Apple Releases iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16.1; Bringing Many Fixes for VoiceOver Users

By AppleVis, 24 October, 2022

Member of the AppleVis Editorial Team

Apple has today released iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16.1 to the public. Our testing suggests that these releases resolve a number of the issues introduced for blind and low vision users with the initial release of iOS 16.

Our experience is that the following accessibility bugs have been resolved or significantly addressed in iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16.1:

At the time of writing, we are aware of the following new bug:

When navigating a list of emails in a folder in the Mail app and previews are enabled, VoiceOver will on occasions speak the wrong preview. For example, you place VoiceOver focus on an email received from Bert. Instead of VoiceOver speaking the body of that email as the preview, it might instead speak the body of an email received from Ernie.

There appears to be no pattern to predict when this behavior will present itself or which email body will wrongly be spoken. In our experience, it's not been unusual for VoiceOver to speak the body of an email which isn't even in the same folder. For instance, speaking the body of an email that has previously been deleted. It's also been common for this behavior to be present on multiple emails at the same time.

When you double -tap on the email, the correct and expected email body is displayed and spoken by VoiceOver.

One change of note, is that Apple has made the shutdown chime available on all iPhone models, not just the iPhone 14 as was the case when this feature was first introduced. Note that the startup chime remains limited to the iPhone 14 models, as only these are capable of supporting this chime due to it needing to be hardcoded in to the iPhone's boot software.

As we always stress, we can make no claims on the completeness or accuracy of our testing. We are only a small team, and it is simply impossible for us to test all devices, configurations, applications, and use cases. Accordingly, to help us ensure that the information on this page is as complete and accurate as possible, please let us know in the comments of any additional fixes; enhancements; or regressions that you find in your own use of iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16.1.

I have checked my settings and my notifications are set for list, and I have read at least one other post about the notifications bug where the person said the same thing.

By Lily Rose on Thursday, November 24, 2022 - 09:06

Count stack and list what's the difference from the perspective of a vo user? Thanks!

By Holger Fiallo on Thursday, November 24, 2022 - 09:06

Bugs, yes. Did select list. Did so in iOS 16. and make sure is the sane in iOS 16.1. Bug. Nice try. Can you say bug? Any other suggestion!!! Thanks. Keep warm is cold in Chicago.

I've been having so many issues with Voiceover not responding in the email app for no known reason. It just won't work and I have to turn it off and back on to read my emails. This happens multiple times a day.

Currently having a weird keyboard bug (I thought it was just BSI but it's all keyboards) where the keys and text I'm typing are being spoken in a different language. I can't find any settings in Accessibility to fix this and restarting my phone didn't help. It hasn't done this before but it's been doing it sincce this morning.

By Bruce Harrell on Thursday, November 24, 2022 - 09:06

Try turning off the auto switch language feature. I was having problems too until I turned it off.

By Magic Retina on Thursday, November 24, 2022 - 09:06

Do you mean the detect languages feature? If so, that hasn't fixed it but thanks for the suggestion.

Edit: I deleted my Spanish keyboard and that fixed it. Apparently this is a big problem for sighted users too. Didn't expect it to get into Voiceover that badly.

Voice Memos app, go in, make a new recording of some sorts, then go to the title field with a braille display. For me this is another place the enter key works just fine to close the textfield and save it.

Not purely a VoiceOver accessibility improvement but accessibility to quickly locating information. In iOS 16.1, Apple has restored the adjuster/picker in the Apple Music Search screen. After entering a keyword such as the name of an artist, user can flick up/down to filter results by categories such as artist, playlist, album, song, etc. This cuts down on the amount of swiping through the massive list of search results.
Nice job Apple.

Hi, I have the 13 Pro Max and can someone tell me how I can get Live Activities working as it's turned on in settings. From what I have gathered, Live Activities give you realtime updates of sport scores which sit on your lock screen and the Fotmob app is one of those apps which supports the live activities feature but I'm still getting standard notifications instead of a match live update sitting on my screen. Another app which supports the live activities feature is Uber and I'm not seeing this live banner sitting on my Lock Screen. I'm beginning to think that my phone isn't supported which might be the case.

I opened my Music app for the first time since upgrading, and wow, was I in for a surprise. Did anyone else find that a significant part of their music library was missing? I even checked my iPhone storage usage. Seems like I used to have about 35GB of music, but now I have less than half that, about 16GB. Did anyone else run into this, or anything like it?

There seems to be no rhyme or reason to what was removed, Some of my ripped vinyl is there, some isn't. Some of my ripped CDs are there, some aren't. Some of my iTunes store purchases are there, many are just plain gone.

I guess my next step is to sync with my Music library on my Mac. I just hope the same content didn't disappear after the Ventura upgrade.

By Shawn T on Thursday, November 24, 2022 - 09:06

Paul, I haven't seen the issue you describe. That is rather strange.

By ming on Thursday, November 24, 2022 - 09:06

hey still can not send voice message in IMessage.
I mean can not find the voice message button...

By PaulMartz on Thursday, November 24, 2022 - 09:06

I tracked down the source of this problem. It had nothing to do with the 16.1 upgrade. I had stored my Music library on a local cloud NAS drive, which seems to have become flaky. The last backup was incomplete. Fortunately, I found a full backup from earlier this year, restored it onto my Mac, synced my iPhone, and now all my music is back. Yay!

By KE8UPE on Thursday, November 24, 2022 - 09:06

Hi,
I just restarted my student subscription to Apple music & Wow! The music app has really chaged in iOS16. My "friends list" is gone & the name of a song along with artist info is quite difficult to find.
You now have to swipe until you get above the lyrics of the song.
Does anyone know an easier way to find these items?
If its helpful, I'm using an iphone 13 pro max running ios 16.1.

By Brian Giles on Thursday, November 24, 2022 - 09:06

Music app working fine here, aside from the fact that I can no longer find the icon when a song is playing in spatial audio. It used to be right above the play button in the now playing screen. Thank goodness they fixed that bug where VO was seeing the content of whatever screen you came from when you pulled up the now playing screen. That was annoying!

There's been a bug for a while before 16 where your "my account" button doesn't always show up in the top right corner in the music app. It'll come back if you close the music app and reopen it.

I always keep lyrics hidden unless I specifically want to read them. Most of the time they get in the way, and more annoyingly, I don't like VO trying to read them when they're timesynced with the music playing.

By Wenwei on Thursday, November 24, 2022 - 09:06

My panning buttons don't respond twice, but I came across another strange issue. I have noticed that I get stuck at the top of the page in Kindle app. I should be able to reverse pan and flip the page back to read the bottom of the previous page (I have automatically turn pages on). This doesn't occur frequently enough that it hinders my reading, but it occurs enough that I've started to look for when this actually happens. So far I haven't been able to identify a cause. Swiping right with three fingers to go back a page "unfreezes" reverse panning.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Apologize if this issue has been discussed in another thread.

By Lily Rose on Thursday, November 24, 2022 - 09:06

Probably Kindle's problem if it only occurs in the Kindle app. I have noticed now that for a long time VO crashes when using braille display panning to flip a page back in Apple Books. I also have used the recents tab in phone and haven't encountered focus jumping. Only the focus jumping that's existed since ios 13, which has now existed so long it would be quite unsettling indeed to never have it again. Strange but true.

By Lily Rose on Thursday, November 24, 2022 - 09:06

You know what I said about WhatsApp and Voice Memos? Well, it turns out the behavior of the cut-and-paste commands and the enter key bringing up that menu, is only inconsistent, not totally broken. i found this out when this morning I pressed the enter key expecting the edit commands to come up but send the message instead.

By Magic Retina on Thursday, November 24, 2022 - 09:06

I'm not sure if this is an iOS update bug or not, it started just the other day. If I am playing anything through a device like Alexa, Voiceover will periodically just blast out my phone speaker louder than the volume can even normally go without warning. I have no idea what triggers this. There will be a second or two of whatever I'm reading with VO blaring on my phone (while the speaker is playing normally) then it stops and then it will randomly do it again. This only happens when I'm playing a podcast or music through Alexa. I'm frankly afraid to wear any bluetooth headphones right now with this issue going, it's a genuine safety hazard.

Edit: This bug is not just limited to the bluetooth speakers! I was holding down one finger to open a link and got blasted with noise again. Is all of 16 just really buggy on 13 Pro Max, am I just this unlucky? What is going on Apple?!

By kool_turk on Thursday, November 24, 2022 - 09:06

A work around for the blutooth bug is to change it to any of the other options apart from speaker.

I hate that bug too, but I like voiceover to go through the phone, rather than the speaker, so I put up with it.

By Lily Rose on Thursday, November 24, 2022 - 09:06

I haven't seen this with Beats Solo 3 headphones. Apparently my bluetooth settings are in a place that won't encounter this bug. I really don't understand the workaround you gave, so, man I'm not changing any of my bluetooth settings!

By Magic Retina on Thursday, November 24, 2022 - 09:06

Thanks for the tips everyone! I switched my bluetooth device types for the Alexas and it's stopped my phone screaming at me but alas now Voiceover only talks through the speakers when they're on and not my phone.

By kool_turk on Thursday, November 24, 2022 - 09:06

That's because the Beats headphones use the same chip they use in the airpods, and I did say that the drawback was you'd get voiceover through the bluetooth speaker.

I find the bug annoying as well, especially when the household is asleep, so I mute speech when I think it's going to yell at me.

By Lily Rose on Thursday, November 24, 2022 - 09:06

Thank you Kool_Turg for telling me that. I'm glad to know I don't have to be worried. For all you out there, I'm glad you've figured out a way to fix it!
