IOS 17: New alert tones, What app. and teams sound notifications not coming anymore!

By Mister Kayne, 21 September, 2023

Forum
iOS and iPadOS

Just updated my iPhone 12 to IOS 17, thought it would fix a lot of issues I was facing with my device. Even the one I extensively wrote on here: https://www.applevis.com/forum/ios-ipados/updated-trouble-automations-when-triggered-shortcuts-ios-166

Not sure why you can't Hyperlink words when posting here on the forum?

Well I was excited to discover that there are new alert sounds with the update including one called Droplet. The challenge is that I did not set Droplet to be an alert tone for any of my apps. and now I get this sound notification and I have no clue for which app. it is!

I have very few apps. I have set sound notifications ON; the rest are just send to notification center and banner. From the ones that are critical are What app. and Teams. These apps have in app. notification settings and I checked to them being set right just as I would want them to be. Both these apps. don't have droplet as the sound alert, in fact the new alert tones cannot be found in those apps.

Now the worry and challenge is that I don't get sound alerts/ notifications for those apps. to think that the droplet alert was for those apps. would be wrong, however, I did check those apps. when I got the droplet sound alert. Tried to match any unread notifications with the time stamp of the notification to the time I received the alert; they do not match and I have received the droplet sound alert even when there were no unread messages on either app.

Is this an issue that is faced by someone else? I wouldn't know unless you comment on this post. Other noticeable changes that are just there to annoy me after the update are:
1. In the Phone app. when you go to your contacts and open any contact, swipe right, VoiceOver reads the company name and then the name of the contact. Visually it is not so. Earlier VO would read the contact name and then the company name

2. Try adding an email ID for the contact; the label changes to Home instead of Email. One has to edit the contact scroll to the email field and manually reselect the Email label

3. Those automations that have speak text action in them, the challenge I listed at the beginning of the post are still there and are extremly disturbing!

4. On IOS 16.6.1 and now on 17; still cannot delete the downloaded Siri Voices no matter which language. This is also mentioned in the link post at the beginning of the post. Here is how I am going about deleting the voices: Settings/ accessibility/ spoken content/ voices/ English. Here is something funny there is a edit button which actually is a dummy button, it does not matter if you hit it or not, you can still delete the voices provided that Siri voice is not used by VO or Siri. I have tried with edit button and without, I can delete the voices but as soon as I am off that screen and doing something else on the phone and get back, the voices are back!

5. When composing a text message and adding a contact to the TO field of the message the suggested contacts show up which you can read by swiping right. So this contact is on an android phone and does not have iMessage, then why does the suggested contact read like Contact Name, iMessage followed by their number? This is misleading as it confused me if it's going to send a text or iMessage to this contact of mine?

Sorry this is a long post, I have still not covered the other crazy happenings with my phone. I have tried resetting, restoring and also visiting a service center to check up on it just to ensure it's not a hardware issue; which it cannot be because all hardware functions work as expected. So this is a software issue and it's just not going away no matter what I tried and was recommended by the good folks at apple phone support. I have sent them screen shots, recordings and also spent hours with them by screen sharing. I am really tired with these issues, once I asked Siri to send a text message and instead of sending a text message it sent out a What app. message! Once I asked Siri to play the Eagles, it ended up playing the beatles; trust me I like both the bands but I wanted to hear Eagles and not the Beatles...

I think I've noticed this sound too, it doesn't bother me, but I think it's the default one now.

By Mister Kayne on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 09:12

Brad, default sound for what? which app? which notification? that be the question. Also the other issues listed on the post have you experienced any? especially with automations in the Shortcut app. that have a speak text action? Did you visit the videos on the post link? I was trying to edit a signature on the mail app. It's not allowing me to do it. It says editing but I cannot navigate by word, characters and input anything on it. The keyboard was not showing up!

By Brad on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 09:12

If I get a whether alert, a deliveroo alert, bank, I think you get the point.

Silly question but are you sure you've not muted your phone?

What about a soft reset I think it's called.

I've not used siri shortcuts so can't comment on that.

I can't help anymore than that as the sounds work fine for me.

By Mister Kayne on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 09:12

No the phone is not on mute, notification settings were as set up as earlier. Speaking to apple phone support as I type this. I am afraid I might have to do the reset all settings which will mess up the rotar and VoiceOver setttings and I will have to redo all my notification and custom settings all over again. A painful job, have a good one!

By Brad on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 09:12

These new sounds are very quiet compared to the old ones so you might not be hearing them, the one you're talking about for example is about a second long.

By Mister Kayne on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 09:12

My what app., telegram and teams notifications are customised in the app. yet I don't get the sound notifications. I have not tinkered with the settings for the notifications for those apps. just ensured they are set up as they were.

I am not the only one on the planet complaining on the default notification sound which was tritone earlier; here is what I found on 9TO5 mac The new iOS 17 notification sound is quieter, and there’s no way to change it back
https://9to5mac.com/2023/09/19/ios-17-iphone-app-notification-sound/

By Brad on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 09:12

They are really quiet sounds. They don't bother me because my notifications get read out and if I want to I can swipe through the screen but I can completely see why people wouldn't like them.

Why must apple break things that aren't broken. Perhaps you could put a complaint in to the accesibility apple people and explain that not only are these sounds hard for you to hear but if someone had hearing loss, it would probably be impossible due to the low short sounds.

By Dominic on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 09:12

You can literally change it to the old times of iOS 16, go to settings, sounds,, classic old sounds are there I don’t understand why everyone so annoyed

By Daniel Angus M… on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 09:12

go to settings>accessibility>VoiceOver>verbosity. there is a new setting called system notifications. select speak for lock screen and banner notifications and it will be just like previous versions of iOS.

By Roxann Pollard on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 09:12

Hello Daniel. Just wanted to drop you a note to tell you thank you so much for your post here. Am so glad to be able to get notifications working properly again. Now if Apple would just be quit being stupid, and breaking things like the series sound, and now the default sound, Things would be a little bit easier. Lol again, thank you very much for the info provided.

By Holger Fiallo on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 09:12

There is no banners notification. Just speak, speak count and sound.

By WellF on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 09:12

New sounds work just fine here. They're different, but I like them all.

By Holger Fiallo on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 09:12

Notice that in iOS 17.01 the valume for the sounds are little higher. Specially on the lock screen.

By Mister Kayne on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 09:12

Thank you for your reply, Daniel. Notifications are being spoken on the locked screen but I am not getting the sound alert for them. Like for the What app. I have set notifications to Sounds and Badges. I am not getting the sound alert, by all means with this setting, I will not get the notification on my locked screen which is the way I want it. The setting you speak about is the setting to speak or not to speak the notifications on the locked screen and does not help in my situation. That said, I am working with apple support to get this addressed. Right now my phone is in a mess, an enterprise app. I rely on heavily is not allowing me to sign in and keeps crashing/ closing when I am trying to enter my credentials. The challenge with the sound alert is also not solved. They had asked me to take a backup and restore all settings to default, did not help instead got me into more mess!

By Mister Kayne on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 09:12

Well the complaining is because I am totally blind and rely heavily on the sounds for my alerts and I am used to a particular sound as an alert for an app. I cannot keep resetting the notification sounds each time there is an update. Also the classic sounds are there but I had a reminder sound Rooster which I downloaded from the iTunes store and I cannot set it for reminders from there! The original challenge was that I am not getting any sound alerts for apps. like what app., teams which are critical for my job and that is really disturbing. I hope I am justified in my complain...

By Holger Fiallo on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 09:12

Yes you are! You pay for a phone that suppose to work well and allow you to take advantage of all the functions. Some do not get it. For a phone that most pay over $800 or more it should work. Lucky me with my 13 pro things work well. Yes the notification is very low in regarding sound.

By Mister Kayne on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 09:12

I wish you the very best, thank you for understanding the plight critical alerts are missed in Microsoft Teams and I am delayed in my delivery at work and that hampers my performance. One thing noticed, if you go to notification settings for the app. and select show notifications on locked screen, you start getting the sound alerts but one does not want that! Also on the apple community forum, they mentioned that you cannot use custom tones for reminders, which is really annoying! I am going to escalate this to apple in all possible ways. This is not just an accessibility bug or issue, it's universal but matters a lot if you are totally sight impaired.

By Andy Lane on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 09:12

Just don’t get most notifications with the ping sound. Occasionally one will work but usually not. I don’t know how the thread moved to the new default sound in iOS 17. Thats clearly not your problem. You just aren’t getting alerts for some apps. I haven’t found a way to resolve this problem either. If Apple are able to help you I’d appreciate you updating the thread. BTW as above, I’m also not talking about what VO speaks. It’s the notification that just doesn’t work in the first place.

By Mister Kayne on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 09:12

Totally will keep this thread updated, no sound alerts on any of these apps. What app., Microsoft Teams and Telegram. I have uninstalled the shortcut app. I used it extensively and I miss it now but not for the price of my peace of mind

By Mister Kayne on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 09:12

They say it's a third party app. issue, really? Anyhow, I have also been directed to apple.com/feedback to report or suggest the features that are no longer working thanks to the update. Encourage all on this forum topic to also indulge. Don't mention that you are a voice over user as it's just not voice over users that are facing this challenge!

By Andy Lane on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 09:12

For Mr. Came its 3 3rd party app issues. For me it’s 1 3rd party app issue and 1 1st party. My iMessages are unreliable too. I can have my iPad locked next to me and hear an iMessage notification but my phone doesn’t get that same notification. Not every time but a good percentage of iMessages don’t get alerts on my phone. (Moderator's note: The remainder of this post was removed due to not complying with our posting guidelines.)

By Brad on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 09:12

I got a message a couple days ago and heard the ding sound.

I don't care if there's sounds or not as things are read out to me anyway. Are you completely sure you're not getting the sounds at all? the droplet sound is about a second, perhaps not even that, long, it's so quiet too.

I don't use whats' app or those apps you mention but have you tried changing back to the original sounds if you can?

I know that if you search for how to fix ios sounds not working in ios 17 on youtube you'll get results. Perhaps you could try that.

Have you updated to the latest version of IOS?

By Mister Kayne on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 09:12

No trouble with text message sound alert notifications, I don't use iMessage. It's the apps. you don't use and which I use that are not giving out any sound alert notifications.

Have tried everything under the sun to fix them; no luck!

By Magic Retina on Monday, October 23, 2023 - 09:12

I'm having this problem but having it with iMessage itself. It doesn't seem to matter what I do in settings, whether my phone is on vibrate only or full sounds, I'm not getting any notifications for messages most of the time. Once in a great while I'll hear the ping but it's inconsistent. And the haptics are broken big time, which really sucks since I rely heavily on them. I've played in settings, restarted my phone multiple times, everything I can think of and no dice. This is 14 Pro Max with iOS 17.0.3 and these problems really got bad when I updated to the latest version. So yeah, it's not a third party app problem.

By Holger Fiallo on Monday, October 23, 2023 - 09:12

Is a bug. Saw video in Youtube and people were reporting this issue.

By Viktor on Thursday, November 23, 2023 - 09:12

Yes, I fully support the topic starter, I even wanted to create a separate topic. Thank God I found someone who has the same problems as me. Since I was used to the sound in iOS 16, I didn’t even know or guess that there was such a problem that you couldn’t change the default notification sound at all. which stands on applications on those applications in which you cannot change the sound where the developer did not take care of it. in third-party applications about changing the sound. It’s certainly terrible that in such an expensive phone and in such an advanced system you can’t just change the default notification sound, which is not even a place where you can change it, I’m shocked! I wrote and called Apple support, I hope that people here will also connect and will also inform them about this problem. so that it is still possible to change the notification sound to any desired one, including the old familiar sound from iOS 16

By Mister Kayne on Thursday, November 23, 2023 - 09:12

Alright, I am now getting sound notifications for all those apps I mentioned i.e. Whats app, Teams and Telegram. I think we made enough of noise about it on the forums and by reporting the issue to apple.com/feedback. Thanks for your support, I will have another post up with the new challenges with the mail app

By Mister Kayne on Thursday, November 23, 2023 - 09:12

Application alert sounds have been fixed but you still cannot change the default notification sound, this is not a bug because earlier it was the Tritone sound Alert, and now it's Droplet you couldn't change the default notification sound before or now; so this will be a feature request. Would it not be also nice to have a volume setting for notifications? For now they are controlled by the volume you set for your ringtone I keep mine to 30

By Viktor on Thursday, November 23, 2023 - 09:12

Hello, I fully support you and agree with you! adjusting the volume for individual events and more flexible would, of course, also be great, as well as an increasing bell and everything else related to sound. Of course, it is more noticeable and more important for us than for ordinary sighted people, so we are more sensitive to this. But I hope that it will still be useful if I write and talk a lot, then maybe something will work out. my friends on the Android system were also very surprised and shocked that we couldn’t change the standard notification sound at all. I wouldn’t have believed it until I touched it. Apparently everything was fine before. And I didn’t even pay attention to it. I would still like some more... then basic phone personalization

By Viktor on Thursday, November 23, 2023 - 09:12

Did this really happen! I hope you are as happy as I am. This is what it means, after all, the company listens to users, probably thousands of people wrote to them because sighted people and I complained that they did not hear the new sound. but we can say that a revolution took place because for decades we did not notice that this sound cannot be changed, and then the sound was not the same. In general, it’s a long time to say something. Here’s a link to the news and we’ll wait for the release and hope that it will be like this. I really believed in the company again and in what we need to write and say and complain! and you will be heard

By Ann Marie B on Saturday, November 25, 2023 - 09:12

Hi. I am on the beta of Ios 17.2. Yes this is true you can change the default notification sound under sounds and haptics. Yay! I tinkered with different alerts and settled on tritone. :)

By Mister Kayne on Saturday, November 25, 2023 - 09:12

I am not sure if you realized the change from IOS 17 to IOS 17.1; with IOS 17 for some reason all sound alert notifications for 3rd party apps were not working and the only way to make them work was by going to the notification setting of the app and selecting either show on locked screen or in notifications. The latter was less intrusive.

I am also not particularly happy about not being able to change the default sound alert for the timer; perhaps this new limitation was introduced because of the ability to add multiple timers to the clock app. Which is good, so that you could set different tones for different timer intervals. But by default the new tone isn't that alarming enough to grab my attention. Perhaps it's my opinion and I need to be excused for having it.

I am still irate with a few buggy things on IOS 17.1 but will hold my peace I think I have already written about the issues with the mail app somewhere on this forum. Besides which the new challenges include, Siri voices that were downloaded suddenly are no more downloaded! Automations that have the Speak Text action with a Siri voice selected, are choppy; this too I have written about on this forum.

Perhaps it's just me having a field day with my phone and IOS; because some users were able to relate and others just trolled me and concluded I have a complaining attitude for my experience...

By Dennis Long on Saturday, November 25, 2023 - 09:12

ITS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I AM ROCKING IT ON THE BETA ITS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
