I've noticed that in edge when using NVDA if you press enter on the numberd link beneath each post; it jumps you right to that post.
I think this is great and wish either applevis could add this to their site,, if it's something they can add, or that firefox would add it to their list of features.
Having said that, I use firefox every day so here's how I navigate a forum thread.
I press control end, then I shift h back up to where I think the new stuff begins.
DO you guys navigate differently and if so, do you have a better way of navigating that I don't know about?
Comments
Same, for the most
I pretty much do as you, as I am on Firefox as well. I hate Edge. Hate it. That is another story for another time, however.
The only difference is that, after the shift+end, I press shift+3 to navigate upwards (or backwards) by headings at level 3, which are where the replies live. 🤷
I navigate by headings going…
I navigate by headings going from the top of the page.
I then use the letter K using NVDA to check if a post has new comments.
If it does, I open it in a new tab so I don't lose my place on the main page.
Rince, and repeate.
Firefox normally remembers your place from last time, Edge, not so much.
I do a similar thing with audiogames net, but with more tabs.
Interesting.
I was talking more about when opening a page on the site, but it's interesting that people have already shown there's more ways to navigate than I previously thought.
Hey kool_turk , that is so cool
I'd totally forgotten about pressing 'k' to do that. That is so cool:
2, h,k to go right to the business!
Even and old-dog like me can learn new tricks! Or, TBH, relearn old ones.
Another thing you could do.
I just thought, you could use the control/NVDA f shortcut to find the word new and go from there.
The good 'and the bad of NVDA'
The good thing about NVDA is - if you know JAWS, you pretty much know NVDA - so it takes no time at all to switch.
The bad thing about NVDA is that it is almost exactly like using JAWS - so you end up never really learning how to use it like an expert.
Case in point - I've been usig Ctrl-f for 'find' for years. It doesn't work the same as JAWS, which annohs me, but never enough to do anything about it.
I just learnt that Ctrl+NVDA+f is also a 'fnd' command and after one try, seems to work like the JAWS find...who would have thught!
That's two things I've learn today and I've only had one coffee!
Just shows the power of curiocity!
How I navigate
Immediately after loading the AppleVis website, I press the number three to jump to the first post, as posts are always at that heading level. I then press K (or L if I'm using macOS) to check if anything new has been posted. If I click on a post, I either press the number one, followed by the number two until I get to the "Add new comment" heading and then work backwards with Shift-3, or if there are only a few comments and I've already read the original post, I just press the number three immediately after loading the page until I find the comment I'm looking for. For multi-page threads, I just press the number four (since the "Pagination" heading is at level four) and then work backward with Shift-3.
To read a post, I usually press the number one, followed by K until I reach the OP's name, and then I navigate to the body using the arrow keys. If I know the OP is a Club AppleVis member, I press G immediately after loading their post, which takes me to the "Club AppleVis member" graphic, which is right before the body.
CTRL+F is the standard…
CTRL+F is the standard keyboard shortcut for opening the find dialogue in most applications and web browsers. However, screen readers like JAWS and NVDA handle this shortcut differently.
If memory serves correctly, JAWS ignores the default CTRL+F find dialogue and uses its own JAWS find feature instead, at least on web pages. To access the JAWS find dialogue, you would use a different keyboard shortcut specific to JAWS.
NVDA does not ignore the standard CTRL+F shortcut. Instead, it uses CTRL+NVDA+F as the keyboard shortcut to open its own screen reader-specific find dialogue, similar to how JAWS uses a different keystroke for the same purpose.
Chrome and JAWS
I mainly use headings. However, not sure about other Screenreaders but if you are logged into Applevis then JAWS has a neat feature. When navigating posts and say JAWS says 1 new comment it makes a bubble pop sound and if you click the link there JAWS puts you at the start of any new comments you haven't yet read rather than having to go and find them.
Sounds nice.
I'd use JAWS if it wasn't so expencive :)
I'm ok with that though, NVDA is fine for me.
Re: NVDA Find
As has been said, Control + NVDA + f, is the NVDA find hot key. It works even better if you have the Enhanced Find add-on, which allows you to arrow up and down, while in the find dialog, to search again for previously searched for items. 😉
The Enhanced Find add-on,
Now installed, so it will be exactly like JAWS. Not bad for a basic screen reader!
@Assistive Intelligence
You are adorable. Never change. 😀
a quicker way to navigate.
If you just press e, it'll jump to the subject box,, then you can shift h as many times as you need.
Good point
I actually do not use that one very often, usually I just use 'f' to get around form fields. 😇
Using Edge with Jaws
Using the Edge browser with Jaws, I open the main page of Applevis and navigate through the topics using the H key. When I land on a topic that interests me, I arrow down to check if there are new posts. If there are new posts, I click on the link of the number of new posts. This takes me directly to the first new post for that topic.
You can use the H key to navigate from post to post, but I often just do a say-all to begin reading the page from that point. When I'm done, I use alt-left arrow to go back to the previous (main) page. Sometimes I need to issue a Jaws screen refresh (insert-escape) to redisplay the page. Usually, I land on the link I just used to read the new messages in the topic, so I just continue using the H key to move through the remaining topics. I find this method very efficient and it works well for me.
@jeff
I wish firefox would do that, landing you on the first new heading, I think it did once here but that was a while back, or perhaps I was dreaming, who knows.
Another navigation tip
Another thing that helps simplify my navigation of AppleVis is to press G immediately after loading a blog post or podcast episode, which takes me right to the graphic that always precedes the body or episode description.
