How to insert emojis easily with VoiceOver on Mac?

Hello there,

There are many posts that discuss various aspects of emojis on this forum, but I can't find any posts that explain or discuss how to easily insert emojis in a text using VoiceOver on a Mac. That's why I'm writing this post here.

Emojis play an important role in digital communication by adding context to text messages and helping to distinguish tone or mood. They have become an essential part of social media communication and have changed how we communicate online, making it more efficient and casual. Emojis are also used to represent feelings and can control the emotional feelings of the people being texted or talked to online. They provide contextual information that facilitates processing and understanding of verbal messages as well as social information about others’ emotional state and personality traits. Emojis make online communication richer and more emotive, acting as substitutes for gestures, tone of voice, and facial expressions.

I am using the Character Pallet (Cmd-Ctrl-Space) to insert emojis in a text. However, I don't find the utility easy to use. No automatic announcements are being voiced whilst searching for an emoji character using the search box provided. One has to peruse the list manually to access the desired character. Am I missing something? Alternatively, are there some third party utilities that do the job better? How do you succeed on entering emoji symbols into your text?

I would appreciate any tips or suggestions from fellow Mac users who use emojis frequently in their digital communication. Thank you very much in advance😀.

One thing you could try is to create text replacements for frequently used emojis, so when you type a series of characters, it will be substituted by the specified emoji. These can be configured in System Settings > Keyboard > Text replacements.

• Command-control spacebar.
• Start typing. e.g. "happy" or "call me"
• Interact.
• Move to the grid and interact again.
• VO left and right arrow until you hear the desired character.
• VO space. The character is inserted at the insertion point.

Under System Preferences/Settings, (Monterey or newer I believe) go to Keyboard, then while on the first tab labelled "Keyboard" is a setting labelled as "Press FN key to..." and beside this is a drop down menu with a few options, one of them is 'opens emoji and symbols'.

Lots of good tips above. I am someone who utilizes emoji's now and then.... 😇
For me it's just a matter of practice. I do the traditional Control + Command + Spacebar. and I just arrow around, usually in the 'Smilies..' category. One nice thing is that after some time, you start to build a list under 'Frequently used'. Makes things a little convenient.
