Stopping VoiceOver from reading notifications in iOS 17.1

Hi all. I know this topic has been discussed in other versions of iOS, but I'm trying to get VoiceOver to shut up when notifications come in on my iPhones lock screen. So, for example, if I'm listening to an audiobook and my screen is locked, and notification comes in, the audio is ducked and the whole notification is read out, for example, if someone sends me a WhatsApp message in text, not only am I told what type of message it is, and who it's from, but a lot of the text is also read out. I would just like to know that there's a notification there possibly who it's from and what app. I would even go so far as simply just to have the notification sound and be able to pick up my own notifications when I unlock my iPhone. I've looked in the voiceover verbosity settings and there are things you can do in there under system notifications, but I'm wondering what will happen if I tap do nothing. Will the notification simply stay on my lock screen and VoiceOver won't read it out? What about notification such as time sensitive ones that I want to know about? I've tried changing the settings to speak number, but certainly on my iPhone, this doesn't appear to work. Am I misunderstanding what this verbosity setting is for? Thanks.

Set the verbosity under System Notifications to Do Nothing. That way, the notifications should just alert you via the notification tone, and you may then wake up the phone and swipe through them whenever you want. Additionally, also turn off System Notification's from VO Quick Settings (the default gesture is tap 4 times with 2 fingers). Time sensitive notifications should also behave in the same way, depending on how they have been set in Notifications or Focus settings. There may be glitches though. For instance, I use GMAIL and sometimes GMAIL notifications are still read by VO. But most of the time it should work as expected. HTH.

It works fine other than the time is still constantly announced with each incoming notification. Is there any way to stop this?

You can do a three finger double tap to turn off the speech. That way you will only hear the notification sound. You'll just have to do the gesture again when you unlock the phone.

I've experienced this too, but I solved it by deselecting braille under the notifications when locked setting in VoiceOver settings.
