Uber - Request a ride

Category

Description of App

Uber is a ridesharing app for fast, reliable rides in minutes – day or night. There’s no need to park or wait for a taxi or bus. With Uber, you just tap to request a ride, and it’s easy to pay with credit card or cash (in selected cities only).

Whether you’re going to the airport or across town, there’s an Uber for every occasion. Uber is available in more than 500 cities worldwide – download the app and take your first trip today.

Requesting your Uber is easy – here’s how it works:

- Just open the app and tell us where you want to go.

- The app uses your location so your driver knows where to pick you up.

- You’ll see your driver’s picture and vehicle details, and can track their arrival on the map.

- Payment can be made by credit card, cash (in selected cities only), Apple Pay, PayPal and more.

- After the ride, you can rate your driver and provide feedback to help us improve the Uber experience. You’ll also get a receipt by email.

Need a simple way to get from A to B quickly? Take uberX, our most affordable option for individual travel.

Want to save money on your ride? Take uberPOOL – you’ll travel with other riders heading in the same direction, and enjoy a lower fare.

Want a more exclusive experience? Take a high-end vehicle with UberBLACK. And there are even more options – whether you’re travelling with a big grou or need a vehicle with accessibility features.

Accessibility Comments

On the Ride Options screen, VoiceOver does not speak the ETA or pick-up location for the selected vehicle type. Other users (see comments #69-74 below) have also reported difficulties changing the pick-up location or destination once the ride is booked, though I have not attempted to do this in recent versions of the app so cannot personally comment. Lastly, not all of the buttons in the app are labeled properly.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads most page elements.

Button Labeling

Most buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

There are some accessibility issues with this app, but it can still be used if you are willing to tolerate these issues and learn how to work around them.

They said in their blog article that they were going to fix te issues voice over users had. I might be remembering something else though. Lol!

By Toonhead on Thursday, October 22, 2015 - 09:44

Well, that's not very re-assuring. Perhaps you could provide a link to this blog post?

At least the latest version, 2.98.7 appears to work. It appears that what you have to do though is to touch, not swipe, but touch the screen quickly after you double tap the trip options button. Then the options stay on the screen and you can get to them either way, by swiping or exploring. They visually disappear quickly too if you don't touch the screen, I don't know if voiceover has anything to do with that or not.

It's all over applevis, but here is the blog post they admired they messed up.They did not promise an ETA for the fix but they warned users not to update to 2 week's ago's update. They were working on a fix.

Hi all,

In the last few versions of the app, I am unable to find a way to get an estimated fair. The app used to announce the estimate as part of the voiceover hint for the request button, but that seems to have stoppe.

Does anyone know how to access the fair estimate now? Did uber remove this function?

Thanks,

William

I have been using Uber for nearly 6 months and use them almost every weekday afternoon to travel from work back to the local railway station. My work colleague, who is also blind, uses a guide dog and apart from 2 Uber drivers who refused to transport the dog, I have experienced no issues at all. Appropriate action was taken by both of us, to Uber and the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, and the complaints were handled appropriately. I have found most Uber drivers will really go out of their way to assist and they want the experience to be as comfortable as possible. As others have stated, I highly recommend those who haven't given Uber a try, to do so. I am located in Sydney, Australia.

So I was going to take Uber home the other day, I had it on the second screen where it said sellect an option, and had the ride I wanted selected but couldn't get it to go through. Was I missing something?

By Troy on Friday, April 22, 2016 - 09:44

The fair estimator still works, after you enter your address and destination there should be a button that says get a fair estimate or something to that affect. As far as rides not going through I have no clue on that one. I also noticed once my uber is ordered there's a new option on the trip info screen about music. I'm thinking that's a new feature where you can request what type of music you wanna hear?

By Deb on Friday, April 22, 2016 - 09:44

Hi Jeff, There is a button at the bottem of the screen that says Request Uber that you select. The only time that I haven't had the ride actually go through was once when I didn't have a good signal (inside a large office building) and once when there wasn't a car available. In the later case it did put that message on the screen. HTH.I'm very impressed with Uber and the service they provide!

I have updated my app to the latest version 2.130.0 and if the driver becomes unavailable voiceover still announces that the driver is x amount of minutes away even if voiceover says uber x unavailable. was wondering if anyone has experienced this and who we can contact to get it resolved.

By KE7ZUM on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 - 09:44

I have to say using uber pool is accessible, except when it comes time to choose the number of seats. If you swipe the page refreshes. When you explore by touch you cannot select the number of seats. I got lucky and selected 1. Can someone else test, then let the uber team know what's up if at all possible? I already did through twitter but sadly no response as of yet.

Does anyone have this issue? We moved in to a condo last year. I put my home in. When the drivers see it, it takes them to a totally different place about 2 blocks away in a townhouse community. It is basically behind our huge complex. How can I try to fix this?

By Kareem Dale on Thursday, February 22, 2018 - 09:44

I am using the latest version of the Uber App and the latest IOS version (11.2.5) on an iphone 8. On the home screen of the App, there is a Current Profile button where you can change between payment profiles of personal or business. Double tapping this button is no longer working. Is anyone else experiencing this and/or does anyone have a work around?

By Justin on Thursday, February 22, 2018 - 09:44

Hi,
So the address thing. I noticed that a a few months ago as well. I also live in a condo, and I put in my address as home. Driver shows up later, but she said she was waiting at a house like two blocks away from me. I said I thought I put in the right address, I know I did. So what I do from then on is I just put my home address in, not as "home" so it works great then.

This sounds good. I have checked out their website and it's not bad at all in terms of VoiceOver performance. Full disclosure: I briefly know a guy who drives for Uber, and I know someone who drives for Lyft as well. I've been a paratransit rider off and on for quite some time, and it most definitely has its good and bad points. Scheduling being one of the latter, at least for me. Although, in fairness to the drivers I've had I have to commend them. But I'm definitely checking out the Uber app hopefully very soon. Been rather busy with other things, but I need and want to get out of my apartment more and I'm not the only one saying that either.

Hi all. I'm back to report that a sighted tutor and I took Uber to and from the YMCA this morning, and it was a success. This was my first time using Uber. Both drivers were very helpful and courteous. The ride to the Y ended up being an Uber-Pool, because I think that's what came up first in the app. Speaking of the app, I'm finding it to work pretty well with VoiceOver. I'm still not quite there regarding typing on the iPhone, so my tutor assisted me with that part. But I was able to rate the second driver and tip him.

Using the latest version released, I am unable to change pickup address or destination if I made a mistake or if GPS got it wrong.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Open the Uber app and choose one of your suggested destinations.
2. You will find the screen to choose the service you want but the edit boxes to change origin or destination will not be there. This means that to make sure that the pickup point was selected correctly you will need to add both addresses manually instead of picking a suggested destination and then edit pickup if needed.
Can anyone else repro this?

Even if you enter a destination manually, the button to edit pickup doesn't seem to be there. I have used the voiceover feedback option near the bottom the help section in the app through accessibility. I would recommend others do this as well to report the issue.

By Justin Philips on Sunday, September 22, 2019 - 09:44

Instead of bettering their service, they are notorious for fiddling with the look of the app.

By KE7ZUM on Sunday, September 22, 2019 - 09:44

I use freebird instead. This alous you to get cash back on yoru rides and it will work nicely with uber and lyft. Try that and see if that works for you.

In addition to the origin and destination fields missing when requesting a ride once you are assigned a driver the item indicating how long till they arrive which counts down and then says Meet Your Driver is no longer accessible through Voiceover. In speaking with friends all of these items are still visually exactly where they have always been to anyone looking at the screen, but due to something in one of the recent updates they managed to break the accessibility through Voiceover.

I’ve submitted this through the app’s Help area under Accessibility and would encourage as many people as possible to do so since I’m assuming this is the quickest and most direct waya to get this feedback to those who have the ability to correct it.

You are right. However, for the ETA there is a workaround: if you expand the the trip options by tapping on the information of your driver, you will find the ETA in that screen. It is not ideal but a good way around the issue for now.
I posted this issue here because in my country, Argentina, the accessibility feedback is not available. So I hope those who can report it take the time to do it and hopefully a fix will be released soon.
Thanks all for confirming

Where can you find the app version with voiceover? A sighted person saw it I think on the settings menu but I couldn’t find it with voiceover.
Thanks.

Greetings

A lot of folks who use Uber are telling me that they find great difficulty using the Uber app to enter a custom amount for the tip. This is definitely a problem with the way the Uber app sets up the page. Fortunately, there is a way around this troublesome problem.

Let's start on the page which comes up after your Uber ride has been completed. At the bottom of the iPhone screen, there is a slider which you use to rate your driver by flicking up repeatedly with one finger until you get to the rating you want to select. You may also notice, if you flick right, that there may be something which has already set the tip for you. If you don't want to tip this amount, do the following.

  1. Flick repeatedly to the left with one finger until you get to something which says "set custom tip." Enter a single-finger double-tap.
  2. The VoiceOver focus should land on an edit box which is initially blank. If you flick right with one finger, you should hear how much you were charged for the trip. As I said, there is a number pad below this. Use the number pad to enter the custom tip you want to pay. You do not need to enter a decimal point. So, if you want to tip $2.50, simply enter 2 then 5 then 0.
  3. Now, you want to set the tip. This is where the problem seems to occur. If you try exploring the screen with one finger, you will not be able to find the Set Tip button. I recommend that after you enter the amount of your custom tip that you ow start flicking left with one finger until you reach the "set tip" button. Now, just double-tap with one finger, and your custom tip is set.

Unless or until Uber modifies the app with a future update, this procedure should work for VoiceOver users.

Warm regards,

Curtis Chong

I will not be using Uber anymore, only Lyft. here's my reasoning, i'm not here to judge those who will still use Uber. Uber has something called Uber cash. My issue with this is as follows. Say my Uber cash balance is $1.50 My trip costs for the sake of ease, $15.00 Now in theory, the Uber cash balance is used up, leaving $13.50 for the balance to be paid with a credit card in my case. My issue is that in my example, the $13.50 should have appeared on my card, seeing as the $1.50 was used as the first payment method. Yet Uber would charge me the entire $15.00 trip. I don't care for this practice. Now unless my math is off, my example should have been calculated correctly. Please note that the prices were for ease of math, yet whatever price has been set this behavior will keep existing. If i'm mistaken please help me out. I use Lyft since I get Hilton Honors points and have acquired up a little more then expected. Of course is the hotel I'm gonna stay at, if i go on vacation, a Helton? Of course not. Murphy's law much? :)

By Jim D on Thursday, February 8, 2024 - 09:44

Siobhan and others:
I have encountered this as well. The trick is to change your payment method to Uber Cash within the wallet section of the app. The reason they don't automatically use Uber Cash is that some of us like to save up our Uber Cash until we have enough for a free ride. This is generally what I do. Once I have enough, I will change my payment method within the app and I am good to go.
Hope this helps.
Jim

I don't use uber that much but the idea of saving the uber cash is nice.
