This is a set of the lightening wired headphones. It worked on the XSMax though at times it said, "Accessory connected" and sometimes acted like it had a short. FYI, the same thing happened with the charging cable, so it's likely not the headset. The 14 Pro Max does not acknowledge this headset at all; the audio is never routed to it. It's as if it does nothing. The port works because the phone charges. Ideas? Thank you.

Sounds like it might be the headset
I had a pair of headphones do that which had the lightning connector. It was the headphones themselves. There was a short in them. Out of curiosity, have you restarted your phone and then tried them again? Also, do you have another device with a lightning port that you can try the mon?
Bluetooth headsets
Get a bluetooth headset as a backup.
