lot to me, as I'm becoming a technology buff these days. More specifically, I'd like to once again thank Apple for all their hard work and dedication. I realize some people disagree with me on that, but I stand by what I've said.

By Kevan on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

Get well soon! I don't get on here all the time but I like doing so.

By Bingo Little on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

That's splendid news, David! I wish you all the very best. Let's celebrate by bucking Bingo's usual trend and remaining on topic!

By Wayne A on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

My thoughts and prayers go out to David and his family as he continues along his recovery journey. Thank you to David and the Applevis staff for this incredible resource. It has been invaluable to me over the years, and is a model of how we can all work together to help each other. Take care.

By Joe on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

Hi David keep fighting and my prayers and thoughts are with you. Glad your recovering!

By SSWFTW on Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 02:48

Hey, I'm so sorry to hear about this. I love Apple Viz. I remember first accessing it many years ago when I learned to use the iPod Touch 4. This introduction to the touchscreen was mind-blowing, and Apple Viz created a safe space for me to learn a device that enhanced my life immensely. I'll always be grateful for that memory. Apple Viz is, and I hope will continue to be, a vital part of my life, and I appreciate it deeply.

I'm sending out the best to David and his family. Though I don't know him personally, he means a whole lot to me. All the best to him and his family.
