In this episode, Thomas Domville delves into the details of iOS battery health and charging features. He begins by explaining what battery health is and why it’s important for your device’s performance. Then, he explores the various charging options that iOS provides, discussing how each one affects your device’s battery health.
A key part of this episode is the introduction of a new feature that’s only available on iPhone 15 and newer. This feature lets users set a charging limit to 80%, and Thomas discusses its benefits and how it can extend your device’s battery life. He also provides a step-by-step guide on how to set this charging limit on your iPhone 15 and newer devices.

downloading podcast file
Hi, how do you down,load the podcast? I don't see that option.
Just save the linked file to your device.
How it's done depends on what OS and browser you're using. In Edge on my Windows computer, I right-click the file and choose the option that should be something like "Save Link as..." if the interface language is set to English. I assume it would ask me whether I wished to download or view the file if I were to visit this page and listen to the episode on my iPhone in Safari.
Yet Another Helpful Walkthrough
I, too, can either listen to the file straightaway by visiting this site, or download it for later. That is what I did, and I found it most helpful as always. I don't really have a charging pattern, because even when I'm over visiting one of the neighbors I can easily come back and plug in/unplug my phone. Or sometimes what I'll do is plug it in before my workout sessions. They are now all half an hour long, so whenever possible I make a habit out of plugging it in about a half hour before the day's session. Having said that, my iPhone 7 has started to show its age and I've asked Santa for a new one this year. I'm thinking he will be good to me as he always has been, because my brother has had at least 2 iPhones and perhaps more. He is a VoiceOver user as well. So I think there will be a particular emphasis on elf consultation this year.
Mac
Firstly, thanks for another great walkthrough. I had an issue with my Apple Watch for a while where it only charged to 80% and although I always suspected something like this, it now makes more sense.
Apologies for the tangent, but any advice for keeping my MacBook battery healthy? At the moment it's just sat on my desk all day long so I always have the power cable plugged in which I think is maybe not a good idea. In the past I always thought that this meant it was not using the battery at all, but I think it is just constantly charging and draining all the time.
Re: Mac
The same general principles of battery health for the iPhone, like not keeping it constantly at 100%, also apply to other devices.
Similar to other Apple devices, if macOS detects your Mac constantly plugged into power, it will hold the battery level at around 80%, which can lessen, but not totally prevent, battery aging and degradation.
@Tyler
So if I wanted to get the most out of the battery I should be unplugging it, then plugging it back in before it gets to 30%? Seems maybe a bit of an unnecessary hassle. I noticed my power seems to be at 100% every time I've checked today, although yesterday was the first time in a while I used it with a battery so maybe that confused its routine. I often see it at 80% normally so guess that's when it's just biding its time.
Is this normal for a laptop? I don't think I've ever had a laptop that hasn't been sat plugged in all the time. Before this one it was always Windows. I could have sworn it said it was on AC power rather than charging all the time, but could be wrong. It's possible I was just assuming that based on the icon, which I could see at the time. And being a Windows laptop that battery always lasted about 5 seconds anyway so it didn't have much choice!
