Very fast, responsive and like how it manages. Is making my nice 13 pro that I got last Nov new. Only issue is how low the sound for notification is.

By Magic Retina on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 14:15

It feels more responsive and like scrolling is easier.

I was going to say the focus is better but it's not, alas.

By Dominic on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 14:15

The focus problem seems to have completely vanished on my iPad at sixth generation as soon as I update

I really like the Point and Speak feature. At least, I think that's what it's called? Actually reads things in order, unlike Seeing AI which just sounds like gibberish or won't speak.

I was getting constant voiceover crashes in iOS 16 when I tried to use the Siri voices. The only voice that would work without crashing a lot was Alex. Now it is way snappier and no more crashing. Usually I recommend people wait a few months when a new iOS is out for them to sort out the bugs, but iOS 16 was so bad for voiceover, it's definitely a worth while upgrade. I haven't run into any weird issues yet.

By gailisaiah on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 14:15

I noticed that when invoking Siri with the Side Button, instead of a sound, there's a little haptic. I do like that. Still looking at some of the new stuff. So not sure about that yet.

By WellF on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 14:15

how do you call siri by saying Siri only? It doesn't work for me. Is it language specific?

By Cobbler on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 14:15

If you haven't done so already, you need to set this option in Siri settings.

By WellF on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 14:15

I can't find it on the Siri settings. Is it hidden somewhere?

By Cobbler on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 14:15

Under Siri settings, the first option should be “Listen for”. It's above the “Press Side Button for Siri” toggle. Is this not the case for you?

By WellF on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 14:15

No. I get the old activate hey Siri (I use iOS in Portuguese so I don't know the exact label in English).
Maybe it will come for us later this year.

By Dominic on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 14:15

Go to settings.
Go down to accessibility.
Use heading navigation to go to general at the bottom of the accessibility page.
Double tap on Siri.
You’ll find the option there

By Cobbler on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 14:15

There are indeed several Siri options that can be set under the Accessibility settings. However, The "Listen for" setting that enables Siri to respond to "Siri" or "Hey Siri" is under: Settings > Siri & Search > Listen for

By Dominic on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 14:15

Indeed it is in Siri and such. My iPad and I don’t know why The option to listen for hay siri I don’t have the option to listen Siri

I like the fact that iOS is more snappy on my old iPhone XR than iOS 16 was.
I definitely enjoy to be able to use SIRI voices with VoiceOver again without VO constantly crashing.
I also enjoy that I now can mute/unmute the mic just by pressing on the stem of my AirPods.
Super nice feature.
iOS 17 works very well for me so far.

Everyone was so happy when iOS 17 got released. They would no longer need to deal with iOS 16’s poor implementation of VoiceOver
It was actually the first time I’ve seen multiple people upgrade on the day of lunch. Usually people except for myself wait for the update so hang around for a few weeks or even months or even a year, People are so desperate to cleanse themselves of iOS 16 basically half of the community here updated immediately or not a day or two after

In today’s post, here is my brutal review of iOS 17

Makes my phone like new! I have an SE3. I also updated the same day because of how stable it sounded. In my oppinion this has been the most stable update for me since ios12.

By roman on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 14:15

I really enjoy the new feature where you can create your AI version and I sound fantastic. hope we can clone our own tts.

By Brad on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 14:15

I love this voice. In the UK we have a diverse bunch of accents and people and this voice shows that. I hope more are added in the future and can't wait to see what those may be. Yorkshire? Burmingham? Scouse? Livipull? Who knows :)

By OldBear on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 14:15

I like that it didn't make my phone unusable. The burden of worrying about getting the focus bug is gone for a brief time until Apple releases another update.

By Dominic on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 14:15

I have the same opinion dictation is definitely better

From SIRI's release on the iPhone 4s up until iOS 16, a familiar chime would sound when we pressed the home or side switch. And we were all happy. No one complained.

But for some reason, Apple decided that chime wasn't good enough, and iOS 16 included a new chime sound that had just a slightly longer duration than the original chime. Very quickly, blind users reported new problems with SIRI. SIRI begins to listen only after the chime finishes playing. Because we were brain-trained on the shorter duration, SIRI would miss the first word or part of the first word of our request. It took a lot of getting used to, but eventually we all learned to wait just a fraction of a second longer before speaking to SIRI.

iOS 17 fixes that problem by eliminating the chime altogether and replacing it with a haptic. In my experimentation, I can begin my SIRI request as soon as my reflexes acknowledge the haptic, and SIRI hears the whole request. So, if we disregard the fact that the previous release just trained us all to wait longer before we speak, this is actually a great improvement.

I am so relieved the focus bug is almost fixed. I have also just started using a Bluetooth speaker again like I did over 6 years ago or so. I was about to write voiceover volume has behaved but it just went crazy when the Bluetooth keyboard connected to type this message. Well hopefully that was a one off and I can continue having my Bluetooth speaker playing media and phone playing voiceover without my ears being blown out by that Bluetooth volume bug.

As someone with both post traumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder, the new mental well-being category is really nice. I really like that you can take mental health tests, and get crisis resources if you’re suicidal or distressed.

By Brian Giles on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 14:15

Right there with you! I really like the new health stuff. I've been trying to get into the habbit of logging how I'm feeling in the hope that it will give me some data I can look at over time. Also love that I can do it right from my watch too.

The mental health tests got me really excited when they talked about it at WWDC. Last time I was in therapy I had to do one of those questionaires before every session. That was an accessibility challenge, but during covid they started sending me a link so i could just do it on my phone. It was interesting to see how the numbers changed based on what my therapists could see, although each of them explained it in a different way so I couldn't always get an idea of all the trends that were happening.

I would love to be able to track something like that on my phone. After I upgraded to 17 I found info that talks about what mental health questionaires are and how they can help, but nothing that actually lets you take one.

By Lily Rose on Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 14:15

It's so responsive!
Re battery health mine went down to 96 which is honestly a relief for me because it was on 100 for about a year ever since I got it last year just before ios 16 came out and then it went down after I updated.

For those of you with an SE model iPhone running iOS 7.x, what improvements (if any) have you noticed with the following?
• Home button -- click functionality such as speed, accuracy, etc.
• Touch ID -- any improvements?
• Reachability -- any changes?

Also have you noticed any changes and/or improvements interacting with apps, such as opening/closing, swapping apps within the app switcher, etc?
Regarding the double tap issue that many have reported, how bad is it on SE models, and is the suggested work-around viable?

With Siri, someone mentioned an improvement to speed and performance, but is it universal? In my experience as of iOS 16.x, I have noticed a decrease in performance with Siri when using the "Hey Siri" feature. So, in iOS 17, is that better? Worse? No change?

Thanks in advance. 😃
