YouTube App: Auto-play Off, but VoiceOver Behavior On

Hello AppleVis Community,

I hope this message finds you all in good health.

I've recently come across an issue with the YouTube app on my iPhone 12. After disabling auto-play, I've noticed an unexpected behavior in the app.

Once a video ends, the VoiceOver cursor initially focuses on the "Video player" element as usual. When swiping right, however,, the next item in the navigation order is the "Cancel Auto-play" button. This requires interaction before the "Collapse player" option becomes accessible.

I've already provided feedback to Google about this, but I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced something similar and if there might be any workarounds or solutions you've found.

Your insights and experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

Warm regards,

Sadik

Next time you are finishing with a video and you experience this, try the "2 finger scrub" gesture. In theory, it should allow you to access the other controls, such as collapse video, etc.

HTH. 😎

I’m glad I’m not the only one that’s noticed this. I kept checking the settings thinking I must’ve missed something. Very annoying

Hello Sadik, I can confirm this problem with my iPhone 15, but unfortunately I don't have a solution for it. Many greetings, Markus

Yo I have the same problem with YouTube

I am also having this issue on my iPhone 14. Let’s hope it gets fixed soon.

Hi, does anyone know how to dismiss controls on the now playing screen as I could do this a couple of months ago and this accessibility bug hasn't been addressed. When the controls are displayed, it dims the screen which won't bother some people who have no vision at all.

with that being said, not sure if this is supposed to be standard behavior now, or if it actually is a bug.

I use autoplay so this isn't an issue for me but you could report this to google through BeMyEyes for free.

1. Has anyone tried my suggestion above?
and
2. @Trenton Matthews, does Android/Talkback have a similar gesture?

Please note I am genuinely curious, not trying to bash Android. 😅

@Brian, thank you very much for the 2 finger scrub suggestion.

Unfortunately, the gesture didn't work and the "Cancel auto-play" button kept staying on the screen, obstructing the "Collapse player" button. The developers need to explicitly assign actions to the gesture in order for it to work.

If one collapses the player before the video ends, it is possible to switch to other videos of their choosing unimpeded. However this can be thought as a workaround rather than a solution.

reported to Google! note: if you write a scathing review on the App Store, and claim disregard for accessibility and voiceover, YouTube developers 10 to react quickly!

all you have to do on android, is double tap the cancel auto play for this video button, Which is in the top left hand corner. no back button or gesture required.

there is also a play next video button, while that other button is on the screen. or, you can always hit the back button or gesture to exit the video and go on your merry way to find another video.

Also having this problem. Whether a bug or by design, it's incredibly annoying!!

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I was hopeful the 2 finger scrub gesture would do it. Like Trenton Matthews said above, he can just hit the back button and go on his merry way. That' is what the 2 finger scrub is, a glorified back button. Alas, it appears the YouTube app is janky on iOS. 🫤

Looks like the version I have doesn't have that particular bug.

However, there is difficulty navigating the suggested videos below, the now playing screen. No actions available for saving to playlists as there used to be.

I have to face this problem at all emoji plus the random latest version of YouTube. I have automatic updates enabled. This is sad how Google is declining When it comes to accessibility. What makes it worse is that is happening on googles own devices, from the pixel, original to the pixel, seven, the pixel tablet in the pixel phone, a pixel watch. The Google home and garden is what else! Considering talkback was on a rice
