Ever since I got my iPhone 4s, I have always stayed with Samantha, compact voice. Every single time we have a new change, I try every one of them. Unfortunately, for my use case, the voices simply do not perform as I think they should. They cannot read a group of text properly, without smashing up the words to the point that it's a high irritation point for me. Samantha compact voice is still my favorite.

Using Tom in my iPad 9, iPhone 13 pro and Series 9. Tried several voices but they are not great. Even did eloquence but is not the same as in my windows PC with jaws.

Why do Samantha and Daniel not pause at commas like the other voices do? They do not raise their pitch like the other voices. This, combined with the fact that none of the Vocalizer voices let you differentiate between a full stop and an exclamation mark, make things even more challenging. Still, only a few other voices remain as clear as Samantha's compact variant at high speeds. High quality voices have their own problems like weird inflection and choppy speech, making compact voices my preference over so-called enhanced ones. I wish we had Aaron still available as a VoiceOver voice. We do have Nicky's enhanced variant, but even her compact version is no longer usable, even though she is still part of the OS.

Some of the compact voices I can't hear very well. But then, for instance, Evan Enhanced has awful popping and rustling noises in the background. The compact version doesn't have that problem but some words are weirdly muffled; "app" sounds like "ed" or "egg" and "active" sounds like "edtive" or "edited" for instance. Currently I am using Zoe Enhanced, which has a nice balance of clarity and inflection. Its inflection is decent, I think; it's good enough that I can more easily follow what I'm hearing, and the cadence isn't so halting or singsong as to be distracting. Zoe compact is softer, but I can still make it out.
