Hi folks, I know I've talked about this a lot over the years but I'm finally, finally ready to spring for an iPhone as a supplement to my android. There are just enough apps that work better on one platform or another that I think it's time to get the best of both worlds. I've gotten over the lightning port -- well, maybe not but I'll only complain about it once, I'm looking at the SE but I see it only has 4 gigs of working memory. I understand iOS handles Ram a little differently than android, you don't need as much but I've also read reports here of some high quality voices gobbling up a lot of that working memory and slowing down other apps. Is that a problem on the SE or does it mostly effect older phones with 3 gigs of ram and less? I'm a little worried about future proofing but maybe I shouldn't be so much if this is a secondary device mostly meant to fill holes in my existing setup. I welcome all thoughts but please be constructive, I'm not here to violate any forum guidelines or disrespect anybody.

That is also the last phone you will get with a home button. Battery is decent, and all software work as predicted.

If you want to make sure you're really futureproofing yourself, wait for the new SE. It most likely won't have the home button, but it will have USB C and the A16 or A17 CPU.

Yeah I hear you. Thing is I've been waiting for two years already and knowing Apple they probably won't make another SE until at least this time next year but I can't afford the 15 and frankly it would seem like overkill even if I could. I don't need two flagship phones, I need something that will work with my NLS eReader and handle the few odd apps I don't have on the android side of the fence. Still that USB C port would make a world of difference for me.

Thanks for this prospective, it's much appreciated. I'd be fine without the home button but having a tactile touch ID would be nice, I've gotten used to the under display fingerprint things on the android side but they're not as convenient.

Hi,
After my issue with an iPhone 15 Pro, see my post here, for details, I am now running an iPhone SE third GEN with iOS 17.4.1. Before this, I was running an iPhone SE 2020, and I will tell you that this phone is wonderful. All of the apps I use are very snappy, and open right away without trouble. One example is Microsoft's Seeing AI, which used to take almost 3 full seconds to load on startup on my old SE 2020 model iPhone. Another example would be be my AI, found in the Be My Eyes app. When I take a picture and ask it to describe it to me, that description comes back so much faster on the SE3.
speaking of photos, while I cannot directly confirm this, I am told the photos I take on this SE3 have a sharper quality to them, with more clarity and detail. My advice would be, do not listen to the hype, this phone came out the same year as the iPhone 14/Pro, runs the same processor as the iPhone 13/Pro, and will give you years of responsiveness, updates, and joy to use.
One final thought, you can get an iPhone SE3 for as little as $200. 👍

Hi, thanks for the thoughtful take. Considering it more my main reservation is actually the USB C connectivity on newer iPhones, I'll be mad at myself if I get the SE and a new version which works with all the peripherals I already use comes out in September lol. Of course that's why I've held off this far and maybe the newer model isn't coming until next March.

I'm just curious where you've seen the SE for $200? That sounds a lot better than the normal market price if I'll end up just needing a new one in six months or a year, at least I could get the benefits now. Used is perfectly fine if it's in decent shape.

SE3 is better
I upgraded from the SE2 to the SE3 despite forum I had read that said don't bother and I found it worked so much smoother and faster than the SE2.
Incidentally, the SE2 only has 3GB of working ram and the SE3 has 4Gb but in any event, sometimes I found I had to close apps that were sitting in memory if I ran into a problem with running a particular app if you can afford it, I would recommend the SE3
SE 2022
I don't think I have any RAM issues with mine. I am only a permanent tech novice, though.
Since fingerprint readers came up, I have struggles with the fingerprint reader, probably because I keep sanding off my fingerprints, and have to redo the images every day, if I want to use that way to unlock the phone. However, plugging the charge into the lightning jack somehow electrically interferes with the reading of fingerprints, and it might have happened with a pair of earbuds I plugged in yesterday. I usually enter the passcode and skip the bio-gobbledygook nowadays.

As for you, Old Bear, thanks for giving me a good chuckle! I'm pretty sure I'm the novice here. I'm trying to imagine sanding off your fingerprint now, wrecked one of mine pretty good with a table saw about a decade ago.

Agree 100%. The SE3 is blazing fast next to my old SE2. Especially with the current iOS. And no disrespect toward anybody still using the SE2, but I definitely enjoy having 5G/5G plus when I am out and about in the world. 😁👍

It really is a problem. A sanding block is enough, or sharpening tools on float glass and abrasive paper will make my fingerprints unreadable to my iPhone. Freehand-shaping things on belt and disk sanders works even better.
The 5G only kicks in on my phone if I go outside, I have a metal roof. I'm not sure it is making things any faster for the web stuff I do with my SE.
I tend to stick to old-time, hand saws, especially the ones that can be sharpened. You can usually stop before it hits bone...

I'm actually looking at the SE 3 released in 2022. I'm not plugged into apple world enough and didn't say the right thing haha. There's no way I'm getting a phone with 3 gb ram, optimizations or not here in the middle of 2024, not happening. I don't really care about the 5g as it will be much better on my s22 anyhow, perks of a flagship phone with a newer modem and all that, was planning on hot spotting to the SE for voice vista or the odd web browsing situation where I want voiceovers's superior navigation controls .
Now to Old Bear that totally makes sense, it's just been a while since I've done woodworking and I never quite got the hang of it. My table saw accident was in a training center, totally my fault in retrospect nobody else forgot to set the guard up properly that one time, I'd done it enough my instructor wasn't there holding my hand. Anyways I've got this fun scar on my left ring finger now, almost a decade later and it still sometimes flares up if I slam that finger into something just the wrong way lol but no real harm done in the end.

Both the Samsung Galaxy S22, and the iPhone SE 2022, both came out the same year. However, you are correct that the galaxy has more ram than the iPhone SE 2022, double in fact. As the iPhone SE 2022 only has 4 GB of RAM. I have a friend who has a Samsung galaxy S22 ultra, and he and I have done side-by-side comparisons of things like loading webpages, streaming YouTube/Netflix videos, etc. Both of us on 5G/5G plus. In my experience, albeit limited, the speeds were comparable.
Of course, everybody's needs are different, so to each, their own. All I am really saying is that, once you get past the Trent hype, the SC 2022 is not a bad phone at all. Even in 2024. 🤷♂️

I don't think I could write a comparison on here of all of the differences between the iPhone 8, and the iPhone SE 2022. However, I can definitely point out the highlights.
• A15 Bionic chip (Same processor in the iPhone 13 models )
• 4 GB of DDR 4 ram (as mentioned above)
• improved battery (see note below)
• better camera software & functionality
Regarding the battery, Apple claims this phone can get 15 hours of video playback, 10 hours of video streaming, and something like 50 hours of audio playback. Honestly though, that all depends on what else is being processed on the phone at any given time.
Regarding the camera, the A15 Bionic has a lot to do with why the cameras are better with this phone, as opposed to the iPhone 8 or iPhone SE 2020. Technically, they are the same as the iPhone 8, but with the better processor, ram, and software, the pictures turn out with more clarity and attention to detail. I am, of course, basing this on what my sided friends tell me. Ha ha
I can say, with some degree of certainty, that both Seeing AI and be my AI turn out results much quicker and with less 'do overs' than my previous iPhone. 🙂📱
Just got the SE
I’ve got the phone in its box right now. I imagine I’ll have some questions and eventually I’ll do an updated android and iOS comparison post, not in a vs kind of way more just highlighting the strengths of both and how I end up using each now that I have both again.

Shiney New Toy
Hope it works well for you. I was just pondering how I mostly do all my web browsing stuff on my desktop, but just having that iPhone as a backup system if the desktop/wired-network/electricity goes wrong is comforting.

Sometimes, it's nice to just kick back on the couch and surf the Interwebs on my iPhone. While a touchscreen device will never, I repeat never, replace a physical keyboard, sometimes it is nice to do things the simple way.
And hey, if you are a Mac user, sometimes it's nice to just use Safari on an iPhone, and get away from the whole SNR debacle… 😇

Yeah I think having a backup is good when a dev breaks an app or they just cared to make it accessible on one platform but not both. It feels like a luxury but a useful one. Is screen recognition the same as image detection? I put it in my rotor but can't seem to find it there, probably user error after not touching the platform for almost 3 years …
There's a thing you have to do
In the VO settings there's a section called Voice Over Recognition. Inside there are on/off switches in subsections for image descriptions, screen recognition and text recognition. The rotor will let you turn on and off image and screen on the fly if you turn them on in that section, or you can do it in the related subsection.
I don't think I'm using the correct terms and so on, but just go in there and fool around. It will probably download a little software when you first turn any of them on, and there are explanations.

What this does is, or at least is supposed to do, it's takes an inaccessible app, and makes it accessible. I believe the CSR screen reader on Android has a similar function, but I can't remember what it's called on that screen reader, as I am only familiar with it from a documentation perspective.
