Not much as changed since 2012. This is really sloppy from the devs.

I wrote to ITVX earlier and here's their response:

Hi

Thank you for your email. We are aware of these issues and we are addressing them - we do apologise for the experience as it is at the moment, but we do hope to improve it in the near future.

Simply not acceptable.

Hi,
Not sure which ITVX app you are using, I've been using it on my iPad with Voiceover for a very long time, sure, the accessibility has not been brilliant years ago, but now this app is pretty usable with Voiceover, and has been for a few years now.

I realise the opening post was referring to the iOS and OS versions but I thought the Apple TV app was worth mentioning here. I haven't used the aforementioned apps but I can tell you the Apple TV app is a mess and one which ITVX has acknowledged is an issue. I'm only noticing it now because of the women's World Cup otherwise I don't care for terrestrial tv.

I'm having a similar problem with my internet broadband provider's email app where the main body of the message can't be read by VO and again has been acknowledged by the company. It really is poor not to make these apps accessible from the start.

To be fair, I've been using the Apple TV app more over the last few months as they've finally introduced the audio described section that we had on the iPhone and iPad apps.
Again, I find it fairly usable, not the best on the player screen, but I can easily browse through shows on the Apple TV just like I can on the iPhone and iPad.

Sure, you can navigate the app but VO doesn't read everything and the interface is not the most user friendly. BBC iPlayer on the otherhand is a breeze compared with ITVX.

Yes, ITVX takes some getting used to, certainly not as good as BBC iPlayer, or even Channel 4, but it's much better than it was a good few years ago where it was pretty much unusable.

By DJ on Friday, August 25, 2023 - 07:18

I accept ITVX is useable albeit frustratingly. However, it shouldn't take years to implement the necessary changes.

Just received another response a few minutes ago:

Thank you - I will pass this on and your email will be used to add pressure to find a solution sooner rather than later.
All the best
Andy

Instead of accepting the status quo, people should send a message to ITVX letting them know it's simply not acceptable to disregard screen reader users. If BBC iPlayer and C4 can make their apps fully compatible with iOS and Android then ITVX have no excuse bearing in mind it's been years during which time they've done diddley squat.

If anyone has anything further to add in response to David Padmore's comments, please don't hesitate to get in touch with ITV.

I'm the Director of Accessibility at ITV. Andy has passed on your email chain about the screen reader integration on the ITVX mobile apps. I'm sorry to hear about your frustrations but I would like to assure you that we do recognise where the apps fall short and we do have work in progress to address these shortcomings. Since last year, there has been an enormous amount of work undertaken to move from the old ITV Hub to ITVX and, within that time, we have extended the availability of audio description from the mobile apps to Amazon Fire sticks, Apple TV devices, Google Chromecasts, Samsung TVs, Sky Glass, Virgin Media boxes and Freesat boxes. We are in the process now of ensuring that there is an AD category on each of these platforms so that people can find content with AD more easily. And we are also working through the user experience and screen reader integrations so that the issues you raise like button labelling and the consistency of the experience throughout the app are improved.

I realise this must feel slow to you, and we are in an in-between phase where AD content is available but the user experience is not supporting the discovery and enjoyment of that content sufficiently well. But we are committed to keep on this until the issues are resolved and you have an all-round good experience whichever device you are using.

I'll make sure the ITVX developer team sees your complaint as well. If we or they have any further questions we may come back to you. In the meantime, please do contact me if you have any further questions.
All the best
