VoiceOver and dictation

Hi, I have recently upgraded from SE 2020 to a 13 mini and I am now having problems with dictation.

VoiceOver is not automatically rading what I have dictated, so I have to navigate to the edit box to confirm what has been written.

Previously, once I have finished dicgtating, VoiceOver reads what I have said, then I can either edit the text or start dictating again.

Has anyone experienced this before? If so, is there a fix please.

Thank you

The times I use it, I had to go to the text to read it. Never recall it reading it back to me. Using 13 pro and until recently, iOS 17.4.1.

Hey there,

I am also running iOS 17.4.1 on an iPhone SE3, and have run into this a time or two. What seems to work for me is, whenever I am on an input field, I double-tap with 2 fingers on the keyboard and (once the iPhone chirps or vibrates) dictate my words, and then double-tap again with 2 fingers to end dictation.

This will usually give me a tts feedback. I find, on the other hand, if I try tapping on the dictate buttons, I get all kinds of weirdness.

HTH. 🙂

Hi, thank you for responding so quickly. I am trying the two finger double tap on the keyboard thing now, and that seems to work. Thank you!

For me, sometimes it speaks when I terminate dictation, sometimes it just beeps. I haven’t figured out any thing to associate it with.
What I am, noticing, in addition to inserting, millions of unwanted commas, is that if I dictate a period and start another sentence, it often doesn’t capitalize The first letter of the sentence. what’s really odd is that if I delete that letter, then the letter I insert is automatically capitalized, So it does know it should be capitalized. so I have to go through my stuff, delete extra commas, and delete and reinsert the first character of sentences. I have tried ending the insert at the end of each sentence, and I think that may help.
I noticed this on 17.2.1, and I’m still seeing it on 17.5.1. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if it were fixed in 18?

I will say this completely without hesitation or the need for confirmation, but when I was using an iPhone 6s, I used to dictate in Turkish and would get insanely accurate results. Now, I have a 15 Pro Max and have been using dictation rarely, but in English. Although it should work much more accurately in English than in Turkish, since English is the most common language, it’s not as accurate as expected. This is not due to my accent or anything—I enunciate well, and it works worse with Turkish too. Weird stuff. By the way, I’ve never used the dictate button since the magic tap (two-finger double tap) is much faster and accessible at any time, but it’s good to know that VoiceOver has problems when the dictate button itself is used.

Dictation has definitely lost quality with iOS 16.
