This might be of some use
Note: The link below has some annoying embedded ads, but I think you can just 'Reader' past them with Command + Shift + 'r' in Safari. Anyway there are a few tips on how to translate from within What's App.
Enjoy~ 😃

Gboard
I installed Gboard, and i can use it to type,
but where is the translation feature?
anyone knows?
"G" spot
I could not resist that title...
Anyways there should be a key along the bottom-left, like you have your Dictate (microphone) key, and emoji key, so there should be a new "G" key. This opens a menu with a translate option, amongst others.
HTH.
can not find the G Thing
AM trying to find it,
Gboard seems to be accessible, but where is the translation issue?

I apparently gave poor instructions above. In my defense, I was relaying what what was posted on the link in my original reply.
Follow these steps.
1. Open iOS settings and scroll way the hell down to the bottom or near the bottom where your downloaded app settings are located; find Gboard, double click on it.
2. Enable access to "Gboard" and "Full Access". If this is too much, stop now and uninstall the app.
3. Go to any text field; Safari, Messages, Mail, What's App, whatever's clever.
4. Once your keyboard is up, feel along the bottom-left until you hear something like, "Next keyboard, emoji"; double tap this.
5. Repeat step 4, only this time you will hear, "Next keyboard, GBoard". Double tap this.
6. Now, starting at the very bottom-left corner of the keyboard, you should hear, "Numbers", above that "Shift, selected", then the letter "a", then the letter "q". If you go up once more, you will hear, "Activate Google Search. 2 flicks to the right is "Translate".
Please note this is assuming you are using the QWERTY style layout with English language. So, your mileage may vary.
