Apple Beta Releases

Apple has released RC (release Candidate) versions of all of it's operating systems!
These rc versions are most likely the same as the public versions being released a weak later.
If you wish to have the updates a bit early, go to settings, general, software updates, Beta updates, and select either iOS 17 public beta or iOS 17 developer beta.
Now exit the beta updates section. You should find iOS 17.0.
Hope this helps, and if you find any new changes and or bug fixes, put them here.

Your Feedback is Important to Improving Accessibility on Apple platforms

Don't assume that Apple is aware of a bug or that your report won't make a difference - submitting bug reports directly to the company helps them reproduce and resolve the issue faster. Your report may provide crucial information. The more reports they receive, the higher the priority they give to fixing the bug.

If you're using a beta version, use the Feedback Assistant on your device to submit feedback and bug reports. If you're using a public release, follow the instructions on this page.

Since this is the RC, do I need to have beta off now. Do not want to keep testing any beta. Do I wait for next week? Thanks.

By Levi Gobin on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

Once the RC is installed, repeat the steps above and go to the beta updates section and select off if you no longer wish to receive betas.

Thanks.

By Ramy on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

Hello all:
will it be exactly the same? or do i need to download the public Release next week?
and did applevis make a blog about it's features and it's bugs?

By Tyler on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

Member of the AppleVis Editorial Team

Barring any updates to today's releases, they will be identical to what will be released next week in the case of iOS 17, iPadOS 17, watchOS 10, and tvOS 17, and the following week in the case of macOS Sonoma. AppleVis will have more detailed coverage of these releases' new features and bugs in the coming days.

Do not see what you are reporting. Please more info. Thanks.

The subject says it all. They are very cool, rc has more than twenty sounds and warning tones. In addition, the old ones were overhauled with vibration and small touches.

By Levi Gobin on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

Well, you beat me to it.
All of the classic ringtones, including the fun sound affects like boing duck, and crickets all have there own haptic now. I like a few of them, like the haptic for Alarm, but some of them are a bit sloppy, like the one for the send mail.
Some of my favorite from the older set include suspense, which feels like one long low pitch haptic rising in amplitude, the one for time passing, and a few others.
This is a very interesting time to release new ringtones, because just a decade earlier, apple released new ringtones in iOS 7.
Anyone expecting even more tones in iOS 27? Well, guess we gotta see in 10 years.

By Andy Lane on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

As above, suspense has a fantastic haptic now as does my current text tone. Typewriters. I’m not sure about a lot of the new ringtones though. I wonder how apple made the decisions of what to put in. I mean these are going to be around forever so you know they put a lot of thought and probably money into it. Some of them are very offbeat, some are a little dystopean, some are a bit weird. A few of the haptics really are fantastic though. There’s one where the haptic matches the lower notes of the piano. It’s great but not loud enough to be my ringtone. I think I’d have liked a few more happy and playful tones but maybe they will grow on me. I like about 4 of them but probably not enough to change. Speaking of which, they changed the default. It starts out differently then merges into its old tune at the end. Again interesting. I wonder how they make the decisions they do. I’m surprised they changed reflection because it’s a free advert whenever it goes off in public. Like McDonalds playing that whistle really loud on the radio ads, everyone recognises it. Seems like a strange thing to play around with.

Hi all,

Unfortunately, their's no reverting back. I'm liking the new notification sounds.

By Dawn 👩🏻‍🦯 on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

Wow! There's new ringtones? That's awesome! My question is:
Is there any... I guess old-school ringtones? Or even modern versions of old-school ringtones. What I mean is, an actual old-fashioned ring sound. I don't know how else to put it. It'd be nice if there was because, I've been thinking about purchasing a couple tones, (a text tone that's more old-school/professional, and, a ringtone) I think those types of ringtones are easier to hear especially if you're jamming, or away from your phone. Plus, all 3 of us in my house have cell phones now. Dad took the old-fashioned bell ringer. And so did every one else it seems like. :-) ;-) Plus, there's the added things of, distingishing my phone from my folks, and maybe other people's out in public. Plus, distingishing which notification I'm getting. Because face it, having the tri-tone for EVERY APP is confusing! Plus, I like those old-schinol ringtones as a matter of personal preference. But, in lieu of purchasing ringtones, (because I'm tempted, but, my inner cheap skate screams no) I thought about looking for a way to make ringtones from phone ring sound effects that I find online. A way that doesn't involve a computer which I have no access to, or, GarageBand, because, I've heard the hoffror stories. :-)

By Julian on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

Apple gives and takes away. All of my personally created alert tones are no longer available to be assigned as my Text Tone. They were available all throughout the beta cycle until the RC released today. I'm hoping that this is a bug and will be fixed soon.

By Lee on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

Well subject says it all. A total disgrace that Apple will release an operating system with one of their native apps broken. Shocking.

By Andy Lane on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

Already reported to apple around a month ago. With a Bluetooth keyboard pressing up and down arrow when not in quicknav to move around the note, the only thing VO says is the top line of the note or paragraph.

By Mlth on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

I've been experiencing this since 16.5 I believe, but it seems to be worse in iOS 17. Is anyone experiencing, when one is swiping through items while VoiceOver is already reading content, that sometimes it feels like VoiceOver is repeating speech fragments in the beginning of new content? It was prevalent with Eloquence on iOS 16, but now seems to be present on other voices as well.

By Dennis Long on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

This needs to be reported. I don't like the new notification sounds. We should be able to return to the old sounds.

By Andy Lane on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

This one has been driving me crazy and blowing my ears out for years. I have VO volume very quiet especially when others are around. Putting the phone next to my ear while music is playing on a speaker then having my ears fisted every few seconds is honestly something I think Apple should be taken to court over. It really wasn’t funny. At all.

By Ekaj on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

Subject says it all. As wonderful as my iPhone 7 has been, it looks like I'm due for an upgrade soon. In fact, I'm going to discuss this with my parents in a couple weeks. I assume some of this new stuff will be in Mac OS Sonoma as well. I've heard one of the new ring tones and like it. Forget which one though.

By roman on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

not to look down on anyone, but change is a part of life, so does the updates. I am not referring to the VoiceOver bugs, hope they will fix them soon. I am referring to the ringtones that Apple have installed. I am happy that they have got the new ringtones and haptic feedbacks and looking forward to them next week.

By Holger Fiallo on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

They do not like new things of doing. Face ID, and so on.

By Ann Marie B on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

I took the plunge and enrolled my iPhone 12 in the public beta program. I am excited for all the new enhancements and features. How will this impact the public release next week? Do I need to delete the beta profile and install the public release?
Tia. :)

By Holger Fiallo on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

Unless Apple find a big big bug there will be another RC. However probably not. It will be the public release next week.

By Brooke on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

I won't be updating my phone until I know that bug is fixed, because I have and use loads of text alert tones I made. On my iPad running the RC of iOS 17, I'm not having the issue of Voiceover sort of stuttering over itself. But that's made Eloquence in iOS 16 almost impossible to use.

By Ann Marie B on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

As I've been testing the RC version, the behavior of alert tones doesn't work as expected. I am unable to customize ringtones or alert tones. Ex. I want my email to be reflection but I can't seem to find it within settings. The new ringtones aren't shown in default mail alerts or vm alerts. Hope they fix this soon.

By Holger Fiallo on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

If you have not done so do a reset. They show in my 13 pro. The new tones are OK, nothing to write home about!

By Karok on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

the notification tones are rubbish in my view the new ringtones are better and the classics like tritone etc. still present they are under the classic button from what can tell. hope this helps

By Karok on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

dennis just curious please, what is the new default tone anyway, its name? i just found a classic button after the 8 or so new notifications tones which i find quite dull if I am honest and then tritone etc. are in the classic area which you get to by selecting the "classic" button at the bottom of the notifications sounds window

By wiljames on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

When you tap on the setting you want to change, your custom tones should appear at the top. My purchased ones show up, so I would think your custom-made ones should appear there alongside the purchased tones.

By Andy Lane on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

I’ve been having a look around Dennis, I don’t think it’s possible. Sorry. I’ve spent about half an hour googling too. It looks like the only tones you have control over are the obvious ones. Some apps will have settings in the app but I’m guessing its the general alert tone you want to change back to tree tone which from what I’ve been able to find out, can’t be done.

By Julian on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

According to the Feedback app, there have been 10+ similar reports so they definitely know. We just have to keep being the "squeaky wheel" if we want access to our personally created and/or purchased alert tones.
my report number is: FB13165568 if you want to reference it in your reports.

By Indra on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

On iOS 17 RC, i've tried connected my Braille Display many times to my iPhone 13 Pro Max. It said Braille Display Connected, but there is no single letter appear on my Display from my iPhone. Do you experience this problem too? Is there any solution? Thanks.

By Siobhan on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

First, on the ipHone, my purchased ringtones downloaded fine. My text tone, isn't. That's kinda weird. In the Mac RC release, on this site in particular, when you go by form controls, the subject field then edit fields should be visible to voice over. Unfortunately, it goes to "save". Hoping the last minute things get fixed in a future update.

By tunmi13 on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

As others have pointed out, all the original ringtones and text tones have moved to the Classic category, available at the bottom of the list. I also like the mods they did to Reflection, it's a bit more cool now with the extra notes.
Ringtone setting has worked flawwlessly for me. I have Milkyway as my ringtone and Welcome as my text tone. I asked my Echo Dot to call my phone and it worked with no problems. I have been receiving texts from people and it's been playing Welcome just fine. Perhaps try rebooting your device.

By tunmi13 on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

For those who are dying to hear the ringtones early, assuming you don't have the RC or do not want to upgrade, I've provided a link to a video I made on my channel showing all the new ringtones and text tones.
You can find it here:

By WellF on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

I like all the new ringtones and sound alerts. Yeah, all of them. I don't know if I'm gonna use them all but they all sound interesting to my ears.

By Ann Marie B on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

Hi all. I’m on the RC build of iOS 17. I am unable to set varies ringtones as alerts. I can only set them as ringtones. I think this is a bug and hopefully it is fixed soon. I’ve reported this to feedback app.

By Siobhan on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

The text tones are ok, but I'm still mystified as to why no one else is bothered on here by this. Go to any ring or text tone, tap it. No problem right? Then turn speech off, not voice over, same behavior. turn off voice over completely, you'll see the sounds are a good 20 to 25% louder. Why am i the only one who either noticed this or is bugged by it? It's hard enough when the phone's buried halfway in my purse. No this is not audio ducking, I turn off that the moment i get a phone.

By Andy Lane on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

I’m sure you’ve already tried this but have you tried playing around with the allow volume buttons to control ring volume or whatever it’s labelled as. I have had a bug with the volume of the ringer for literally as long as I can remember, maybe since the start of iPhone. It doesn’t bother me too much because I have the phone in my pocket but if it was in a bag I can see how it would be very annoying. I have a theory that might be worth testing, could it be that if VO volume is at its highest that the ringer volume would also be increased? Nobody would ever have VO volume on full on purpose, I try to turn it down as low as possible to not bother other people so the only time my phone is on high volume is when I’m listening to a book or something in my pocket and doing work around the house. Thats not often so I haven’t tried that little theory out but maybe it’s worth a go? P.S. the allow volume buttons to control ringer alert toggle has had a bug on and off over the years where sometimes it would do what its meant to and others the volume buttons would always control the ringer alert.

By Bingo Little on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

HI Siobhan, I've noticed this too. i mentioned it a while back, I believe, but as nobody joined with me I suppose I just forgot about it. This would have been a couple of years ago now. Never used to happen on the good old iPhone 4 though.

By Siobhan on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

Hi. Thanks, but before going on my rant, I should've mentioned, I'm smart enough to make sure all that stuff is looked into. I.E. I always make sure that setting is turned off. as for voice over on high volume, it only is when an incoming call comes in and it yells for everyone and their Mom to hear. I don't mind that as i answer quick enough. I do mind though, that Apple started screwing with the sounds when everyone bitched about getting loud sounds in notifications during phone calls. I admit, I'd be talking, "I'll meet you in, ow! ten minutes." But it wasn't really to annoying. Bingo, glad I'm not the only one who hates this. I will forever hate audio ducking also, as i said, I turn it off. I wonder if the sounds are being ducked by default? Maybe it's worth looking into having a setting where in you turn off ducking for sounds. Hope this makes sense, coffee is staring at me as it cools and I haven't had much yet.

By Andy Lane on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

Doesn’t hurt to check though especially if it could have fixed your problem. I hope Apple can fix it for you in a future update.

By Siobhan on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

It makes me crazy when people ask, is it accessible, hoping for whatever answer they want instead of, gasp, downloading an app, even paid and testing it out. even the watch sounds could be a bit louder. as if you're in a crowd, unless i strap the watch very tight, I kind of miss some of them, the vibrations on my wrist. Wow, here's another bad thing i just discovered writing this. As you backspace, the letters are double spoken using mac os RC.

By Lee on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

Guys, not sure how long this has been around as I've only just noticed this in the RC which is potentially worrying. If you leave the phone app open and say delete a number from recent calls I've found you can't then call any other number or do anything with any contact. The only way to get the phone back to normal is to close the app so not a total nightmare. It's odd though. If you try to call another recent call say it seems to open it and a delete button appears next to it. But, double tapping it does nothing. As I say only just noticed that and nobody else has commented on it so maybe just me at the mo. iPhone 13pro.

By Travis Roth on Sunday, September 24, 2023 - 07:07

Hello,
There is a new checkbox in the VoiceOver Braille settings called Enable Bluetooth at Start. The goal according to the description is for VoiceOver to enable Bluetooth if it is off so that Braille display will always connect. However in my test there seems to be a permissions problem and VoiceOver is not allowed to communicate with a Braille display until it has been toggled to on at least one time.
Can you try this checkbox and report back? Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver > Braille > Enable Bluetooth at Start. (Or similar name if I am misremembering the exact wording, I dont' have the beta device here at the moment.)
