Questions
Can it find keys on the floor? If it's real time, can you scan the floor to find the keys you dropped, or do you have to take one picture/photo at a time? How slow do you have to scan the floor to find the keys you dropped? How fast does it tell you what it's seeing? Last, when it finds the keys, what does it say "keys"? Or, keys in the upper left quadrant of the picture? Or, keys 3 feet to your left? Or, what?
It's real time
It's real time. You hold out your phone and it just speaks stuff it sees. So far I'm not really convinced that it is accurate enough to be useful. Certainly if you move it too quickly it will hallucinate like mad - apparently my little office is a saw mill, shoe store and library and has black cabs, go-karts and forklifts in it. Not to mention the millies raining down from the sky. (Seriously)
I need to try it out with some actual tasks though like the dropped keys scenario. There's a big difference to just horsing about and trying to make proper use of it.
The phone also goes to sleep while you are using it which isn't helpful but guess that can be sorted in a future update.
Some Suggestions
I highly recommend that the developers consider my suggestions posted here: https://applevis.com/forum/ios-ipados/app-request-developers-ai-driven-photo-description-app-adds-captions-images-either
I also have the following suggestions: Can we not have objects described along with their positions? Is it not possible to position speech/voices/sounds using spatial/binaural/3-D audio? It would be great to know how far something is away from me and where it is. We should also be able to toggle direction and distance info along with object names, with options that let us pick how directions and distances are announced (metric/imperial, or left/right, compass, clock etc.).
Finally, I would love to be able to explore an image and here everything in its own place. If only we still had 3-D touch... Still, I have an idea that can let us explore images in 3-D. Why not use and move the device itself to use it like some cursor? This came to my mind just now already while I was writing this post, so you are more than welcome to suggest better alternatives.
Not working without headphones
Is anyone still using this app?
I've not really opened it since I bought it, but the other day I dropped something and couldn't for the life of me find it. So I opened it up again but found it was totally silent. I found by chance that if I had my Air Pods in, then it would start working. Well, it kept saying "mousetrap" for some reason but at least I could hear something. Unfortunately I only found this out much later so it didn't help me find it.
Also, there is now a search option.
