Problems entering text with a braille display

Hi everyone. I have a HumanWare Brailliant BI40X. When I got it, I was shown how to use it with an iPhone, including entering text. I exchanged text messages with my trainer. I know it worked, last October.

Since then, I've primarily been using the display to read NLS books. In other words, I've been using it as a standalone device, not with my iPhone. But now I want to get up to speed on using it with my iPhone. AppleVis and the Apple documentation have been great, except for one problem.

I can't seem to enter text in a text field. For example, I open the Messages app, select a conversation, and navigate to the text field. I select that text field (either with one of the cursor routing keys, or with Space+dots 3 and 6. But when I start typing, the characters appear for a moment, then vanish. If I type a word quickly, it vanishes immediately after I hit the spacebar. After I've typed my entire message, there's nothing but spaces, and I verified this by hitting backspace - all I hear is "space, space, space" for each character I delete.

I did a cursory search of AppleVis for a problem like this, but came up empty. Anyone know what I might be doing wrong? I figure it has to be something obvious, because, as I said, I know this worked months ago when I first got the display.

Thanks for any help.

The Braille characters I enter show up just fine on the Braille display for a few seconds, then vanish. Or they vanish as soon as I complete a word and hit the spacebar. Either way, the text field on the iPhone is empty except for spaces.

I've got my blind tech trainer trying to figure this out, and he's stumped too. Next week I'll be at the Colorado Center for the Blind, maybe someone there can help.

I know this issue, switch to another Braille English Table.

I switched the table to English, Unified, System, and it works fine now. Thanks for that tip.

Documentation for these tables appears to be non-existent. As someone who's relatively new to Braille displays, I have no idea what the tables are, or why I would want one instead of the other. But it seems like they should all allow input, shouldn't they?

I've also noticed this behaviour with trying to use braille screen input - a new venture for me. Switched braille tables from Liblouis North American Computer Braille Code to English US System; problem seems to have resolved, but still have to test the braille screen input.
Is this perhaps a problem about braille tables (system) vs. braille tables (Liblouis)?
I'm using an iPhone 7 with iOS 15.7.6. I wanted to get some experience with braille in other languages, and it seems that there aren't "system" braille tables for some languages.

even though your problem is fixed, it may be worth letting both Apple and Humanware know about your issue.

Hi Paul et al. I just got my HumanWare eReader, but cannot seem to log into BARD to save my life. I can log into NFB Newsline just fine and do my thing. The documentation says that log-in credentials for BARD have to be entered using UEB. I *think* I'm using UEB but I'm not sure. I've looked all over but can't find anywhere something that outlines the differences between UEB and the Braille code on which I was trained all those years ago. Hadley is great but they don't seem to have something quite like this. Advice anyone?

Hi. I have found it helpful to enter credentials in Grade 1 (uncontracted) Braille. Do you have any special characters in your email or password? The differences in UEB shouldn't significantly affect your email or password entry. I do find grade 1 is helpful, though.

Hi everybody. I've been slowly but surely getting acquainted with my HumanWare eReader, and like it thus far. Regarding learning UEB, the Braille Authority of North America seems to have a lot of info on this subject. I for one am going to read up on it. But in the meantime, I've had some time to kill today so I did some more with the eReader connected to USB on my Mac. I attempted to connect the unit to blue-tooth on my phone, and am wondering if somehow these blue-tooth connections only last for a few minutes before vanishing into thin air. I'm going to investigate this. My blue-tooth headset works well and the connection hasn't timed out on there. But BANA's website is https://www.brailleauthority.org , for anyone interested.

For those struggling to log in, at least with the Humanware model, there is an option to import a configuration file. What this involves is creating a text file with your user name and password. You can then save the file on the eReader and use that option. I don't recall the exact file name, but it is listed in the User Guide that comes with the display.
