Can't enable AppleScript for VoiceOver

I'm trying to enable the "Allow VoiceOver to be controlled by AppleScript" option in the VoiceOver Utility under the General tab.

On a few friends' laptops it works, in that when you select the checkbox, you get prompted for an admin password. However on my laptop and a random scattering of other friends' laptops, the pop up never appears and so the checkbox can't be ticked.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

I've been through a number of releases on MacOS 13.x and now have upgraded to 14 and its still not working.

In my experience, I was able to tick the checkbox, but never was prompted for a password. I am of course the admin for my own machine. So my question, on the machines you have tried, are you logged in on an admin account, or otherwise have access to admin credentials?

I'm also the admin on my laptop - I only have one user on the laptop. Normally I get prompted for these types of things. But not in this case.

Sometimes I find that the authentication dialog doesn't get forground focus when it appears. I'm not sure if it will help, but did you try checking with the window chooser (VO+f2 twice) and see if it's hiding?

Thanks - but there are no hidden windows. It's like the authentication dialog just never gets called.
