Automatic updates wakes me up

I regularly enable the Do Not Disturb setting, or whatever it morphed into with the introduction of Focus in iOS 15, before I go to sleep at night. Despite this, My phone has woke me up twice since I migrated to iOS 17.

The first time was shortly after the release of 17.0.2. Although I had Do Not Disturb enabled, my phone felt compelled to wake me shortly after midnight with the proclamation that iOS 17.0.2 could not be installed. No explanation - not that I could have grokked it at that wee hour. But when daybreak came and humans once again roamed the Earth, I updated the phone without incident, so what it was complaining about remains a mystery.

It happened again last night. This time, no complaints about not being able to upgrade. But it mumbled something that I, in my semi-conscious state, could not comprehend. And this morning, over a bowl of oatmeal and cup of coffee, I could tell my phone had upgraded to iOS 17.0.3.

Before you tell me I should just turn off automatic updates, here's your sign. Did that right after I finished my oatmeal. I'll manually upgrade my phone from now on, if that's what it takes to get a good night's sleep in the post-iOS 17 world.

But my real question is this: Why is Do Not Disturb broken?

Even if it's installing an update, rebooting, and announcing the time after the reboot, it seems like, with all the AI capabilities Apple brandishes in their marketing, the phone should be smart enough to NOT announce the time after an automatic reboot while Do Not Disturb is on.

I think mine did something like that with this last one, just updated on its own after an announcement in my sleep. I also thought it was only supposed to update while charging. As far as focus mode, I've chosen to be aggravated by notifications, rather than trying to figure out how to use the feature. I don't even like the name they've given it because it means something different in the other screen reader I use.
And as far as oatmeal in the morning, I like mine with a bit of sea salt, a dash of olive oil and a fistful of red chili pepper mixed with black pepper.

Paul, my question is this: how on earth does something like that wake you up? Bingo can slumber right through such matters and more. in a way, I wish I had your alertness. I even sleep through the watch insistantly tapping me on the wrist occasionally, which is why i have often thought it would be better if the watch could punch you or something similar. mind you, I'd probably even manage to snore my way through that.

I've also had this 'IOS 17.0.3 could not be installed' message. I had it with the previous update too, and the one before that, I think. No idea why it's complaining. The conditions for installation are all present. The difference between me and you, Paul, is I only discover these complaints in the morning.

Yeah, I don't trust that feature to actually not disturb. I turn the volume down to zero before bed and don't even bother with do not disturb.

Never had this issue. I do have it on but I always update ASAP. Good luck with iOS 17.1 when it comes up.

Okay, I'm on my second cup of coffee now, hopefully less grumpy and more eloquent. But no guarantees.

Yeah, that message about 17.0.2 failing to install is really two bugs. Why did it fail to install? No good reason that I could discern. And it definitely should not have announced the notification with Do Not Disturb enabled.

As for announcing the time, I like to be able to hit the side switch in the middle of the night to hear it. But announcing the time after a reboot should not happen if Do Not Disturb is enabled. And now that I think about it, it's really not necessary to announce the time after a reboot, period. If I want the time announced, I'll just hit the side switch. But now I'm off in the weeds of a feature request.

Bingo, long gone are the days when sleep equated to a catatonic state. Enjoy them while you've got them.

Old Bear, your oatmeal recipe sounds quite adventurous. Ever tried haggis? Now, there's an oatmeal dish that'll grow hair under your kilt.

I was awakened the same way. Wondered about that as I too use do not disturb over night. So, along with you, I turned off automatic updates. A good night's sleep is a wonderful thing!

Yes, I have. I also have a kilt and a somewhat traditional daywear outfit for very rare use. I can confirm that... the iPhone SE fits in a typical sporran with the fold-over flap, to make it about Apple products, and unless you've had a pocket added to the under apron, or somewhere else, excluding a belt clip, that is probably the only place you can put it when wearing a kilt.
And to bring it back on subject, my phone seems to wake on its own several times after 17.X updates. There's no notification, and it doesn't even speak the time, as far as I can tell. I wonder if this is a related issue.

This sound like a you problem, not an Apple or iOS problem. Either turn your phone down to a level where it won't wake you at night for things like this, become a heavier sleeper, or simply manually try to install updates during the day (rather than letting your phone do it at night while you're asleep). There are several ways around this concern that you can implement on your own, go figure. Good luck.
