Question: Using Haptic time on watchI set a gesture to have the iPhone vibrate the time.
Question: This doesn't seem to work unless one wakes up the phone. Thus, if Voiceover is running, Voiceover verbalizes the time out loud. Is there some way of using the haptic time feature silently without Voiceover speaking the time first? After all, what is the point of silently checking the time if Voiceover is going to speak it out?
Thanks.

works
Using Series 7 with OS 10.01. I just use it. Typing from my PC and resting on my couch. Did the one finger 2 top and work. The arm has do be low close to your body. It is not consistent. Works 90%
Pete you're confused
The Haptick time is only available on the watch. You can't have your phone vibrate the time, only on your wrist. so that means if you don't want Voice Over speaking out loud in a meeting, or whatever tap twice with one finger. Make sure it's turned on though. I think it's accessibility voice over somewhere? Look at the watch podcasts David woodbridge did for this, it's wonderful.
on watch.
Tripple tap with one finger, if you are lucky, you will get haptic time.
Sorry for being unclear
My apology, I talked about the phone when I meant the watch. Here is the issue I am trying to get around.
I set up a gesture to tell the time using vibrations on the watch.
If I wake up the watch, I can perform the gesture and the watch does vibrate the time. This works great.
The problem is, when I wake up the watch (pressing the crown once), Voiceover speaks the time out loud. As I said, I can then make the gesture and the watch vibrates the time. But if I have to wake the watch and have Voiceover speak, this sort of defeats the purpose of trying to tell the time silently using the watch vibrations.
So, the real question is, how can I tell the time using vibrations without having Voiceover speak out loud.
Thanks, and sorry for any confusion.

Triple tap doesn't seem to work
I set the gesture of clenching my hand twice to use vibrations to tell the time. This works. I can't get a triple tap to do that.
Is that really a gesture?

Ok let's figure this out
Haptick time is enabled, it sounds like. I don't use the clench hand gesture, I use the double tap on the watch face twice. Of course it will speak if you push the crown, that's its' job. You want to double tap with a finger, so tap, tap. Then it will vibrate the hours minutes, not sure what face you are using, i'm the met one. If you tap the face three times, it will only show the minutes. Example below. It's twelve, a long buzz then two shorter ones. Forty, four long buzzes. Seven, short buzzes about a second apart. As I said, look under podcasts, David Woodbridge did a great job explaining all this. I don't use the gestures, though I might sometimes. You probably updated but if not, go ahead and do so.
It's been inconsistent throughout its history
essentially, though the double tap and tripple tap gestures have been a part of Watch OS alongside Haptic time for some while now, as Holger says it's a bit inconsistent. Sometimes, I have to trippple tap to get it to work. other times, double tap works fine. That said, I've just tried it five times in a row with the latest watch OS and it worked each time. One trick you could try: have your finger hover over the display for a second or so before you double tap. Assuming you have the watch with the shortest sides at top and bottom and the longest left and right, with the rectangle oriented portrait, in other words, put your thumb against the bottom side of the watch and allow your finger to hover naturally over the display for, say half a second. Then double tap. That has now worked eight times in a row for me. I am a genius!

That is not consistent with current watches. Series 9 suppose to be better with it that is why apple is bringing the feature later in OS 10 for regular Joe.
Double and Triple Taps
Siobhan,
thanks for your detailed and clear response. I finally got the double and triple tap gestures to work as you describe. How great that is to be able to tell time without bothering other people!
I think the secret in getting this working is to first hover your finger over the face for about a second before performing the taps. Perhaps the watch needs some time to wake up after lifting it or something. Anyway, doing that seems to make it more reliable.
BTW, I went to several Apple sites to look up the gestures and controls for using the watch and didn't see those double and triple tap gestures mentioned anywhere. How did you find that out? These should be easier to find.
Anyway, thanks. I am a happy camper now!

This is what I do.
Make sure to cover the screen with the palm of your hand so that your watch goes to sleep. Then, double tap with one finger and it should work. It works for me 100%.
It's all about tap speed
Glad you figured it out. I'm a fast person. Tap tap. Work! Ugh, tries again. Ok tap, tap. Hey it worked! It's not about hovering over the screen, it's just patience for a second. Irishmen don't have much but we try.
